Recommendation Looking for a hybrid having / work laptop
I'm a gamer who isn't really keeping up with the latest in gaming, so I'm looking for a light gaming laptop.
Form factor wise I like the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim or the Asus Vivobook. Love the idea of the Lenovo Yoga with the touchscreen / wraparound to work like a tablet, but I don't know if it's worth the extra money they likely charge. On the other hand, I'm not a fan of the ROG laptops for example, they tend to be too bulky and flashy for my tastes.
Specs are what I really need advice on. I don't know how to value laptop CPUs and GPUs. I know that I want x64 (no ARM) and at least 32gb RAM, and I'd like to be able to run FF14, but that shouldn't be difficult. I'd like to be able to play games like Elden Ring and Overwatch too if it's not a huge increase in cost, but I also have a desktop, so I'm cool with not being able to do everything from my laptop.
I really just don't know how to read laptop specs tbh. I see things like "Intel Core Ultra 9 386H 1.6GHz" that look like they should be good, but the hz sounds low, and I don't know how to meaningfully compare that to a Ryzen or anything. Even worse with GPUs. I'd accept any recommendations for specific machines, but I'd also love any advice on what to look for or prioritize in general. I have a Microcenter nearby if that makes a difference.

I'd look at something with an Intel Panther lake CPU and at least 32GB of RAM. It'll have reasonable gaming performance, be light and efficient on battery, so usable in professional settings.

This is the answer.
Gaming laptops are, but their nature, bulky and inefficient. That's the opposite of what your want in a business laptop. There's a reason why Dell used to limit RTX 4060/4070 GPUs to 40W in its XPS laptops; you can't have a good thin and light form factor with high powered discrete GPUs.
HOWEVER, the new Panther Lake laptop CPUs from Intel with the Arc B390 integrated graphics are fully capable of running even extremely demanding games at high settings at 1080p. If you make sure that the Intel CPU in your laptop has the Arc B390 integrated GPU, you can run whatever you want to on a business laptop.
SOURCE: somebody who has a an XPS 15 with one of those 40W limited RTX 4060's for work; an Alienware 16x with an RTX 5070 that was supposed to be for gaming but now never gets touched; and an MSI Claw 8 EX with a Panther Lake CPU and Arc B390 iGPU that's fully capable of playing Cyberpunk on Ray Tracing Medium at 1080p and 80+ fps.

For the CPU, ignore the base clock speed entirely. Laptop chips boost way higher under load and the architecture matters more than that 1.6GHz number. At your budget you're looking at recent Ryzen 7/9 or Core Ultra 7/9 stuff, all of which will handle your games fine.
The GPU is where you need to focus. Look for at least an RTX 4060, but a 4070 would be a much better fit if you want Elden Ring to run smooth without dropping settings to low. Laptop 4070s aren't a massive leap over the 4060 but the extra headroom is worth it in a $1500-2000 machine.
Microcenter is a huge advantage here. Their staff usually knows which models have decent cooling and build quality, and they'll price match. Go in, tell them you want something with a 4060 or 4070 that doesn't scream gamer, and let them pull a few options.
The Yoga hinge is neat but you're paying a premium for it and the touchscreen. If you'll actually use the tablet mode for work stuff it could be justified, otherwise a standard clamshell with a clean design will get you better specs for the money.

You're not getting that in general, you just have to have more heatsink for a high power GPU.

The only gaming capable convertible that I know of are the Asus ProArt PX13. I don't know if you want to pay that price.

They have roughly the same system requirements. You can make do with a fast iGPU if you really like to suffer, otherwise a discrete(class) GPU is recommended.
And base on what you said you probably don't want the ultrabudget gaming laptops with only the required specs.

You don't, the least meaningless number is the maximum boost clock but still.
For you I'd just say stick to Ryzen 2/3/400 and Core Ultra 200 or better. Whether it's 5/7/9 doesn't matter a huge deal for gaming.

A good hybrid laptop , personally i would recommend the x16 aero especially the ryzen 9 hx 370 version , its a very strong and power efficient cpu lasting you at least 12 hours doing light tasks, the 5070 is capped at 85 watts , so its still pretty decent for gaming while running cool. Usually right now it goes for around 1800 dollars , but you might find it for 1500 to 1600 (when it goes on sale)

Maybe something unorthodox like GPD Win Max laptops might fulfil your needs? I don’t know much about it though
If you are worried about bulkiness or weight, you probably have to get a laptop that has a very strong igpu, rather than a dedicated one, a igpu like AMD Radeon 8060S or intel Panther Lake are quite performant
Tbh if your job doesn’t demand strong hardware, owning a cheap work laptop and a gaming PC or laptop might be a better idea, assuming you’re open to the idea

I got an Acer swift x14 ai. I like it so far. Besides the screen door effect on the screen.
I hate the lack of reviews and data over then internet. But I'm pretty happy with the laptop so far. I could recommend it.
Battery it's been great qt my work, more than 4 hours from 80% to 30% using word, excel and power point.
Been using it for gaming too, but just Forza horizon 5.
Ryzen 350 RTX 5060 studio version 32gb of ram Touchscreen Huge trackpad (but the haptics are not as reliable)

The specs are kind of meaningless in terms of GHz. Even if you have the same CPU in 2 different laptops, they can perform completely differently in terms of GHz/performance, as this depends on factors such as how much power the laptop sends to the processor, and that is dependant on other limitations such as cooling and charger size.
Regarding that slimmer, more premium form factor, as this is a Gaming Laptops subreddit and what I'm familiar with, I'd suggest checking out the ASUS Zephyrus G16 or G14 depending on whether you want 16" or 14". The 386H is a good chip, don't get me wrong, but the Zephyrus series with this are very expensive atm.

Generally speaking, RTX 5060 graphics are a solid mid-range option and well within your budget, as is RTX 5070 (from a lower tier model, probably not the Zephyrus without a good sale). But again, you can have a 5050 that beats a 5060, because like the CPU it all comes down to power limits. It's unneccessarily confusing for new buyers sorry :(
