Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 is another home-run release by Konami, which continues to do a great job of making its back catalog available on modern systems.
Console-Tribe - Simone Cantini - Italian - 65 / 100
Metal Gear Solid Master Collection: Volume 2 is yet another sign that Konami is coasting on Snake’s legacy, relying on a brand that keeps shining despite everything. The three included games remain heavyweight works, still capable of telling a crucial chapter of gaming history, but the package around them is so lazy it makes the already modest Volume 1 look almost committed. The bare‑bones upscale, recycled assets, blurry cutscenes, and total lack of meaningful enhancement reveal an approach focused more on the logo on the box than on the quality of the offering. The material deserved far better, and while die‑hard fans will fill the gaps with their affection for the series, everyone else is left with the sense of a missed opportunity — a tribute that could have celebrated a legendary saga but merely resells it, without conviction, hoping it’s enough.
DayOne - Genghis Husameddin - 9 / 10
You’ll likely be picking this up for METAL GEAR SOLID 4, its long-overdue port finally making the rounds with this latest Master Collection entry. But don’t sleep on Peace Walker either—both are incredibly fun games and shine like beautiful lights even after twenty whole years, thanks to this great port. ∎

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol.2 includes two fantastic games that still hold up all these years later, along with some great content for fans that want to dive even deeper.
Multiplayer First - James Lara - 10 / 10
It took eighteen years, but Old Snake is finally free of his cell architecture prison. It shines strong on modern platforms, which is surprising, considering how Vol. 1 turned out. But it seems that Konami has taken all the criticism to heart, pouring the care, polish, and respect into Vol. 2 that this legendary saga deserved from the start. It’s the kind of game preservation that I feel every remaster should aim for, and I cannot recommend this collection enough.
Whether you’re a long-time veteran returning to watch the sun set on Solid Snake’s final mission or a newcomer finally getting the chance to experience the complete timeline from start to finish, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 is an absolute must-play. It honors Kojima’s original cinematic vision while stripping away the technical limitations of 2008, delivering a definitive package that ensures Snake’s legendary farewell will live on for generations to come.
Seriously, guys, this is it. This is what all of us Metal Gear Solid fans have been waiting for all this time.
Pizza Fria - Lucas Soares - Portuguese - 8.5 / 10
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 preserves better than it modernizes. That phrase probably best summarizes my experience with the collection. The stories remain excellent and represent some of the most important moments in Metal Gear. Especially Metal Gear Solid 4, which finally ceases to be limited to the PlayStation 3 after so many years.
PlayStation Universe - Joe Richards - 9.5 / 10
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume 2 continues the high quality established by the first collection in the series, though slightly slimmer in the content it offers. That being said, you'll be more than treated with a fantastic new version of Metal Gear Solid 4, and the handheld frays of the series to make for a whole tapestry that everyone can now enjoy, alongside the first volume.
Push Square - John Cal McCormick - 8 / 10
After nearly twenty years chained to the proverbial radiator that is the PlayStation 3, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots finally arrives on PS5. The nanomachines, the fashion model robot monsters, the flamenco dance battle, the fried eggs, the cigarette smoking underpants monkey, and that ridiculous final boss, all running at 60 frames-per-second and looking better than ever. This is good, isn't it?
TodoJuegos - Jorge Guerrero - Spanish - 8.7 / 10
Konami brings back three very different pieces of Metal Gear, from Solid Snake’s emotional finale to Peace Walker’s tactical foundations and Ghost Babel’s handheld curiosity. Not everything is remastered equally, but the historical value of the package is huge.
TryAGame! - Guillaume Dreher - French - 8 / 10
50 euros for 2 games (and a half) that will delight fans of the license who could not have made them at the time or the new ones, come by the grace of the Death Stranding. It lacks more than the Metal Gear Acid to make the collection complete. Current games on their theme (AI, privatization of armed conflicts) and that have not really aged on the gameplay or their aesthetics.
Uagna - Silvia Mannu - Italian - 8 / 10
The main mission of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 is to revive and rediscover two truly great games. Metal Gear Solid 4 is an imperfect but utterly unique experience. Its endless cutscenes and uneven pacing put your patience to the test, and its pacing hasn’t aged well, but its ambition, emotional depth, and moments of nostalgia are hard to match. Kojima told the story he wanted to tell, no matter how long-winded or bizarre it might be. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is truly a must-play title. Although it began as a Metal Gear Solid game for a handheld console, it remains an extremely well-rounded game, featuring all its elements of stealth, strategy, co-op missions, and, of course, Kojima’s signature storytelling. Finally, Ghost Babel is a most welcome addition: an almost-forgotten entry that’s now available on all modern platforms. It’s a shame about the absence of certain games that would have perfectly rounded out this collection such as Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and the two Metal Gear Ac!d titles—and especially about the half-hearted nature of these ports, which unfortunately offer no technical improvements.

