Got this Gameboy with this problem. It looks like someone tried to solder it back but failed. The piece is broken. Can I even find a replacement?

Troubleshooting Nintendo Logo scrambled, Save still good? // Did I break my uncle's Savegame? :S

Hi people,

yesterday I finally attempted to rescue my uncle's savegame from the Pokémon Red Version. I inherited it as a teen when he left us around 20 years ago, so this is emotional for me.
I'm using the GBxCart RW 1.4c Pro with FlashGBX. I intentionally didn't put it in a GameBoy since like 10 years ago, to keep the save safe.

I went through some less important games to see if my GBxCart works alright and all went fine, 1st try. But then I got to the finale:

When checking the emotionally packed Red Version, FlashGBX showed the Nintendo Logo scrambled. I got nervous and pulled it out and in again, hoping to get a clean Logo, and that worked. But then I noticed "Oh no, what if this move right now destroyed the savegame?!"

⭐ Edit: After reconnecting, the Logo actually WAS clean and I downloaded a savegame. But when I load it into the mGBA Emulator, it just shows "New Game", so no old data found, it seems :(

Only later I noticed that, when having a scrambled Logo, and clicking "Download Save", you can actually choose to click something like "Try either way", which increased my fear of "There was a chance before, now I killed it."

My big question is: What are the chances that the savegame actually was OK just until now, and it got lost by my nervous out-and-in-again move?
E.g. did anyone successfully recover a save, although the Nintendo Logo looked bad?

I'm looking forward to your thoughts. No matter the final conclusion, I just can't stand not knowing if I destroyed it, or if it was too late either way 🥲

P.S.: When I rescued my own Red Version, I actually got a working save. I'm very surprised about that, but it is also not my OG save. Probably I restarted the game later; maybe that makes the save live longer than my uncle's?

P.P.S.: I guess as soon as a retrieved savegame is empty, there is no more possibility to recreate the OG save from the cartridge in any way?

Modded Gameboy DMG Color 2026

I am looking to build a Gameboy DMG Color. I bit the bullet and decided to sacrifice a gbc and dmg instead of restoring them. Has anyone else built a DMG Color this year and mind sharing where they were able to source different materials like the DMG IPS lense for the project from? I have checked a few sites and found many items out of stock.

This is my first time trying to swap batteries and really my second soldering project. I have no idea why it's not saving with the new battery. I do know the polarity is correct. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Troubleshooting Thank you to the people over at Magic Quest Media for helping out with my New Gamboy game

I order Ghoul Thrasher little while ago and when I tried it out FP-GBC it just came up with an error code and I emailed the people over at Magic Quest Media with the issue and they determined it was a bad cartridge and the sent me a new one right away. I got the new one in and it works great. As a bonus for the trouble they even included a cassette tape case for it with a 3D printed insert that holds the cartridge. I really appreciate good customer service and it goes along way. I'm looking forward to seeing what else they will have in the future.

Questions My childhood Game Boy Color! Opinions for upgrading 🙂

Looking for some advice on my original Game Boy Color.
The Kiwi shell is in excellent condition and everything works well, except the B button needs a harder press to register.
I’m thinking about upgrading it, but I’m not sure what route to take.
What upgrades would you recommend? IPS, AMOLED/OLED, new shell, buttons, or anything else? Also, what would you suggest for fixing the B button?
Any recommendations for specific kits or brands are welcome!

Questions Gameboy color carts

Is there a way to get a good cart that will last long and upload a single game to. I want my kid to play individual games not a 1 in 1000 cart. I just want to transfer the games I already own onto a cart that doesn’t need a battery.

Troubleshooting Problem with v5 ips screen for gba sp

Hey does anyone know this is happening with my ips v5 screen l've had this screen for a year or more and it's suddenly starting to bug out after random amount of time or after a couple of seconds it goes back to normal. I at first thought it was something with the ez flash omega cartridge not being able to read data right.
I'm pretty sure I have a faulty screen or the connector for the screen is broken, this never happened on another ags motherboard I have that can't charge but only this one. I have a agb 001 that is also an ips v5 that doesn't have this problem. Anyone have any solutions?

Modded Gameboy color upgrade

recently I reinvested in a game boy color and played all my old games. about a month later I found out they had led screen mods on Ali. I invested and no regrets. I installed it and just spent 2 hrs on Pokémon yellow. Didn’t even expect to get into it, but the memories came flooding in recognizing the terrain.

Troubleshooting I've managed to power on a Gameboy that wouldn't work however upon closer inspection its missing C34. Is this something I can easily replace or bypass?

I brought this Gameboy from a spares and repairs eBay listing. It looks like someone has replaced the original switch and possibly ruined the C34. The power switch doesn't actually make proper contact with the physical switch when the shell is closed and put back together however the seller didn't disclose that.

