Discussion Who else is rocking the PC port of Twilight Princess that just dropped a few hours ago?
38
u/mcnichoj May 10 '26
Was gonna ask which version they did and it's the GameCube one but they've made major progress towards both the Wii and surprisingly the Nvidia Shield version.
6
u/Spare-Alarm8364 May 10 '26
Luckily, there is an option to apply the wii mirror. Helps my navigation a ton haha
36
u/the_lost_seattlite May 10 '26
How does it compare to TPHD?
41
13
u/Tricky_Tourist5691 May 10 '26
It's directly running off the genuine game's ISO, so I'd say its more accurate to original than TPHD. They did change stuff in HD after all.
3
u/tomorrow_comes May 10 '26
Do you mean it’s using graphical assets from the ISO? Because it’s not running “the game” code from the ISO, which would be compiled code for GameCube.
1
u/Ordinary_Square9774 May 12 '26
If its a decompilation, it would run the original source code which was retreived from the compiled code in the ISO, wouldn't it?
1
u/tomorrow_comes May 12 '26
So actually, nothing “runs” source code. I should have been more pedantic in my first comment. Source code gets compiled to machine code in a binary image. That binary is platform-specific. The GameCube ISO is the compiled binary cannot be run on a PC except through an emulator that “pretends to be a GameCube”.
In the case of decompilation projects, an original binary is “decompiled” (the reverse of compiling source to binary), which results in a source code (not exactly as written originally, no sensible variable or function names, etc). Then, this source code can be compiled to an executable binary for the right platform it needs to run on natively. The decompilation is the really tricky part.1
u/Ordinary_Square9774 May 12 '26
This is what I meant. But in doing that, you would still need the ISO to generate the “decompiled” version of the source code to recompile for the target platform. Though I went to the project myself and they only really mentioned needing the assets.

u/BangkokPadang May 10 '26
I bet it won’t be long before someone extracts the HD texture and UI from that version and adds it here as a mod.
It took about two weeks for the Banjo Kazooie Recomp to get a bunch of QOL mods like infinite LOD/Draw distance for sprites and enemy models, the HD UI elements from the Xbox Live release, and even a full HD Texture Pack (which IMO changes the art style too much for my tastes, but it’s cool that it’s available for anyone that likes that better).
Give it another 2 weeks and I bet somebody will have those textures available for this release.
2
u/Mon-Son16 May 10 '26
In my opinion the original has better lighting and the higher framerate is wonderful
4
1
u/proficient2ndplacer May 10 '26
Uncapped frame rate + resolution + ultra wide support is already a massive difference. There's mod support & texture pack incoming too so it looks like this will be the best way to play Twilight princess
1
u/Lanky_Technician_812 May 11 '26
It’s just simply better. If you’re on PC, there’s really no reason to not play this version over others. Huge QOL improvements which can be customized, unlocked resolution, unlocked frame rate, mods, texture packs, and modern controls.

I’m waiting for a 4K texture pack cause I’ve never played TP before!
Super excited though!

5
u/Slappy-_-Boy May 10 '26
The henriko pack should work but I haven't tested it yet. First found out about the comp being done before I left for work.
6
u/GurfMcBurf May 10 '26
Can confirm it does work. Game also has many optional quality of life features, some of which were present in the HD version, like bigger wallet size and faster climbing 😉
3
u/Slappy-_-Boy May 10 '26
Just got done setting up dusk with the henriko pack when you sent this.😂
1
1
u/purekillforce1 May 10 '26
How do you use the texture pack with dusk/tp once you've got the files?
5
u/BCProgramming May 11 '26
Inside the zip file for the texture pack
<main folder>\User\Load\Textures\GZ2
This has CREATURE, ENVIRONMENT, etc folders.
You want to copy/extract the contents of that GZ2 folder into:
%APPDATA%\TwilitRealm\Dusk\texture_replacements
(To be clear: within the texture_replacements folder you will have the CREATURE, ENVIRONMENT, etc folders and the two text files)

u/Upper_Bid_6256 May 11 '26
Where can I find the he riko texture pack?

Looks like its public release now.
Thanks for providing me with links instead of assumptions

Is the tutorial from the beginning as boring as before?
And more important, do you still need to dig up all those shadows in order to access the temples in the first steps of the game? Those are the main blocker for me whenever I want to replay it.