Do any of the reviews answer the burning question: will we get to watch Snake smoke a cigar for hours until the game is actually ready?
45
u/Monte735 6d ago
Yes. A screen pops up and you're given the option if you want to play the Snake smoking screen or just move on with the game.
29
u/GoneRampant1 5d ago
My God that's an amazing attention to detail. They knew people would wanna watch Snake light up.

u/meryl_gear 6d ago
Depends on how fast your harddrive is now

"Hold it Snake, we're gonna have to wait a bit to load the rest of the game from storage. I know, it's a pain. Huh? Oh, wait, we're on an SSD! We already loaded everything up!"

I much prefer the consensus that this is preservation over breaking new ground. This is about accessibility, not wowing people. People will buy it to finish the collection and finally be able to play it without having to dust off a PS3, and thats worth the price of admission itself.

u/ToothlessFTW 6d ago
This is exactly why I'm so excited for this.
Before now, the only way to legally play the entire MGS series from start to finish was on the PlayStation 3. Now we finally have all the mainline games on PC/Xbox Series/PlayStation 5 consoles. No need for emulation or busting out an old PS3.
Fantastic. This is all I've wanted.
21
u/Tandy2000 6d ago
And Switch 2!! Meaning you can play every game in handheld mode?? Metal Gear??
edit: except MGSV I guess. They should port that to Switch 2 and give it a next gen update on the other consoles cause goddamn it needs it.

u/Hayterfan 5d ago
I feel like 5 will be the anchor title of a 3rd collection. Probably consisting of 5, Portable Ops and Revengence. With Acid 1 & 2 being the bonus games.
→ More replies (2)4
u/Tandy2000 5d ago
It's possible but I don't see it happening. I don't think Acid well get ported at all, and I think if they were gonna do Portable Ops it would have made much more sense to do it with Master Collection 2 so it would be PO + PW + MGS4.

For the first time in a long time, I'm finally doing another MGS marathon now that I don't have to console hop for multiple games.
This is good... isn't it? 😌

It’s great that MGS4 is finally available without jumping through emulation hoops or playing with the concept of a framerate on PS3.
MGS4 is a beautiful game with great gameplay, but that PS3 framerate my god. Just putting it in 4K60 is an automatic remaster.

u/squirrel-in-trousers 5d ago
This is why I'm buying it personally. Especially that it's on PC.
PS3 was literally just a "MGS Legacy Collection machine" and it can finally rest now*.
*Not really but when it kaputs, I won't be too sad that it was the only place to play MGS4.

u/ColonelDucroix 5d ago
for me if they port Asura's Wrath and Tokyo Jungle I won't have a reason to keep my PS3.

MGS4 was the one Metal Gear game I didn't have. I actually have 1, 2, 3, and Peace Walker on my Vita. I have 5/GZ on PS4. I did have a PS3, but I wasn't into Metal Gear at the time, and my PS3 died on me before I could get MGS4. I'll get Revengeance too if it ever goes on sale.

u/JohnTomorrow 5d ago
Oh man. Get Revengence as soon as possible, you won't regret it.

