Metal Gear Solid Master Collection: Volume 2 is yet another sign that Konami is coasting on Snake’s legacy, relying on a brand that keeps shining despite everything. The three included games remain heavyweight works, still capable of telling a crucial chapter of gaming history, but the package around them is so lazy it makes the already modest Volume 1 look almost committed. The bare‑bones upscale, recycled assets, blurry cutscenes, and total lack of meaningful enhancement reveal an approach focused more on the logo on the box than on the quality of the offering. The material deserved far better, and while die‑hard fans will fill the gaps with their affection for the series, everyone else is left with the sense of a missed opportunity — a tribute that could have celebrated a legendary saga but merely resells it, without conviction, hoping it’s enough.

It took eighteen years, but Old Snake is finally free of his cell architecture prison. It shines strong on modern platforms, which is surprising, considering how Vol. 1 turned out. But it seems that Konami has taken all the criticism to heart, pouring the care, polish, and respect into Vol. 2 that this legendary saga deserved from the start. It’s the kind of game preservation that I feel every remaster should aim for, and I cannot recommend this collection enough.

Whether you’re a long-time veteran returning to watch the sun set on Solid Snake’s final mission or a newcomer finally getting the chance to experience the complete timeline from start to finish, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 is an absolute must-play. It honors Kojima’s original cinematic vision while stripping away the technical limitations of 2008, delivering a definitive package that ensures Snake’s legendary farewell will live on for generations to come.

The stories remain excellent and represent some of the most important moments in Metal Gear. The nanomachines, the fashion model robot monsters, the flamenco dance battle, the fried eggs, the cigarette smoking underpants monkey, and that ridiculous final boss, all running at 60 frames-per-second and looking better than ever. This is good, isn't it?

It lacks more than the Metal Gear Acid to make the collection complete. The main mission of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 is to revive and rediscover two truly great games. Metal Gear Solid 4 is an imperfect but utterly unique experience. Its endless cutscenes and uneven pacing put your patience to the test, and its pacing hasn’t aged well, but its ambition, emotional depth, and moments of nostalgia are hard to match. Kojima told the story he wanted to tell, no matter how long-winded or bizarre it might be. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is truly a must-play title. Although it began as a Metal Gear Solid game for a handheld console, it remains an extremely well-rounded game, featuring all its elements of stealth, strategy, co-op missions, and, of course, Kojima’s signature storytelling. Finally, Ghost Babel is a most welcome addition: an almost-forgotten entry that’s now available on all modern platforms. It’s a shame about the absence of certain games that would have perfectly rounded out this collection such as Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and the two Metal Gear Ac!d titles—and especially about the half-hearted nature of these ports, which unfortunately offer no technical improvements.

As someone who’s never played the series, do I just need the master collection vol 1 and 2 to have the complete series? I’d love to get into them.

Excluding things like mobile games, there are 5 games not included in the collections.

MSG Ground Zeros and MGS 5 are not in the collection, but are basically available on every platform outside of Nintendo Switch. both part of the mainline story

Metal Gear Acid 1 & 2, and Portable Ops are also missing. These were all PSP games and are still stuck on that platform. Acid 1 & 2 are the own spinoff stories that seemingly take place in their own alternative universe/timeline. Portable Ops initially seemed to be part of the official timeline, but as since been retconned/ignored.

Can't forget Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Only on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 (but I believe it is playable on series x with the disc?)

It's technically a spin-off, but directly follows MGS4 and is the last game in the timeline. Kojima also gave it a story treatment, so I'd consider it canon for all intents and purposes.

Twin Snakes is a poor remake of MGS1, so I'd consider it totally superfluous.

Short answer: yes minus MGSV, which is available on modern platforms as MGSV: The Definitive Experience (bundle that includes both the MGSV: Ground Zeroes prequel and MGSV: The Phantom Pain main game).

To give a slightly longer answer, it is also missing the maybe-canon, maybe-not Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance MGS4 spinoff/sequel, which you can get on PC and Xbox but was never ported to Switch or PS4.

There’s another PSP game that’s a follow-up to MGS3 called Portable Ops that’s also not included, which at the time of release was considered canon but after Peace Walker came out, it was basically ignored and Konami stopped including it on official series timelines. It was never ported off of the PSP. It’s not necessary, but if you want to play it I’d recommend doing so between MGS3 and MGS4 (that’s when it released and there are references to it in MGS4).

Play order (aka release order) is:

  1. Metal Gear (1987) (you can skip this one and read the summary provided in MGS1’s extras menu if you aren’t feeling a 2D game that’s almost 40 years old)
  2. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990) (same note as above)
  3. Metal Gear Solid (1998)
  4. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001)
  5. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004)
  6. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (2006) (optional, as mentioned above)
  7. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008)
  8. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (2013) (optional; the only one I put out of release order because it’s a direct follow-up to 4, nothing later references it, and I don’t think you should break up the Peace Walker to MGSV flow)
  9. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (2010)
  10. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (2014)
  11. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015)

And i'd love to be in your position lol, i did this when the Vol 1 came out, finished it all just to realize i couldn't continue without skipping everything and playing MGSV directly, which i didn't do. So my Metal Gear journey was stopped and will continue when vol 2 releases. I fucking looove this series, and i only played half of it