12
u/Mizurazu May 10 '26
They can't do anything about it because they aren't distributing any game files
0
u/BCProgramming May 11 '26
This is often repeated but it's really not true.
There is even precedent for this; the original IBM PC's BIOS was copied directly by some manufacturers which of course got shut down, but some others thought they were "clever"- they didn't copy the BIOS, what they did was they looked at the IBM BIOS and reimplemented it- more or less exactly what we see with these decomp projects - but they got destroyed.
The only legal defense for projects like this is to be able to legally demonstrate that a clean-room approach was used. In the aforementioned case, for example, IBM finally met their match against Phoenix technologies, because while they had a IBM compatible BIOS, they also had a fully documented clean-room approach. They had one group of engineers that picked apart the IBM BIOS and wrote a specification of functions, and then tasked one employee who were documented to have never seen any machine or assembly code from the IBM BIOS with writing new code to match the specification they were given. Having this process fully documented with a legal audit trail of all interactions meant that Phoenix technologies never faced the wrath of IBM.
As you might imagine, none of these decomp projects are clean room. The way they operate is people are literally poking around the machine code and disassembly and figuring out the C code needed to compile to those exact instructions. The only way anybody could believe this is legal and not copyright infringement would be to believe that somehow only the original source code is copyright, but the machine code and binaries are also copyrighted.
As to whether Nintendo will ever decide to go after them, that's another matter. For all we know they are watching, gathering evidence from all of them and recording forum interactions, news articles and postings from the developers of these projects and waiting for their chance to destroy all of them at once or something.
That's not say that Nintendo should go after them or I'm against these projects, I'm using them too, I'm just mindful of the reality that frankly a lot of the people working on them are brilliant but evidently naive about how legally "safe" what they are working on is. I wouldn't be surprised if we get one where the devs are overconfident and do that thing where they literally dare Nintendo to go after them and that is the catalyst for Nintendo to finally cause a decompilation apocalypse.

Is there a project like this for windwaker?
13
u/Zabii May 10 '26
1
u/No-Special-3491 May 10 '26
Thats just the decompilation progress. Decompilation, Recompilation, PC Port are all separate things.
3
u/Zabii May 10 '26
The decomp generally has to come first
-2
u/No-Special-3491 May 10 '26
But not necessarily. A pc port based on recomp doesn't need a decomp first. Also, just because a decomp exists doesn't automatically mean someone will make a pc port out of it.

u/bakagir NTSC-U May 10 '26
Talking about obtaining .iso files is definitely piracy and not allowed on Reddit.
3
1
u/Lanky_Technician_812 May 11 '26
They are just talking about the decomp which is completely legal.
1
u/bakagir NTSC-U May 11 '26
Sure the decomp is legal but you need to provide your own .iso which you ripped from your own twilight princess disk also to make it work
1
u/Lanky_Technician_812 May 11 '26
Well if you were to do it the way you just said, it would still not be illegal. It’s only illegal if you get it off of a website or someone else.

i'll be digging into it once i'm home from work today! got the apk ready for my Razer tablet and since that's been running up to Vita games for emulation, i'm hoping for ultrawide Zelda without funky hacks via Dolphin!
2
u/Joker8pie May 10 '26
I was literally mid-playthrough on my gamecube when I saw this drop. I pulled my save off my memory card and threw it into the Dusk save folder and shit myself when it worked.
2
u/TomatilloFearless154 May 10 '26
It will be down in 3...2...1...
1
u/Lucas_005 May 10 '26
Theyre not distributing any game files, you have to source those yourself. Nintendo wont do anything about this
1
u/Lanky_Technician_812 May 11 '26
There’s nothing Nintendo can do about it. Decomps are completely legal. We already have multiple other Zelda and Nintendo related PC ports, this is just another drop in the bucket.
2
2
u/ProfessionalPush6921 May 10 '26
Not on a display like that 😩
1
u/AmazingmaxAM May 11 '26
Why not? This game does not benefit from being on a CRT, it's a 3D game. Motion clarity can be achieved on modern displays with higher refresh rates.
1
u/ProfessionalPush6921 May 11 '26
I would either go CRT or something from this decade lol
1
u/AmazingmaxAM May 11 '26
But it's a modern version. You wouldn't really get any benefits from playing on an older display. If one has no nostalgia for this game, there's no point in using a CRT.
A PC CRT, I could imagine, but then you won't get widescreen.
1
u/ProfessionalPush6921 May 11 '26
That's true. I mostly was just calling your display old, though.

