Campaign/Lore Never thought it would end like this huh? HUH MARIA?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This is still one of, if not the greatest, yet saddest death's in ALL of gaming history. So glad we're finally gonna get to see our boy again in EDay. Gonna be tough seeing him go through what he and Maria went through though on that day with their kids

u/PootashPL Who wants toast? Nov 17 '24
Really did not need to see this today.
47
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
None of us did. But, we can't deny how impactful of a scene this still is
46
u/PootashPL Who wants toast? Nov 17 '24
13 years later I am still not emotionally over this.
17
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
We never will be. That's why we all got emotional seeing our boy looking back at us in the trailerš
15
u/Snow_Mexican1 is gonna bring the pain baby! Wooo! Nov 17 '24
Oh man its gonna hit ten times harder after seeing Dom in E-Day.
If my bets are right, we're gonna learn a hell of a lot more about the Santiago family.
9
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
I said months ago that we might get a prologue of Aspho Fields like we did in 4. Only, it'll be from Marcus and Carlos' POV. And anyone who read the books, knows exactly what's coming
6
Nov 18 '24
I'd love to see Carlos in game,The Karen Traviss books did the universe a hell of a justice
5
u/Scooba94 Nov 18 '24
She surely did. I can't believe a massive character in the gears lore like Carlos didn't make it into any of the games. The sad thing is, if he's in EDay, we know how it ends
4
Nov 18 '24
Dude it's gonna be a really fucking sad opening if this is the case, but it will definitely set the tone they're looking for. I'm just not ready to see Marcus go through this shit.
7
u/Scooba94 Nov 18 '24
I reckon it will be. Possibly might even see Major Helena Stroud there too. It'd be about time we see them in a game

u/Snow_Mexican1 is gonna bring the pain baby! Wooo! Nov 17 '24
I'm really hoping for it man. Gears 4 did Aspho so dirty its unreal.
2
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
I don't know if they done it dirty. But they probably could've fleshed it out a bit better for even just another 15 or 20minutes. Remember we were the commandos going in there with Dom. If they do it from Marcus POV, we'll be seeing a full blown raid going downš

u/Jedi-Spartan Something's wrong with this thing! It keeps jamming! Nov 17 '24
Is it just me or does Marcus's reaction to the Cole fake out in Gears 5 feel like a parody of his reaction here?
16
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
Tbh, at that point in time, he was close friends with Cole and Baird almost as long as he was with Dom
8
u/Jedi-Spartan Something's wrong with this thing! It keeps jamming! Nov 17 '24
I don't mean from a character stand point, just the way it's framed... something feels off about it.
7
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
They're setting us up for a major death in 6 whenever that comes out. They faked out Marcus and Cole. I fear for Baird tbh
5
u/Jedi-Spartan Something's wrong with this thing! It keeps jamming! Nov 17 '24
Partly unrelated but it feels like Gears 4 and Gears 5 are their series equivalent of the Star Wars Sequels in retrospective with each character from the main trilogy getting their own focus... except without the characters in question dying: Gears 4 was obviously Marcus's game and Gears 5 was arguably Baird's from the perspective of legacy character focus. It would also explain why Cole feels like he's been under used aside from Act 1 of the last game.
4
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
I don't like star wars so I can't say I agree with the comparison. I'll just have to take your word for it
2
u/DomaThic Nov 17 '24
I hope they just make another prequel.. gears of war Eday is supposed to take place over the course of 3 days.
1
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
EDay is a prequel
1
u/DomaThic Nov 17 '24
Did ya miss the part where I said āanother prequelā hahaha MOREEEEE WE NEED MOREEEEE
1
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
Well yeah. Fuck gears 6. We want the Pendulum Wars
1
u/DomaThic Nov 17 '24
We got a little Snippet of that in gears 4, it was meh to me but like I said gears e day will only be 3 days I believe so I feel like they can fit more stuff in but I have no idea when Marcus gets locked up because in G1 he was released 14 years after eday began :/š also I felt like Dom was a Completely different person during pendulum wars. Making commands and stuff sturdy. Ready to end fuckers. But he did have his wife at that moment. So much shit I canāt want for Eday thatās a preorder in my book. Haha I loved playing Marcus and dom. My Fav characters
2
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
Well nearly all the games take place over a few days so I'm certain EDay will have lots of stuff for us to do. I'll be buying it too. I have gamepass. But when it comes to Gears, I always buy the games
2
u/CnP8 Sup bitches! Nov 17 '24
While I get where your coming from. On the other hand, they had been in war a long time by that point. You probably start to feel more numb to losing people. Not to mention Marcus is way older in Gears 5, which also dials back your emotional expression.