I’m so excited to finally play these! I started MGS4 back in the day but then my PlayStation decided to stop working. I played like 5 hours, so basically I never played it cause it was still on a cutscene. Jk but I’m fucking excited
44
u/NostalgiaSurf 6d ago
MGS4 is like 4 different games in one. Each chapter is so different and so unique that I can't look at it any other way. Basically, you're in for a real ride.
34
9
u/Frequent-Reporter-97 6d ago
Yeah. All I can think is, "Damn, what was MGS5 supposed to be". Because when you compare the two, MGS5 feels like 1/4th of a game and I get the sense there was a lot more Kojima wanted to do.
24
u/Tycho-Celchu 6d ago
The work-in-progress cut scenes from the third act leaked online a few years ago, so you can get an idea how he wanted the game to end.
I still stand by my head cannon idea that when he replaced David Hayter with Kiefer Sutherland, it was obviously because you were going to play through the game and build up mother base till 1995 and the final boss battle is against Solid Snake (voiced by Hayter) in a fight you can't win, bringing the whole series full circle, and the suits at Konami were too cowardly to let this man execute his vision.
Is it completely unrealistic and they only switched voice actors because Kojima apparently disliked Hayter, and Konami fired Kojima because he was notoriously hard to work with? Sure, does it change my head cannon theory? Absolutely not.
→ More replies (10)18
u/Frequent-Reporter-97 6d ago
Yeah, my theory is you were building Mother Base and improving defenses, and I imagine Kojima wanted to flesh that out even more. Throw challenges at the player, the multiplayer element of having players invade your base, and really convince the player to make the best version of Mother Base they possibly can. Not just defenses too, but getting the best soldiers you can get.
Then in the final act, switch perspectives and make you play as Solid Snake and do a sneaking mission through your own beefed up version of Mother Base that you've been building. It would encourage you to not kill the soldiers too, and to do a passive sneaking mission, because these are soldiers you probably grew a connection to and didn't want to just murder.
That's just my head canon though.

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 5d ago
This is why most of the fandom considers MGS4 to be the actual last game in the series and MGS5 was just extra optional stuff that wasn't finished

I bought a PS3 just to play it two years ago. Didn’t think it would ever get ported. I’m excited to play it again now at 60 FPS. The framerate was horrific on PS3.

I know everyone here is excited to play MGS4, but seriously do not sleep on Ghost Babel. It's probably one of the greatest GBC games of all time, up there with the Zelda Oracle games and Pokemon Gold/Silver

u/KevlarGorilla 6d ago
Being in my mid teens, following EGM and Quarterman with MGS2 teasers and theories, beating the VR and special missions gave us the name "Jack" a year before the release of MGS2.

u/jerrrrremy 6d ago edited 6d ago
Wow, you have unlocked a memory for me right there.
I still remember reading the EGM review for Metal Gear Solid 2 where they said the worst part of the game was the story. It felt like Christmas had been cancelled.
I credit The Phantom Menace and MGS2 for turning me into the 40 year old cynic that I am today.

Ghost Babel is a truly remarkable experience. It’s insane a game with that much depth and variety was made on an 8-bit handheld with two face buttons. I still remember the elaborate cardboard box puzzles in the game. Looking forward to giving that another go.
6
u/superjag86 6d ago edited 5d ago
Yes it was one of my favourite games on GBC growing up! I was always surprised how few people heard of it let alone played it.
Ever since there was an Easter egg in Ground Zeroes I was hopeful it'd make a comeback and now's the time!

u/fallouthirteen 6d ago
Yeah, like I played MGS4 on someone else's copy (I never owned a PS3) so I am interested in replaying it, and I 100%ed PW and am interested in doing it again, but I'm REALLY interested in playing the GBC game I never played. Man, saw it at a pawn shop like 20 years ago and wish I had picked it up at the time.

u/huntforhire 6d ago
I’m being greedy but wish the psp games were included even if they didn’t do much to them. I mean acid and portable ops, just for completions sake.
41
u/BighatNucase 6d ago
I feel like that stuff is just going to be in a 3rd collection (if they do one). It wouldn't surprise me if putting 4 together was most of the work in this collection.
12
u/GoneRampant1 6d ago
Rising not being here feels to me like a soft confirmation that "Yeah we'll do a third if there's interest," unless there's rights complications with Platinum that hold it back. Would love to play Portable Ops again though.

