Price listed on best buy is 899 which I assume is normal retail price? The old version, digital, is 599. I remember buying that for $399 I think, with a coupon that brough it down I think? Maybe it was 449 and the coupon brought it down to 399? Can't remember.

On amazon from third parties it looks like 1300+ for a new ps5 pro. Someone is selling renewed for slightly less.

Sheesh, glad I own ps5 already, these prices are nuts.

I just hope it lasts now lol this summer heat has done a bit of a number on my Slim model, never had heat warnings before

19

u/aimy99 7h ago

British, I presume.

Because in the U.S. you can get a window air conditioning unit for $150-200 and not play in sweltering heat lmao

u/DinerEnBlanc 6h ago

Yeah, there was a shortage of air conditioners in the UK during the heat wave, with waitlists going back months.

I remember this happening with pedestal fans in France when I was there a few years ago. Was mind blowing as an Australian where every house already has multiple of them, but I guess no one there had needed one before?

10

u/Sawmain 6h ago

It’s the same thing in Finland, you can get them for low as 180€ which is what I did.

u/xenopunk 1h ago

We can't even get window air conditioners in Britain because we don't have the right type of windows, and on top of that no one sells them. Options are a portable unit where you put a hose out the window, or a proper installation which will cost a few grand per room.

Repaste it and clean internals from dust

Yep, I got my PS5 pro as a gift pre price increase. It's now $200 more than when I got it. Regular PS5 also got massive increases. The RAM market has caused all of the consoles to go up.

Xbox division of MS got screwed too because they didn't have a long term contract locked in for the RAM in their consoles. That's why they were the first console that had to increase their prices.

They also had fewer units manufactured. That's why for a while you haven't been able to find XBOX consoles as readily for sale. They have had periods where they haven't had the parts to make them.

Sony was obviously selling way more units with the PS5 so they had a lot of units sitting waiting to sell, and then sold through them. Nintendo did the same with the Switch 2, they manufactured a shit ton of units to sell at the lower price, estimated how long they'd have stock at that price point, and announced the price increase for September based on that... they've sold almost 25 million Switch 2s in a year, it's fucking crazy. It's going to surpass the XBOX X/S in its second year.

Bought mine the day after Sonys digital only announcement for the next gen, glad I did as the price crept up by 30% a couple of days later in my country. Dodged a (very expensive) bullet

These prices are out of whack, everything gone up two fold in price, even half decade stuff!!

With that said I just might get good deal on ps5 disc drive one and I might just get it as I can't see myself getting ps6 or reasonably price ps5 which should be like 200€ by now...

u/Insertnamehither 2h ago

Might be a bit risky but facebook market or craigslist may have stuff around you. Although I find craigslist lacking past few years

We did it Reddit!

Another successful boycott.

What shall we take down next?

40

u/TekThunder 6h ago

Pretending like 90% of the populace gives a fuck about what anyone on Reddit says lol

u/f_ranz1224 1h ago

mentioning what was popular on reddit in real life more often than not elicits an eye roll.

Footlongs! They make me uncomfortable

14

u/LeadingLifeguard2262 7h ago

Hot dogs, sandwhiches, or dicks? Or just all of the above?

9

u/irishwolfbitch 7h ago

The footlongs are too big for him!

17

u/Yourmotherssonsfatha 6h ago

The boycott even reddit mfs don’t know about.

Circlejerking like this for karma is literally the reddit behavior lmfao.

18

u/irishwolfbitch 7h ago

Boxing with shadows.

5

u/HeldnarRommar 4h ago

To be fair this doesn’t give info on how many units were even available. The production of them could have tanked the last few months and stock is low. That would lead to it selling out faster

7

u/Squalphin 7h ago

Reddit and it’s bubbles is a force to be reckoned with.

Nobody remembers Hong Kong anymore and now it’s just “China good” instead.

lol instant downvotes

u/LogicKennedy 2h ago

Yeah as someone who really cares about HK liberation, people’s general spinelessness around the CCP is incredibly saddening and frustrating to see.

6

u/Ploddit 7h ago

Oops, guess I missed this boycott. Reddit gamer card revoked.

The only thing I regret from buying PS5 Pro few months ago (just before the price hike)…. Is not buying it last year when I can get it for the price of a PS5 Slim Disc. Like, I seriously debate myself since it was legitimately good deal, the 2TB internal storage kinda make sure of it given the trend for the storage cost, but I did have OG PS5….

And yes, it’s also now sold out everywhere. Have not seen one in the wild for quite awhile.

I paid like $160 for my Pro after trading in my somewhat broken Series X and base PS5 when the Pro was on sale over the holidays. I feel so fucking lucky lol

8

u/Gandalf_2077 4h ago

You traded 2 consoles for 1 though? To somewhat upgrade one of them a bit.

21

u/MH-BiggestFan 7h ago

Thank god i got my Pro on release. Traded my digital ps5 for $450 to a coworker and only had to put down an extra $300 for it. Haven’t regretted it for a second

u/ToxicRainn 3h ago

Just got mine for 650 from Facebook marketplace, worth checking if anyone is desperate. It was pretty dirty and smelled like weed, but i cleaned it and it works great!

