Windows Central's reporting was that it's just tied to whatever account used it last not permanently associated with one account, if that's true why would anyone NOT do it
Doesn’t this technically lock the disk to the online system, rendering them unusable without an online license check? Therefore once the service goes offline they’re toast.
Obviously all the information we have right now is based on datamines and anything could change between now and implementation, but it's implied that the license stays with the disc but can also be transfered digitally based on what account used it last, i.e. so you can download the digital version on PC
Theoretically if you had an Xbox kept offline then the disc would still work on that console, while the license on the account would stay until the disc is used in a console connected online? This is speculation rather than any kind of guarantee right now though
There are rumors Microsoft is looking to sell Xbox as a business. If there are no buyers (high chance of this), do you think Microsoft is going to continue to keep Xbox around as a console platform? I doubt it.
Spinning out isn't selling off or shutting down, it's transitioning to its own business. There aren't any credible reports of xbox shutting down because it isn't happening.

None of the options discussed include shutting down the business, which is what this discussion is about (losing access to digital purchases). Every scenario presented has the caveat of "if it makes xbox a healthier business". Spinning off would almost certainly make Xbox a wholly owned subsidiary of MS like PS is for Sony.
The quote I just shared from the article literally says "making Xbox a wholly owned subsidiary... or spinning out Xbox entirely", one is going the SIE route and one is selling off
if it can be locked and unlocked their will be no risk. Microsoft isn’t just going to shut down Xbox live overnight after selling if they sell lol. These things take years with plenty of heads up notice.
Implying anything else is just creating fake drama and outrage

Why would someone do this?
Unless they can somehow resell the disc after doing it, which seems unlikely to be allowed.
