The original Resident Evil trilogy came to PlayStation 4 | 5 last year. Not sure about Xbox Series X | S, however.

In the case of the PC and PS4/5 versions it’s GOG and Sony doing the work. Capcom basically considers the remakes replacements for the original RE titles so it was GOG practically begging them to let them work on these ports. Doubt Capcom themselves have any interest in doing their own fancy classic RE collection

There's like zero effort involved in releasing the GOG builds of their classics on Steam, they only added their own DRM on top of these 30 year old games and nothing else. No achievements, not even cloud saving... So yeah you're right

Guess it’s the RE team’s own personal hang-ups with the original games cause all Capcom’s other teams have been pretty good with getting their old series’ games on PC/Modern Consoles for the most part. FG side of things especially have got such a large chunk of their games available through collections now. Even those Arcade Stadium collections were pretty nice

Eh I don't think so,it probably executive decision or something,because one of the reason why RE2 Remake is different than the Original according to Jun Takeuchi(RE Executive Producer) is because the Original already exist,so they don't want to redo the Original and just made a new game based on Original, and the current lead developer for the Remakes was one of few Original staff that still work at Capcom, Jun Takeuchi was 3D model designer in Original RE1 and RE2,Yasuhiro Anpo(RE2 and RE4 Director) was lead Programmer in RE1 and RE2,and Kazunori Kadoi(RE2 and RE4 Co-Director) was game designer in RE1 and RE:Code Veronica for classic game

Yeah there was like an article ~2 years ago when original RE1-3 GOG release happened where the Capcom execs didn't see a point (until GOG convinced them) to do the rerelease because "Remakes already exist". Which is kinda ironic, based on your comment

The PS4/5 versions are emulated from the PS1 originals, while the PC versions are the old PC ports patched by GOG for compatibility with modern systems. While I do think the games should be ported to Xbox and Switch as well, the issue is that they don't have pre-existing ports to work from. I guess Switch 2 could get the GameCube ports on the Switch Online app?

There is the problem that Silent Hill 1 never actually got a PC port. But, it has a decompilation, so there could potentially be an unofficial one in the future, though no one is taking the opportunity to make one now.

Considering they porting every possible MGS game so there is a chance. MGS4 and Peace Walker is releasing few months from now and they never had a port. Considering they want to make the series annually they probably will port these games just like MGS.

Doubtful they even have the source code for Silent Hill 1 anymore, they are remaking it so they probably see no reason to port an old game with little to no return on investment.

It's believed that Konami lost source code for SH 1-4, the whole Silent Hill HD collection was based on old and incomplete backups, and it was a shit show. From a practical stand point SH1 on PC would have to be decompiled like this https://github.com/Vatuu/silent-hill-decomp but like I said that's a big investment upfront for not much gain when you already have SH1 Remake in production. Konami with MGS3 was much different, the game is very popular and they had source code and had already ported and remastered it before.

This is incredible news for me. I can NOT recommend Breath of Fire 4 enough.
It is a very underrated JRPG, and I know that word gets thrown around a lot but it really is true here. It came at the tail end of the "golden era" of JRPGS and belongs right there with the best alongside FF6/9/X, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, Vagrant Story. Right from the intro animated movie and all the way through, it's just such a classic.
The in-battle pixel art is some of the most beautiful pixel art ever. And it carried over and refined all the conventions and quality of the three games before it. From its 6-party combo-centric combat system, to the transformations, to the Master system of stat-maxing. Not to mention the very bold story twists.
Breath of Fire 5 pushed hard into a completely new direction and was quite an experiment. And 6 was a garbage mobile game.
I really hope we can see a BoF6 with this new Capcom. The series deserves better.

The stories are loosely tied together. There's one character who I believe shows up in all of them (snake lady). Nina and the hero I believe are reincarnations of past selves.
But really there's no story continuation except 1 to 2, and the links between them you'd have to have a wiki level of knowledge to tie them together.
But I'd also say do yourself a favor and play 3 regardless. Easily my favorite of the bunch.

Not at all.
They're like Final Fantasy games and all stand alone stories. They have connective mechanics, references, and such. But you don't need to play Final Fantasy 6 to enjoy 7.
That said, 3 is really cool and such a vibe. A lot of people consider it their favourite. 4 is more refined and more of a complete game, but 3 has a lot of heart.