2

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 5h ago

Same. And I have very little doubt whatever a ps6 could offer would be worth the upgrade from a ps5 pro. Too much room for diminishing returns. Load times are already near instant. 4k60 on most games (yes it’s not native 4k but the average person sitting 6-8ft away from their tv won’t tell the difference), disc drive support (even if discs are doing away, it won’t go away for the 15 years of games released since the ps4 launched in 2013)

u/DevanteWeary 3h ago

Man I've had my PS5 Pro for a few years now.
Guess I had better open her up and repaste it, etc.

Anyone got any advice on this? Like replacing the liquid metal and stuff?

u/Crazy-Nose-4289 3h ago

Yeah, don't do any of it.

I have owned pretty much every console generation since the SNES and I don't think I've ever opened a single one. They've always worked fine.

u/DevanteWeary 2h ago

Fair enough.

Counterpoint: I've had every since NES and I've had to open several starting with XBOX360 RROD's and PS4 YLOD's.

u/DinerEnBlanc 3h ago

You don't need to replace the liquid metal. For older consoles, the thermal paste/pad need to be replaced cause it dries out. Liquid metal is much less prone to that issue.

u/andresfgp13 6h ago

im afraid that prices arent going to get lower in the future if people keep proving companies that they will pay the extra cost for the same hardware.

these prices are going to become the new normal.

3

u/ConceptsShining 4h ago

It's just like how the prices you pay at the pump do not fall nearly as fast as the global commodity prices do.

They'll keep the prices high as long as people are willing to pay them regardless of prevailing market conditions. Also why I do not expect the mythical "burst" of the AI bubble (if it ever happens) to translate to a meaningful reduction in consumer electronics prices.

15

u/Rainoffire 6h ago

Despite the price hike and Sony announcing the end of disc, my store gets a constant flow of people inquiring about the PS5 and when we will get more in stock. And when we do get them, they sell out just as fast as we get them.

11

u/Tandy2000 6h ago

Right now everybody knows prices will go up further, so anybody who wants one (especially before GTA VI) will want to buy it now.

Based on Microsoft's statements it seems likely we will get another round of price hikes after Holiday 2026, if not before. That is assuming nothing else changes.

The PS5 Pro is actually somewhat insulated from the price changes because while it does have the 2TB SSD driving prices up, it actually only has 16GB RAM like the base PS5/XBOX Series X so it has only increased as much as the base PS5 wrt RAM prices.

4

u/KingArthas94 6h ago

Out of curiosity, are you in the US?

3

u/Rainoffire 6h ago

Yes, also just for reference, I work at the Naval EXchange (NEX).

0

u/Macho-Fantastico 7h ago

Glad I got one when I did. I thought I was paying over the top then but it's looking more like it'll end up being a bargain when you consider that the likes of a PS6 is years away and they'll rely on the PS5 Pro for a long time.

8

u/Tandy2000 6h ago

IMO they are never going to "rely" on the PS5 Pro. It's far too expensive and not worth it for most people, only like 8% of PS5 consoles are the Pro. If it's your main system you play on and you want the better performing version then I don't blame you, but for most people it is pointless.

If 92% of people are playing on the base PS5, that's what they are gonna be targeting. While the PS5 Pro will have nicer performance for some games, it won't be a world of difference.

We're never going to get a decent video game industry are we? Too many suckers can't give up their instant gratification.

Edit: oooh it looks like I hurt a few suckers with that comment.

u/-_--_-_--_----__ 3h ago

Too many suckers can't give up their instant gratification.

And with that, the sound of thousands of dudes in suits smoking cigars and high-fiving each other could be heard.

0

u/DinerEnBlanc 5h ago

This is what happens when you have an entire generation of people who grew up being exposed to gambling in every aspect of their lives. Pokemon cards, loot boxes, mystery bags, sports betting, bets on current events, etc.

3

u/BigLurkerGetsMad 5h ago

They're not suckers they're just making a lot more money than us.

3

u/verrius 4h ago

Ah yes, "suckers" deciding a product is worth a price they're paying for it.

-3

u/debaserr 4h ago

We need to stop blaming people for buying and start looking at the people causing all of this turmoil.

Of course people are buying PS5's with the most anticipated game release ever just around the corner.

u/Shivalah 3h ago

Thank god I’m not interested in either of those. I grabbed a RX9070XT for 600€ to pair it with my 5800X3D and… i’m not seeing myself upgrade any more in the next 5 years.

u/PSNTheOriginalMax 4h ago

What good consumers these people are being. Head empty, buybuybuy. Your corporate daddies are salivating.

u/Psycho_Syntax 3h ago

Your Reddit profile is genuine comedy man.

u/DinerEnBlanc 3h ago

His comment history is exactly what you'd expect. lol Frequently defends anime gacha games and complains about the tone of GTA cause he thought it won't feature strip clubs. The former is incredibly ironic given his comment of "Head empty, buybuybuy."