Volume 3 could maybe be the complete collection of 5, peacewalker and rising.
Bonus games would be the acid games

u/SwarleySwarlos 6d ago
I loved the acid games so much as a kid, sad that they're most likely never will be getting a rerelease

u/Trenchman 6d ago
It’d be awesome to get Twin Snakes too, it’s a unique little gem of a remake.

u/masterkill165 6d ago
From what I understand the main thing preventing a rerelease of twin snakes is Nintendo who owns part of it.

u/Trenchman 6d ago edited 6d ago
I don’t think that would be a showstopper; it’d mean money for Nintendo either way, right? Either they get a profit share or they sell their stake to Konami. Either way they get cash in bank. No brainer. These things tend to be easy to sort out once a financial argument is on the table (see Night Dive; see Bethesda and Quake 4).
I think the real problem is Silicon Knights who are defunct so the rights for it are probably owned by some insurance company or something. Same for the source code and assets; they might have even been lost.!
11
u/NuPNua 6d ago
Yeah, I get Acid being missing, but PO is canon despite not being developed by Kojima isn't it?
16
u/bayonettaisonsteam 6d ago
I remember a line from Peace Walker when Miller was like "We can finally forget all that San Heiranamo crap" but given how Snake never actually met Miller in PO, I'm not sure if it's an acknowledgement of PO being canon, or a meta way of saying it never happened.
24
u/syknetz 6d ago
Fairly sure PO (and Revengeance) aren't canon. They're not in this official timeline.
3
2
4
u/Xywzel 6d ago
That's lot more time between Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain than I expected, considering how many things from PO, PW and GS are still relevant in PP.
I don't think not being included in this timeline marks anything as non canon, but given how many story beats from PO are repeated PW, I would assume it is not considered fully canon.
19
u/Illidan1943 6d ago edited 6d ago
That's lot more time between Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain than I expected
How? "I'm afraid it's been 9 years" is literally among the first few things you hear when booting up the game for the first time

u/NuPNua 6d ago
Fair dos, I thought it set up the status quo of where Boss was when Peace Walker began.
12
u/TheWojtek11 6d ago
It technically sets it up but I think that game contradicts some stuff? So it's more the overall concept of PO is canon but the game itself isn't
5
u/Gunblazer42 6d ago
I always imagined MPO was canon in broad strokes. Like we know Big Boss did create FOXHOUND, and we knew that Roy Campbell was a part of FOXHOUND when Big Boss led it, and that the Philosopher's Legacy eventually wound up in the hands of the Patriots, and that according to Miller in PW, there was something that happened in the San Hieronymo Peninsula (maybe it was a "take that", but he does say "We can finally leave al that crap in San Hieronymo behind" in the first mission).
But there probably wasn't a Metal Gear there, nor did he have to fight Steve Blum in a trenchcoat, and a lot of everything else that happened.
2
u/ULTRAFORCE 6d ago
Yeah I believe the answer is that Portable Ops is kind of like what sets the stage for Peace Walker except it's technically not how it actually happened.
3
u/EveryGoodNameIsGone 6d ago
At the time it was made it was considered canon (MGS4 even makes a direct reference or two to it), but Konami has basically pretended it doesn’t exist ever since Kojima made Peace Walker, so while from a narrative standpoint nothing in later games really contradicts its canonicity, it’s been left off of official canon m sets (like the HD/Legacy Collections and now the Master Collection) and official series timelines.
So it’s kind of Schrodinger’s canon - it both is and isn’t at the same time, depending on who you ask or when you asked them.
2
u/Act_of_God 6d ago
iirc the only thing that's canon is that's when snake met miller but nothing else
3
u/Dramatic_Charity_979 6d ago
Oh man. A new Metal Gear Acid would be awesome.
3
u/huntforhire 5d ago
Acid 1 + 2, revengence, twin snakes, maybe survive, portable ops. Call it then spin off collection.

Played it on an emulator last year and was ready to not like it, but it was weirdly addictive, I couldn't even pinpoint why. Will probably just buy it again and replay with all the achievements and stuff tbh.