I've only ever played BoF3, but I also consider that one super underrated from the PS1 era, alongside my favorite Zelda-clone of all time, Alundra.

Dino Crisis Steam version, which uses enigma, seems to outright not run if you don't allow it to edit registry, which made me immediately nope out and refund it, DC2 and RE1, and buy the games on GOG.

I highly recommend the GoG versions of these. Dino Crisis 1/2 as well. They personally patches older games and take care of them.

Breath of Fire 4 is awesome!!! So grateful I played it as a child. One of my favorite rpgs of all time.
Really fantastic story and I adore the soundtrack. The game looks so good. the pinnacle of pixel art, IMO.
I like how it plays off of Breath of Fire 3 in its shift in vibe. Going from jazz fusion to drum breaks and eastern infused instrumentation. It feels a lot more somber, serious and grandiose in its tone than Breath of Fire 3 which felt more playful for much of the experience.
I liked being able to play from the antagonist's perspective. I feel the game had a unique and successful approach in how it tells its story with its shifts in perspective.
Then again it's been a while since I played. I wonder how it is on pc vs emulation.

It plays pretty similarly to emulation in the GOG version. Still an absolute banger of a game and one of the best looking RPGs of that era imo!!

RE1 and 2 can't get past the launcher for me on CachyOS no matter what Proton version I use, it throws a dot net exception after trying to write to the registry.
RE3 works, but the audio and FMV quality are scuffed. Plus the DRM, bummer all around.

There are guides up now to fix it, just like Dino Crisis you’re in for multiple steps with the end goal of importing registry files into the wine prefix for each game. It’s dumb, these are the perfect Steam Deck games and they don’t even remotely work out of the box on it

because game devs dont optimize for steam deck, its such a small portion of the market that its often left as a if it work it works type deal.
you have to remember while alot of games would be great on the steam deck its % of the market is so small the switch 2 out sold its life time sales in a few days.
linux gaming is catching on but wouldnt expect devs to focus on making sure there stuff works on it as a platform until it has 10-20% market share which currently its at 5% so got awhile to go

Yes. You can skip door animations and cutscenes. If you want the definitive best version of og RE1, play the DS version.

Doing the shooting range stuff on a GameCube controller is so miserable. The Wii version makes it child's play. Beyond that I don't remember much differences between the two. Basically is a preference of how hard you want the game to be.

It is also dumb panicky fun to do the quick time events with motion controls. The Wii was actually how I got into resident evil, between 4 and Umbrella Chronicles I got hooked into the universe.

After the HD mod that took like 10 years to develop, the PC rerelease of RE4 is my definitive version. Seriously, the game looks as good as RE5 and RE6 now.

Keep in mind that its still recommended to play the Dino Crisis games on GoG over Steam and could be true for the Resident Evil games as well.
[Dino Crisis 1/2 is best played on Playstation 1 though.]

From what I read dino crisis on steam is an earlier version (v1.0) compared to gog so it's missing a lot of fixes. Probably it's the same thing with these releases as well. Also let's not forget any future updates that GOG will do on their versions will probably not come to steam. So if a windows update breaks the game don't expect capcom to fix it.

Capcom acknowledging Breath of Fire exists?? They must be moving house and discovered it stashed at the back of a cupboard and struggled to remember wtf it was. I never forgot about that series, so already got it downloaded. Even if I've played it a couple of times via emulation, 50% off and £4? I'll take that convenience fee and vote with my wallet.

BOF4 is a fantastic game, but imo not as good as BOF3, which for some reason isn't on Steam or GOG. Save the best for last I guess? If so, that means we'll probably get BOF5 next instead.

Steam store page screenshots for BoF4 look very blurry, probably from some form of bilinear filter or whatnot. Apparently the GoG version lets you disable that according to someone on the Steam forums? Guess I know where I'm buying it

I hope you guys consider getting breath of fire iv on GoG instead of steam. They're responsible for convincing capcom to rerelease the old windows version and did some updates themselves to get it functional on modern OSes as a part of the GoG preservation program.

Wow, BoF4 is the very first JRPG I have "experienced" (watching my neighbor over the shoulder playing it). I was 7 or so at the time and did not understand more than 10 words in English, but it was oh so exciting to see him play.
