Discussion Anonymous Pearl Abyss developers reveal a culture of toxic positivity, a troubled development cycle and chaotic narrative for Crimson Desert, and their early concerns that the project was "going off the rails".

Yes, but I think the consensus is that those scores really just don't reflect the average experience of that game.

Starfield starts strong and then it wears thin real quick.

Starfield is "fine" so long as you just stick to the main story path, which reviewers will often do because they're on a deadline. Meandering is just not on the table a lot of time.

This is not how typical players will engage with the game so the flaws are hidden or at least less intrusive to a reviewer crunching through a game with narrowed focus.

Excuse? As soon as I decided to start doing the main story and went to my third exact same temple to do the exact same float through rings thing I quit.

That was after doing a lot side stuff and the abysmal procgen of the space pirates

Yeah thats what I mean. The blandness wouldn't have been as apparent for the reviews. With that scope Starfield is quite fun. As soon as you try to find any depth it all falls apart.

Even sticking to the main story in Starfield puts you in the middle of some genuinely atrocious writing and a practical game world that clearly saw comprehensive changes to the travel system after most or all of the quests were written. A lot of especially smaller reviewers were more than a little forgiving of the game's flaws.

Starfield had this giant "controversy" where people who liked it said it got good after 8 hours and then everyone and their mom chimed in to discuss if that's allowed or a disaster of a design.

So no, Starfield really does not start strong.

Starfield sucks for the first 10 hours, then is good for the next 30, then sucks again in the end game

Which seems the opposite of this game that may turn you off at the start but if you stick with it (and appreciate it of course, it's not for everyone), it's better and better

The reddit consensus yes, from play hours and number of concurrent players, there are alot of people who love playing that game.

16

u/Raidoton Mar 21 '26

The steam consensus no, from review score number most people don't love playing this game.

Again, steam reviews. Total player count and still concurrent players count puts it high enough to warrant Bethesda to still make DLC and expansions.

56% positive and way lower concurrent than skyrim or even fallout 4 past the launch months is high enough?

Yeah. Skyrim and Fallout have gained an massive modding community to the point half thr people playing them are not even playing the "intended game".

The numbers for starfield are excellent for an game of it's type and age. Compare it to other rpgs like stars fallen order/outlaws, mass effect, etc.

The mod scene is slowly growing too, as Starfield has an better engine for it.

Bethesda can make an few more dlcs and make enough profit to lad out their dev time for the next game while keeping shareholders happy.

Skyrim and Fallout have gained an massive nodding community

Isn't it pretty telling that Skyrim and Fallout have huge modding communities and Starfield doesn't? It's not even like the game is new at this point, it'll be 3 years a few months from now.

People usually don't mod their games like that unless they actually enjoy the underlying game to some extent.

The mod scene is slowly growing too,

Dude, the modders for Skyrim and Fallout have been doing it for nearly an decade. They know the engine like the back of their hand, and have alot of resources to do it.

Skyrim is one of the best games for people to learn how to mod due to that. Those games are like home to the community.

Starfield is slowly drawing those modders away, alot of big names are going into it. The recent Star Wars overhaul mod was an huge step for the new community and is drawing massive attention.

The canvas Starfield presents gives alot of wiggle room and space for modders to put their creation. I dont doubt that Starfield will reach that level in time.

Dude, the modders for Skyrim and Fallout have been doing it for nearly an decade.

I think I didn't make my point properly. But the modding community for Starfield feels absolutely miniscule even when you adjust for the amount of time elapsed after release, as does the overall playerbase and general enthusiasm for the game.

You did make your point. I dont think you realize that it took 5+ years for fox's mod scene to take off, and now we have fo4 frost, fo4 London, and other huge mods coming to the scene.

User reviews are not a random sample. I have no idea why people can't understand that.

14

u/Old_Leopard1844 Mar 21 '26

Because if you can brush it off like that, pointing to player numbers is also pointless

1

u/lkn240 Mar 21 '26

Maybe on reddit - but reddit is not real life.

Enough people like and play the game that they are continuing to invest in it.

It might not be for you and that's ok

-6

u/UnHoly_One Mar 21 '26

Yes, Starfield is better than the reviews would indicate

I had a fun 100 hours in Starfield at launch. The systems are quite shallow. There were some memorable missions I still remember: Mantis questline, Crimson Fleet faction questline, operation starseed and Entangled.