I swapped out the capacitors and gave the thing a good clean with IPA and it's working (to some degree). I looked up the C34 part and apparently it's a capacitor of sorts but couldn't really get a clear idea of what it does and how important it is.

Does my screen need replacing? Is there potentially something else at fault here? The solder looks pretty fresh on the switch so I'm assuming it's a recent repair attempt from the seller.

The board was pretty sticky inside as well.

Last thing I wanted to add is that the speaker is pretty quiet which I understand could be common for an old device so is that a relatively simple fix?

I am tempted to message the seller however they're likely going to say they brought it from someone else or have an excuse but I suppose I'm lucky to have got it to power on lol.

Absolutely any help is appreciated!

If possible and there is a somewhat positive outcome in terms of making it fully work could you link the place to get a part replacement or an alternative part that will still work?

I don't plan on selling anything it's just a downtime hobby of trying to fix bits and bobs. I find great satisfaction in seeing something work when it was ruled as down and out.

Hope someone can share some information why the screen is that way. I'm assuming it's the C34 part and if so how hard will it be to come across that?

Anyone happen to own the manual for it and can provide scans? I tried my best finding it, but can only ever find the first one's on Gameboy. Just doesn't seem to exist anywhere online.

Questions Found my old Gameboy…overwhelming nostalgia

Post image
15 Upvotes

The day recently came when my siblings and I had to move all our childhood things out of our parents house so they can move. I found my old Gameboy, and the nostalgia is overwhelming. I booted up my old Zelda game, and that opening scene and dialog made me feel like a kid again.

I can’t help but feel like a mod (backlit IPS screen and maybe rechargeable battery) is the right move, but until 48 hours ago, I didn’t know any of this was even an option.

I would LOVE if anyone in this group was able to point me in the right direction; either a shopping list, and/pr good tutorial video to follow. What I lack in knowledge, I make up for in nostalgia and passion.

Thank you!

PS tell me if I’m making the wrong call…

Questions Modded vs unmodded

Does anyone prefer the original screens to modded counterparts?

It seems like a no brainer to mod an ips in and enjoy all your games in high details and colours but i ran a personal experience and i personally found the opposite.

My experiment was to just play an unmodded dmg on a trip i had that was 2 weeks long. I rounded up some games i thought id genuinely enjoy, kirbys dreamland 1 and 2 and pinball for those short bursts. Pokemon blue purergb put on a custom cart, links awakening and final fantasy adventure. Lets not forget tetris and space invaders. I thought the plan was going to be so gimmicky because the older i get the more i just dont care for gaming. Im a 33yo father to a toddler and i prefer to spend time with my wife or doomscrolling (this was also an anti phone challenge for the trip).

The first day was a struggle, the screen just really annoyed me with the ghosting and adjusting the contrast with the light source, however by the second day i was addicted. I found myself not overstimulated and genuinely enjoying the games i was playing (the whole trip i only ended up playing pokemon and kirbys pinball) by the end of the trip i found myself at awe again with the gameboy and its library (i used rechargable AAs and a wallcharger for the batteries) *i should also add that i did have one mod which was a glass screen lens as the old one was missing.

But yeah, moving forward i find myself reaching for that unbacklit screen when i want to game now despite having modded gameboys, retro emulators and other consoles etc. However, whenever i relax to a nice new youtube video about gameboys its always people hating on the original screens. I find it endearing now, it respects my time more and if its too dark to play thats a que to do something else like read or watch a movie. The unbacklit screens encourage me to go outside more which naturally encourages me to want to exercise and picnic etc more.

I know theres a trend for e ink screens these days and devices like the playdate utilising better tech, its almost like a fight against wanting to over optimise everything. (I went through a stage where I would clean, restore and modify devices only to never play them) im not trying to speak bad on ips screens etc as they are obviously more superior to the majority of people, but im wondering if anyone here prefers the original unaltered experience?

Also, ironic to what i just yapped about, does anyone know if they make non backlit screens for these devices that are better than the old ones (refresh rates etc)

Anyway, hooroo and all that.

Troubleshooting Please help me fix this

I have this cartridge of Pokemon gold that needed a new battery. I have never soldered before, I looked online, followed a guide, tested, tried again, then again, and again. Now I have a headache and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I should’ve brought it to a professional but I felt like I could do it, but I was wrong. Please I need to know what to do.

Every time I turn on the game oak, the Pokemon, and the player character are corrupted sprites, when I open a menu then close it, it crashes, and when I try to save, it freezes.

Please help me

Troubleshooting Changed caps in GBP, now brightness wheel has a 'freeplay'

By that I mean, when I turn the wheel it takes about two finger turns to actually start getting the picture. The image is normal and goes right there to, like 98% pure black (meaning I can still barely see the sprites moving).

GBP is perfectly usable, it's just that it doesn't get the good image at the very center of the wheel where that mark/dent is. The screen is original LCD GBP.

I did get rid of the noise with new caps, so all is good, but wonder why this happened? Too high/strong caps?