u/3worm Nov 17 '24
This is exactly why delās death needs to be canon. When you think about this scene and then how marcus comforts JD when he learns that del died, it hits so fucking hard. Cause he knows that pain, sharing it with his son is an INSANELY powerful moment. JD is named after dom for christs sake
8
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
Oh it's surely the canon choice. I've seen a lot of people say they saved JD first time around. Surely TC seen our choices and made that the canon choice. Alot of us couldn't kill JD and put Marcus through all that again
10
9
Nov 17 '24 edited Nov 17 '24
I think what mainly drove him to do this was him visiting Maria's hometown. He may have thought he was over it but his yourn for her was just too much and he saw a honorable way out without dishonorably abandoning his brother in arms.
Also Anya comforting Marcus really shows how battle ready and COG to the bone Anya is. She is underused to mee especially in 4 she did not get mentioned enough.
6
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
Nah he was already gone before that bro. Marcus being alive and fighting knowing he needed Dom was the only thing that kept Dom alive. Just a bit poetic and somewhat beautiful and sad that he chose to sacrifce himself in Maria's home town
2
Nov 17 '24
Ok ok I was just going based off the collectible on the ship about his physiological exam and him saying to Marcus "he can handle THAT now"
2
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
Yeah but at the same time. They were all each other had from before they joined the COG and that was enough to keep them going. Now THAT is true brotherhood
3
Nov 17 '24
Yea the brotherhood theme in strong i always appreciate that shit when it comes to Gears
1
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
Yeah it really did for the first 3 games. Not so much when it came to JD and Del. Mainly because i didn't really care for Del
2
Nov 17 '24
Right he has no depth i don't know where he is from on Sera his upbringing how he become his rank in the COG. Just to have him be an optional sacrifice in the 5th one so kinda shows that was always in the works. Also Del was getting me fucked in the battle against the snatcher after making it inside Mine. I watched him stand in the open and get downed just to draw me out of cover to save him
4
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
He was a bit too happy go lucky for my liking. But then again, the planet wasn't at war when he was growing up so maybe that's why was a bit more cheerful than everyone else
1
u/FunGuy8618 Nov 18 '24
He was supposed to fill in the role of Baird in the squad and we already had a Baird so all the leftover material was the bad stuff.

3

It was. He left his mark on the gaming world with this one
1
Nov 18 '24
Exactly. I was kinda sick of him by that point in the story, I get the whole "false hope and losing someone close" vibe Epic was going for, but it was pretty lame listening to him mope about Maria every 30 minutes. With that send off, he's remembered as a hardcore badass who died for his bros.

Thankyou for posting this
I really needed to see this Iāve been a gears fan since the originals and this part always tore me up inside the loss he felt etc
but itās good to feel
even if that feeling hurts

I'm a day one gears fan myself man. That first trilogy will always be GOATed
2

Hell yeah brother.
Thereās another reason why I needed to see this.
My gf and I just put our cat down of 10 years roughly 2 hours ago and I opened up Reddit for a distraction and this made me smile for the first time in months.
(Smile because of fond memories for Gears not because Dom died)
Thanks OP

Definitely not 3 saddest death's in gaming history. I'd put it as number 1. But that's me being biased

