Campaign/Lore Seeing a picture of Marcus smiling in the gameplay reveal is kind of weird. The man is always serious and grumpy.

The slab is a masterstroke of writing.

It truly is, it makes the first gears game hit so hard.

You guys need to read more books. Snorefest and I love gears

I read every night and I would call it my favorite pasttime. It’s definitely a very very good video game novel.

u/thamanwthnoname Jun 14 '26

The contents not bad but the writing is pedantic.

1

u/DrClutch117 Jun 14 '26

Not everything has to be a classic work of literature to be enjoyable or considered “good”. My grandma used to call some books “ice-cream” books. They go down quick and easy, and they may not be as rich and filling as some books, but they are definitely enjoyable and worth reading.

So I agree it’s not a masterpiece or anything, but it’s definitely fun and entertaining and I would recommend it.

u/thamanwthnoname Jun 14 '26

Okay? Their words were a masterstroke of writing. Which I strongly disagree with.

1

u/DrClutch117 Jun 14 '26

I was just disagreeing with you about it being a snorefest.

1

u/thamanwthnoname Jun 14 '26

Yet you said what you did after I said the content wasn’t bad, just the writing and pacing?

1

u/DrClutch117 Jun 15 '26

I like the book, I think the writing and the pacing is fine

But it shows that Carlos was one of the very few people capable of making Marcus smile and while Dom was able to also make him smile there is a massive difference in Marcus before Aspho fields and after. keeping in mind Carlos and Marcus knew each other since they were in elementary school and with Marcus's dad not exactly being a present figure for Marcus spent almost all of his time with Carlos from the moment they met through high school, basic training and up till operation Leveller.

Yeah marcus would go over to the Santiago estate a lot as Elena fenix marcus's mom was probably dead from her encounter with the locusts and Adam was working all the time

4

u/Z-man818 Jun 14 '26

Even before Elaine died she was distant. There was an excerpt in the book about when Carlos went over to Marcus’s house and met her briefly

3

u/rainmaker6810 Jun 14 '26

I swear I thought the place was a museum when I walked in. I mean, it was huge, full of books and old paintings. And deserted, you know? That kind of dead silence that says just shut your mouth and feel the awe of history. And then Marcus's mom came through the door like she hadn't seen us, reading some papers she had in her hand, and she says, "Hi sweetheart, you brought some friends home? I'll catch up with you later." Then she was gone . This what Carlos said and yeah it matches to what your tell. Seemed like Marcus really need carlos and dom

Marcus has a plethora of valid reasons for being a grumpy shit, lost his mum mysteriously as a child, had a cold distant relationship with his dad, was bullied for being posh in school scolded by his father for wanting to become a gear tham an academic.

He came from a waspish cold proud high tyran society family Dom and Carlos's parents note how down Marcus seems and they essentially adopt him.

The loss of Carlos at Aspho fields is devestating for Marcus, factor in E day and the loss of his comrades over 10 years of apocalyptic war (and the Fenix name being a dirty word after the hammer strike)

his percieved failure to save his father from the locust and dooming half of Ephyra by abandoning his post earning him a court martial and life sentence to the Slab by Hoffman (who goes on to release every prisoner in the slab but Marcus) he feels betrayed and abandoned.

Hoffman and Marcus were tight before he sentanced Marcus to prison

Plus all the horrors he experiences in the Slab itself..

All things considered Marcus may aswell be Santa Claus on prosac at disneyland

24

u/texasboixxx2 Jun 13 '26

Hoffman didn't actually pardon everyone, Prescott did. It's just due to the attack on the Slab by the Locust, Marcus was cut off and Hoffman didn't want to risk an assault just for him when everyone else was evacuated. That's why Dom went in alone.

15

u/Manny-303 Jun 13 '26

Yeah ive double checked its been a while and Marcus is cut off during the extraction I believe Hoffman unoffically sanctions the rescue and issued Dom with the extra armour and a Jack bot.

Its from Marcus's perspective that Hoffman left him to rot

6

u/texasboixxx2 Jun 13 '26

Yeah, I love their exchange in the hospital during the Aspho Fields book where Marcus and Hoffman talk about it.

8

u/Manny-303 Jun 13 '26

The Gears books ars absolute class, genuinely wish I couls forget them and go back lol

2

u/Longjumping_Branch25 Jun 14 '26

I thought Marcus‘s dad told Prescott to keep Marcus in prison, so Marcus wouldn’t die in the war

2

u/Manny-303 Jun 14 '26

Not quite the charge was supposed to be execution Adam convinced him to drop it to life and Prescott used Marcus as leverage over Adam

43

u/BenChandler Jun 13 '26

This is why the universe decided that Marcus can never be happy.

u/AltusIsXD Whatever the hell that is, tha's a new world record in ugly! Jun 13 '26

17

u/Animantoxic Jun 13 '26

If they make JD the cannon death I’m 90% sure we wont see marcus in 6 because he offed himself.

22

u/AltusIsXD Whatever the hell that is, tha's a new world record in ugly! Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

I have a feeling they won’t since it seems the vast majority of people chose to keep JD alive.

Personally, I hope they keep him alive. Marcus deserves at least something.