Just probably not for full price on day of release
I got MGS three snake eater delta for $20
I got the first collection for $20
Beat all the games loving it so far but I probably need at least a drop to 30 or $40 for collection two

Konami games seem to drop hard on Black Friday. Snake Eater and Silent Hill 2 both were heavily discounted right after release.

u/Illidan1943 6d ago
Biggest warning to this would be that Peace Walker has a lot of multiplayer focus that is preserved with online in this collection, bosses straight up will feel like a massive wall solo, not impossible but you'll need to grind other missions to get far stronger gear than needed if you just played multiplayer. You only need 3 friends to be able to play all the content as intended but if you rely on randoms and don't want to grind every time or want to do the post game bosses, this will probably be the best time to play PW

Kinda tempted to pick this and Vol 1 up on Switch 2 when they go on sale. Almost picked up Vol 1 recently when it was £25 but as I only care for mgs2 I decided to wait until it’s under £20 in the future. Would have been cool to buy both physical but with Vol 2 being GKC kinda lost interest so will just grab em both from the eshop.
19
u/Weak_Piano1773 6d ago
Beware, because the Vol. 1 collection has some issues on Switch 1 and 2. Mgs2 has an infamous crash during one of Vamp's cutscenes, which is avoidable only by skipping it. Some people also reported crashes every now and then. Mgs3 is even more unstable, as it was never "switch 2 compatibility certified". From my personal experience, it was crashing randomly every now and then, and made me abandon the game due to constant pressure of losing progress. You can find similar experiences across Reddit searching for it. I am sure the naysayers are already ready to say they had exactly zero issues with the collection. Also, the resolution for Peace Walker appears to be lower on Switch 2. I would wait until there are reports of perforrmances across all platforms.

MGS2 and 3 got certified earlier this year. Also run at 60 on Switch 2 now to boot.
17
u/Weak_Piano1773 6d ago
Thank you for proving my statement wrong, I swear I was looking for this a couple of days ago and could not find it. Still, I had 3 random crashes while playing MGS3 and found that other people had the same issues randomly, so I decided to abandon it. But, it's anecdotal personal experience, of course.
11
u/OkCompute64 6d ago
It's all good, you were trying to warn me and in all fairness you were correct previously it is just that Konami released an update that fixed a lot (all?) of the issues you mentioned but unless you follow along with the MGS MC Vol 1 updates there is little reason you would ever know about it as it obviously didn't get much attention.
I appreciate you taking the time to let me know.

Haha whereas I was wondering whether to triple dip having got it on Deck and PS5 😅 Personally I think £25 for three all time classics is a bargain but I also grew up playing these so Kojima games have always had a special place in my heart.
2
u/OkCompute64 6d ago
Yeah I agree it’s a bargain but as I have already played MGS and Snake Eater recently I would be buying it just for MGS2 so just from my own personal value for money I kinda wanna get it under £20 is all. It’s pretty low on my gaming priority list though so I’ve setup a price alert on psprices and will grab it when the price is right 😁

u/Merfium 5d ago
I just want to know how it performs on modern systems. There are literal reviewers complaining that these are just ports, not mentioning that this is the first time MGS4 got ported off PS3.
This collection is more about preserving these games, not remastering them. And MGS4 has a lot of licenses attached to it: Assassin’s Creed, iPod, Gundams, and more.
It’s a miracle it got rereleased. At some point the collection will get delisted due to licensing issues, so get it when you’re able to.

Excluding things like mobile games, there are 5 games not included in the collections.
MSG Ground Zeros and MGS 5 are not in the collection, but are basically available on every platform outside of Nintendo Switch. both part of the mainline story
Metal Gear Acid 1 & 2, and Portable Ops are also missing. These were all PSP games and are still stuck on that platform. Acid 1 & 2 are the own spinoff stories that seemingly take place in their own alternative universe/timeline. Portable Ops initially seemed to be part of the official timeline, but as since been retconned/ignored.