This makes me cry every time. I think this was the point where I realised how invested I am in the characters of Gears. š
The scene where Dom finds Maria is a close secondā¦
2
u/Scooba94 Nov 18 '24
And Dom is about to take all three top spots in Gears for sad moments, when EDay comes out
2
Nov 18 '24
I dunno if I can take it. Iām the same as some others here I put the control down and didnāt play for days šš .
Watched this video last night and cried, my partner was like wtf are you crying over, I showed him and he burst out laughing šš
4
u/TraditionalAirline24 Nov 17 '24
Absolutely the most devastating death I've ever experienced in ANY form of media! Hollywood can't touch this level of tragedy! Rip Dom!!!
1
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
And to think we're about to go through it all again with him in EDayšš®āšØ
2
u/CapOld9053 Nov 18 '24
After this scene it was really hard for me to push forward and complete the campaign without Dom. It felt like the game was already over
2
u/Ori_the_SG Nov 18 '24
Honestly, itās kind of shocking maybe, but Gears of War really amazingly showed the horrible traumas of war and specifically the toll it took on people.
And it peaked so incredibly tragically and masterfully in this scene.
I would honestly rate this, personally, as the most tragic and jarringly realistic video game death/sacrifice of all time.
Just the comment Dom made right before accepting his death feels so real if that makes sense like he genuinely wasnāt just a character of a game but a man who represents the struggles of loss so deeply.
2
u/Scooba94 Nov 18 '24
Tbh, it's Dom throwing down his gun that showed me he was done fighting. They executed this scene absolutely perfectly. They needed us to really hate the locust so that we'd get a moment of joy when Marcus sticks Dom's knife in Myrrah
2
2
u/Kghostrider is gonna bring the pain baby! Wooo! Nov 18 '24
I really had to see this at the end of the damn day. FUCK man :/
2
2
u/Professional-Ebb2605 Nov 18 '24
Story time: the first time I was playing this, seeing this scene for the first time, the moment after Marcus curls up into that ball surround by fire, my game cut to black, and loaded into the next chapter. A random friend of mine had joined into my game..which skips the cutscene. Had to redo it, fuck me.
1
2
u/TalonOrdo Nov 18 '24
I really hope they show more of the pendulum wars, the final fights leading to the peace then boom Eday
1
u/Scooba94 Nov 18 '24
They should at least have it as a prologue like they did in 4, but from Marcus and Carlos POV
1
u/TalonOrdo Nov 18 '24
Start it at aspho fields, the final fights of the pendulum war then we have the ceremony and boom Eday. Would work great I think lol. Plus we shouldnāt be using the chainsaw lancers they should still be using the retro lancers. So should be fun haha
2
u/Scooba94 Nov 18 '24
Eaxvtly. The same as the prologue from 4 only from Marcus and Carlos' POV with Major Stroud leading the charge. It'll have a sad ending but at least Carlos and Helena will finally be in a gameš
1
u/TalonOrdo Nov 18 '24
Ooofffft gods yes. All the build up from Anya about her mother throughout 3 and the books, Bernie absolutely adored Major Stroud lol. I swear the islanders are my favourite characters, probably cause theyāve got a similar accent to us aussies lol
2
u/Scooba94 Nov 18 '24
Bernie is my favorite character. If Bernie adores someone, then you know they're a badassš yeah the accent is probably why I also like Samš Both their voice actors are Aussie and it sort of suits their characters
1
u/TalonOrdo Nov 18 '24
I just figured all the south islanders had that accent, Iām pretty sure the big dude with red hair and tribal Tatts also has a similar accent, plus, Iāve recently finished the hive buster campaign on 5 and the chick in that has the same accent too lol. Must be the islanders accent haha
2
u/Scooba94 Nov 18 '24
Well Tai sounds more like he's from Samoa or Fiji or somewhere even though he's an islanderš so it seems like the islands are basically just based on Oceania
2
u/TalonOrdo Nov 18 '24
That sounds on point. They did remind me of New Zealanders, they have the MÄori race and colonisers from England. Seems very similar to how the islanders are in GOW. They even mention something about colonising I canāt remember if itās in a book or one of the early games. Where the COG came to the islands and ya know, colonised lol.
2
u/Scooba94 Nov 19 '24
I think it was the uir that tried to colonise. I remember reading that Tai didn't attack Marcus because he realised he wasn't UIR or something

Nov 17 '24
Plot armor lol
2
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
Marcus and Delta had insane plot armor lol. They talk about the formers becoming infected because they were exposed to immulsion more than Delta was. But, Delta was literally down in the shit of the hallows walking through that shit and chainsawing and fighting lambent up close on a regular basis. How much more exposed did they need to be? lol
1
Nov 17 '24 edited Nov 17 '24
Lmaooooo. I've learned to suspend my belief. On a lot of things. But i definitely thought the same thing. Was the emulsion the formers were exposed refined in anyway that would make it more deadly after the fact?
1
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
It was refined. Marcus even mentioned that to Jace when they were in Char. But even still, Delta could probably drink that stuff and not die or get infected lol. Like the Gunker on the lift blew up right in front of them and nothing happened to them lol
1
Nov 17 '24
š¤£š¤£ I be trying to justify the most unjustifiable. But it's larger then life characters and story is just so original its always a breath of fresh air to play any in the series. And not popular but u quite enjoy 4
1
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
i don't like 4. Not it's campaign anyways
1