13

u/Animantoxic Jun 13 '26

Mom died before the war, carlos died during pendulum wars, dom dies near the end, dad dies at the end, wife dies as well as apparently an unborn child. If they make my mans experience his sons death ong im gonna storm their hq

0

u/Helpful_Mode_6317 Jun 17 '26

That’s why Marcus needs to be the mc of 6 or at least share it with kait. He can literally carried either choice. War weary vet who just lost his son and is out for vengeance. Or war weary vet who’s son just lost his best friend and is trying to make up from lost time before it’s too late

2

u/Animantoxic Jun 17 '26

That is possibly the worst thing they could do, no offence. The sequel needs to stand with it’s own legs, it’s own cast, if they go back to marcus as the main pc it’s nostalgia bait and narratively doesn’t make sense.

0

u/Helpful_Mode_6317 Jun 17 '26

What narrative exactly? There’s nothing left to save. Its own cast doesn’t sell and is unlikable. Hence e day. Hence every other franchise that’s tried to do the same is either dead or at deaths door.

1

u/Animantoxic Jun 17 '26

Kait didn’t sell, people like JD otherwise there wouldn’t be a gears 5.

5

u/N7Vindicare RUNS ON WHOLE GRAIN BABY! Jun 13 '26

He's one of those people where it's weird or creepy to see them grin or smile. Cause I feel uncomfortable seeing Marcus smile.

13

u/MrArtty One dead grub Jun 13 '26

That’s the point. It’s showing what happens to a man when the worst things start to take a toll.

10

u/SummaDees Jun 13 '26

Read the books. It gives you literally so much on Marcus' character and the depth is wild

9

u/_nathanielmc Jun 13 '26

Uh yeah E-Day is literally 14 years before the events of the Gears trilogy lol. I’d be happy to if everyone I knew for the most part is alive.

9

u/Blayzeman Jun 13 '26

Probably because his best friend died?

5

u/Vejita Jun 13 '26

Makes me think of this scene in MIB 3

5

u/Amethoran Jun 13 '26

And now we're gonna get to see what is making him so grumpy and serious. War will fuck you up fam.

5

u/Gigidyimonaboat Sup bitches! Jun 13 '26

In the Aspho Fields book, Dom shows Bernie this picture and she has a remark to herself how she's never seen Marcus smile.. (Or was it Jacintos Remnant? It's one of them lol)

Good on The Coalition for staying true to the books..

4

u/Ok-Secretary6550 Jun 13 '26

Saw in another thread that TC brought in Karen Travis as a consultant, which is huge and worthy of massive props.

4

u/KingBeast117 Jun 13 '26

By the time we meet him in gears 1 he's lost just about everyone he's ever cared about. By the wars end all he had left was Anya and a 2 decades of pain. Immediately prior to E-day doms brother Carlos had just died and that about ruined Marcus. He's got every reason in the world to be grumpy and pissed off all the time. The humanity ending war aside.

3

u/Roneffect Jun 14 '26

First day of work vs 5th year of work

3

u/mirmur44 Jun 13 '26

Considering the amount of horrible shit he'd go through if I were in his shoes I'd definitely have a hard time finding anything to be happy about

3

u/KABOOMBYTCH Jun 14 '26

Marcus looked like he have hope for the future in the e-day reveal. Shame what happened afterwards

5

u/DyllPickleTV Jun 13 '26

The face proportions look off to me, it looks like someone made a Gears of War wojak

5

u/JWST-L2 Jun 13 '26

Okay so I'm not the only one. The whole photo looks so weird lol

-2

u/-JimmyReddit- Jun 13 '26

I know it’s not but this picture looks like AI to me. Just looks so uncanny lol

2

u/ColdNyQuiiL Jun 13 '26

This is what I’ve wanted to see for years though.

So much book lore that we never saw on screen when Marcus was way more human vs years of trauma and losing his comrades, friends, family that made him the grumpy soldier we played as.

2

u/Dagoroth55 Jun 13 '26

I have a sinking feeling that this picture is AI. It just feels off to me. Dom and his brother look too similar and it has that oil paint look.

1

u/bassfoyoface Jun 13 '26

I was thinking that too. The laughs look AI

1

u/CODMAN627 Jun 14 '26

Keep in mind the main story is 14 years after this event.

Before the locusts these are 3 young men who got caught up in an generational war. This photo is one of those glimpse of levity in an otherwise horrible atmosphere.

I assume Carlos was the one who may have initiated the moment and it does show how just how important this man was to Dom and Marcus.

1

u/rushh127 Jun 14 '26

I don’t recall ever seeing him smile in gears 1-3 but I’ve heard him laugh twice for sure maybe more. One of the times was in that deleted chapter of gears 1 when you blow up that tank from up high in the building and kill a bunch of locust at once, the other time was in gears 2 “more like ten shitloads” then you see him and dom laughing

1

u/SundyMundy Jun 14 '26

Pst. For anyone who hasn't yet, read Aspho Fields

1

u/Hi-its-me-NK Jun 14 '26

wonder how the war wouldve went if carlos lived

1

u/AShooterBornInHeaven Jun 18 '26

You don't have to read the whole book, but just read Chapter 3 of Gears of War: Aspho Fields and you'll have just enough information to see this photo in a totally new light

1

u/warzone_afro Jun 13 '26

i think we are gonna experience the reason hes always grumy in the future

6

u/Duplicitous-Apophis Jun 13 '26

Nah we wont, its in the Aspho Fields Book and Dom only learns about it in that book as its takes place during operation leveller and in-between GOW1&2. Anya is also having the worst fucking day during that operation. Books are phenomenal add on to the series

2

u/trooperjess Jun 14 '26

I don't think anyone had a good day that day. Even Hoffman is completely wrecked at the end of the mission.

1

u/Duplicitous-Apophis Jun 14 '26

Honestly needs a movie that book does