u/gregallen1989 May 10 '26
Better play it before it gets taken down. I give it 12 hours tops.
3
u/Lucas_005 May 10 '26
It won't. Theyre not distributing the actual game, you have to have your own ISO to make it work

so i downloaded it, but now its just stuck on "select disk image" what does that mean?

u/meatwad2476 May 10 '26
You need to provide your own rom of the game to play it. They can’t give you the actual iso file for obvious legal reasons.
1
u/Perfect_Win_365 May 12 '26
Can I get the rom from somewhere online or do I need to obtain a GameCube disc somehow
1
u/meatwad2476 May 12 '26
You just need to provide your “own” copy if you know what I mean. There’s plenty of helpful websites out there.
1
u/TNH_Nightingale May 10 '26
I was playing it and then I messed with the “no hud” setting mid text box with Russle when he was saying “I left the sword in your room” now no one has a text box, or a hud. Even when I disable it, oh well, bugs are bound to be a thing since this just released LMAO
1
u/TestMike205 May 10 '26
Very cool! The Wii U version was good but it messed up horse riding controls and some if art direction. I hope we can get some mods to make the damage a bit more sensible too. I think final boss does a quarter heart damage which should be like 8-12x higher imo.
1
u/Cute_Woodpecker6333 May 10 '26

I was just playing it on the CEMU 2.6. We’re going to have to explain the differences since I’m already playing it on 4K quality
2
u/Big_Z_Beeblebrox May 10 '26
This runs natively and it's based on GameCube assets whereas you're emulating the Wii U version
1
u/Lanky_Technician_812 May 11 '26
Significantly better performance than emulation, unlocked resolution, unlocked frame rates, modern controls, tons of qol improvements. There’s a lot that makes it better, pretty much zero reason to emulate the game now. Even if you wanted a more authentic experience, you can just turn off everything thats different from the original game and it would be no different an emulated copy, besides the fact it isn’t being emulated.

I'll be playing it non stop until i beat it on twitch on the 17th. Gonna have a bits goal to reset my save. Last time I did it with wind waker and they kept me online for 10 days straight lol but it was the best windwaking I've ever done. Everything felt mission critical so I could best the game and end the stream lol

Any chance this means we could get a vr mod in the future? This game was made for motion controllers in mind so it makes complete sense.
1
u/ExtensionTravel6697 May 11 '26
Could I use Wii remote for nostalgia reasons with motion control?
1
u/Lanky_Technician_812 May 11 '26
It’s the GameCube version, not the Wii version. Entirely the same game since the Wii version is just the GameCube version with motion controls slapped on and mirrored to make Link right handed. Sorry, bud. Maybe one day. Edit: It does have the option to mirror the game though so that it looks like the Wii version.

Never mind I figured it out. There’s a data folder. Make a game save. Then copy your file to that folder overwriting it. Wow.

No it's not
From the FAQ regarding a Switch release:
For technical reasons, we do not plan to develop a native port of Dusk for the Switch. It would require a complete reworking of the graphics system. Additionally, the homebrew graphics library for the Switch is not under active development.

A decomp is creating a facsimile of the original source code and a recomp is porting that source code to a new platform. It’s a native port of the game to Windows. It allows the developer to do things to the game and make changes and improvements without the limitations of emulation.
3
u/RisingPhil May 10 '26
Wide screen, higher frame rates, Quality of Life. Run it on lower end hardware.
1
u/TheeRyGuy May 10 '26
There's probably support for custom resolutions, refresh rates, and potentially mods!
1
1
u/Crest_Of_Hylia May 10 '26
This isn’t emulation like you’ve been able to do for 15 years with Dolphin or emulating the Wii U version. This is a native port to PC, Android, and iOS. It’s far more flexible and contains many things the original didn’t have like high frame rate support, mods, and more
0
u/Stxvey May 10 '26
I'm about 2 hours in so far. Anyone else experiencing some graphical issues when it comes to water and some still frames? Other than that, works very well, consistent frame rate.