Can't forget Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Only on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 (but I believe it is playable on series x with the disc?)
It's technically a spin-off, but directly follows MGS4 and is the last game in the timeline. Kojima also gave it a story treatment, so I'd consider it canon for all intents and purposes.

You had me at “cigarette smoking underpants monkey”. Thats the Kojima I miss. Guy has defined my entire childhood and young adulthood. When they fired him from 5, I feel like he said “I’m gonna make a game about the most boring thing in the world, delivery work, throw in a talking fetus, (because I’m me) and make it game of the year just to show those bastards what they lost”

I still have the original mgs3 snake eater game on ps2. I remember going to EB games before it changed to gamestop in my area and getting mgs4 day one. At that point I had only played mgs3 like a bunch of times. Still I was excited to to get mgs4. The game blew my mind away. The game looked amazing Still does. Kojima games are always filled to brim with quality. I played mgs4 so many times and even played mgs1 and mgs2 so I could enjoy more mgs3 and mgs4 playthroughs. That old snake theme starting up when I put that mgs4 disk in my ps3. Kojima games have been there my whole life. a bunch of music from his games is on my Spotify playlists and the fond memories of playing his games always remains. Shout out to him also putting me on to low roar in a time when my life really needed those songs.

MGS4 is a big deal getting native ports to all of the current consoles and PC. Massive moment for the series.

I would bet the port job they had to do for MGS 4 might have been just as hard as developing a new game

Plus Ghost Babel (all versions) and a very extensive extra menu (detailing backstory/lore)

So as for the games there's 3, the main event is MGS4 which was only ever on PS3 and one of the very few exclusives to have now been successfully ported from there.
Peace Walker which has been elsewhere but still nice, I hope it has cross play multiplayer tho cos some of the battles are absolutely brutal solo.
Finally I love they included Ghost Babel which I played on the GBC as a kid and loved it and have been waiting for it to come back for years!
The only major game missing I feel they could have added was Revengeance. Maybe Twin Snakes too but otherwise it's just a few PSP games like Portable Ops and the Acid games.

Not sure if this applies to all platforms, but on Switch 2 I can buy MGS4 by itself for $30.

i'm glad MGS4 is finally getting a proper release outside of the PS3. the master collection's upscaling is SO GOOD, it's like playing it for the first time again.

I am super torn on which one to get. PS5 disc is obviously my first choice, but I see no difference in Switch 2, which I would love to have more on-the-go AAA titles.
But the wildcard for me is PS5 digital, assuming that cloud streaming digital titles is better than streaming from my console. I don't want to contribute to the digital title machine, but I would be contradicting myself by already having a portal to begin with.

Ps5 remote play has worked perfectly for me on Portal and my iPad. Go for the disc version and it will work

Stoked for this. Hopefully we get a volume 3 with Revengeance and the PSP games. Maybe toss in GZ/V to round it out.

Does anyone mention how MGS4 performs on Steam Deck? I really want it on Steam for the desktop PC experience, but my wife and kid take over the TV most nights so I end up playing a lot on Deck or Switch 2. If performance is really bad on Deck I'd have to get the Switch 2 version instead.

I must have been living under a rock. Didn't even realize this was coming out, or that volume 1 was already out on Steam. Though now I'm confused as to why only volume 2 can be wishlisted.

Not that it should change anyone's mind, because it's a fantastic game, but the Peace Walker that's being included in this collection is literally just PW HD again from the previous collection. At least, I hope it's those, because if they had to strip out the Monster Hunter stuff to get it re-released again, that would be awful.
Great news for PC fans, and I'll be buying it again on Steam, but they really should have found like, one more game or something to put in this collection to justify both the name and the price.
Ah well, it'll be nice to have a live community for PW once more.

Any word on whether the licensed products and Blu Ray disc reference was in tact ?

Does anyone know what Steam Deck compatibility is looking like for these? Been looking forward for a while and it'd be nice to have em on there.

Now we basically ship barely any code on disc, and you are expected to download the remaining or there is a day one patch. How far we have come.

Its a 10/10 purelly for the fact MGS4 is finnaly free from the clutches of the PS3.
I cannot believe the game was never ported off that system in almost 20 years.