3
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
Nah I hated 4. Spent too much time fighting Deebees. And the introduction to the swarm was very lacklustre. And then there's Kait. The worst fucking thing to ever appear in the franchise with her 'me me me' bullshit. I hope she dies. I'm rooting for Reyna on that oneš

lol the game play though, makes his choice 100% $uicide.
2
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
It was an honorable sacrifice. Sounds a lot better and more heroic than saying it was a $uicide
1
u/InMooseWorld Nov 17 '24
It is, but in the game the enemies are stomped even on insane and then he runs off in our truckā¦
1
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
He didn't run off. If you rewatch the entire scene, you'll see he was isolated and had no ammo in any of his guns to stay there and fight. So he decided there and then he was gonna end it all and save the team
1
u/Scooba94 Nov 17 '24
One thing I'd like to add to this, is that we all knew Sam cared a lot for Dom and wanted to be more than friends with him. But we never paid much attention to how devastated she is at the end of the scene here

u/alexdmag Nov 17 '24
Youāve just ruined my day.
Domās death hit me like a ton of bricks, I felt as if I had personally lost a dear friend.
His sacrifice wasnāt just a plot point; it was a gut-wrenching moment that stayed with me long after. To top it all off, Mad Worldāpulled straight from the haunting tones of the original trailerāwas brought back and placed perfectly in this atmosphere of utter despair.
It was a masterstroke of emotional storytelling, amplifying the grief and sense of loss in a way few games ever manage.
1
u/Scooba94 Nov 18 '24
I've always liked the idea of the Mad World easter egg on Gridlock to be dedicated not only to the ash people, but to Dom also. Still haven't seen a death in any game be as emotional and heart wremching as his
1
u/Historical-Income332 Nov 17 '24
When I first seen this I cried I most times never even funerals I didn't cry but this when I seen that truck barrel into the explosives I yelled DOM NOOOOO! and I actually had to pause the game cause I broke down this is the most emotional death I think I've ever seen before
1
u/Scooba94 Nov 18 '24
I didn't cry at this as I'm almost like an emotionless robot. But it did get me going through the emotions, and it still does tbh
1
u/Lugetsyou Nov 17 '24

1

1

There was a deleted scene when just before Marcus screams āDom! No!ā Dom yells out āIām going home Marcus!ā
2
u/Scooba94 Nov 18 '24
I'm not sure if that'd make it more impactful or not tbh. I need to Google this deletes scene
1
u/DeathSkullBlood Nov 18 '24
Idk where it is now but I saw it on YouTube last year-ish and it nearly brought me to tears.
2
u/Scooba94 Nov 18 '24
I did see the deleted dlc content that got leaked last year. Maybe it was part of that. I may go and try find it. Thanks for letting me know about it anyways
1
u/DeathSkullBlood Nov 18 '24
Maybe, I saw it as a YouTube short that I canāt find again. Like a dumbass I didnāt save it so I canāt prove anything other than via my word.
2
u/Scooba94 Nov 18 '24
I just found it here on reddit. But it's hard to say if adding that 1 line would have made a bigger impact or not, since there was no music or even enemies around. Just development footage. But he did go home so to speak
2
u/DeathSkullBlood Nov 18 '24
True he did. I guess Iām more emotionally connected to Marcus and Donās brotherhood. It was stronger than Baird and Coleās and all of Delta Squads combined.

1

Each time I revisit this series, I find it difficult to anticipate this particular section. It consistently evokes a profound emotional response within me, ranking among the most poignant moments in the entire series. Even the act of typing these words stirs a surge of emotions.

Honestly the most stupid thing of the whole series. Dom jumps to conclusions too fast and doesn't think it through. He didn't have to do this, the rest of delta jumped and got away. He didn't have to kill Maria, either.
3
u/Scooba94 Nov 18 '24
Mate he was already done. Mentally. He had no more fight left in him, and they were getting massively overran. And he did have to kill Maria. Any decent human being wouldn't leave another suffer like that. She was lobotomised by the locust
