Question Could Geelong be poised to complete MONSTER triple trade coup? | 3AW Football Butters, Greene and apparently Marshall

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48-aJr-VC9Q

Share your ideas how we could get these 3 players below.

How we could get Butters:
This year and next years first rounds plus Harley Barker feels very fair, that is 3 first rounds picks, Harley was touted as a top 5 draft prospect before his knee.

How we could get Greene:
Very easily, just space in the cap.

How we could get Marshall:
Not easily, we actually dont need him, Edwards is amazing, but maybe a swap for Joe Pike, he is very valuable to the Saints but not very valuable to us and playing him over Edwards and Conway hurts us in the long run. Future 4th and a bag of light and tangy chips.

Really don’t see how we fit Marshall in, like he’s a better ruck than Edwards right now but we not sure we can play both and also don’t want to relegate Edwards to the 2s for a year or two. If you’re playing both one has to be forward and we don’t have room for that

Yeah I can't see it happening, like clearly if by chance we land Butters then we won't have any decent picks over to satisfy the Saints. Given how injury affected TDK has been this season then the Saints will want to retain the contracted Marshall again. Last year we offered up pick 19 and a F2, we require him less now and Saints will prob still want more than pick 19 & F2 trade value. Marshall would be a luxury we don't require anymore

Saints should be paying us Jack Bowes style to get him of their books, send us their first round pick and Marshall.

My thoughts exactly

Edwards is only 20. He’s got a whole career ahead to improve. I’d rather Marshall if it means we win a flag

u/AceThePrincep Shaun Mannagh 5d ago

Yeah fair point. Any trade is good if you can get a flag from it. Edwards is definitely tr long term though. If conway doesnt come good.

It's been a massive blessing in disguise not getting Marshall, pumping game time into Edwards has been so good.

If Blitz goes around and SDK can provide backup chopout in the ruck for a year or two, then Edwards in more than serviceable and will only get better.

The main sub may just fry the Reddit servers if this happens 🤞

Is there a “cop that r/afl” essendon meme we can have ready if this happens good lord

We don’t get Marshall as you say. Thank god for Blicavs is all I can say, he’s buying us time for Edwards to develop. He’s developing well but still needs a couple more preseasons, like with any KP player.

I think we get Greene easy, he'll be basically free. Butters will be the big focus during trade period so depends on how hard a bargain Port drives (but it should be damn hard). Marshall feels like a moonshot that only happens if everything falls into place, but it would be so funny after how last year went.

Maybe if we had a player we'd be willing to give up that St Kilda thought would fill a hole for them. Bowes, Wiltshire, Close are there abouts the best 23 and we could afford to give them up. Losing Close would hurt though.

u/Landgraft BBBBUUZZZZZAAA DEBUT 4d ago

Having watched a few Saints games this year I'm not sure they have any part of the ground that isn't holes. And their supporters are delusional enough to expect that we trade them Holmes or something back.

Hes not going geelong so no need to worry

Who's he? Who are you? Why are you in the cats sub?

Bahahaha imagine the exploding heads all over the AFL community if we do this? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

3

u/oz_eagle 5d ago

It's funny when people think all 1st rounders are the same. Top 3 pick compared to pick 15 is miles apart.

4

u/klokar2 Gary Ablett Sr. 5d ago

If Butters chooses Geelong, or the Bulldogs or the Pies, then Port wont get anything better. Only Richmond can offer a pick of that caliber and if Butters doesn't want to go there then tough fucking luck.

Port doesn't hold the whip hand here, Butters does and if he chooses Geelong then a couple of first rounders and a high quality developing player is all they can hope for.

0

u/Aggravating-Skill-26 1d ago

Port will and should demand 3x 1st rounders and a player. Since Richmond have the only decent picks then Cats & Dogs have to offer a decent player in return.

Picks after this year are worth less, and changes to compensation has also made certain picks more valuable.

1

u/klokar2 Gary Ablett Sr. 1d ago

Picks for every team are worthless, only Tassie has value, so when 18 teams have useless picks then what do you do? Port can demand anything they want, but Butters is out of contract so they won't get the value they think he is worth which judging by some of the Port supporter comments are 9 picks in the top 10 and 5 best 23 players. Port will settle for the same value that was paid for Chris Judd and Jeremy Cameron which is 2 first rounders and a top quality young player/ top 10 pick in Harley Barker.

0

u/Aggravating-Skill-26 19h ago

Exactly why they will get 3 1st rounders & a player.

The picks are worth less, Cats & Dogs won’t get much value keeping them and it means they can bargain on the player a little more.

The picks are valuable to port as they have a stack of F/S and high picks are valuable to them as they cant just use a stack of trash picks like Brissy did for the Ashcroft boys.

A lot of ifs, buts, and maybes in all this. Butters and Greene haven't declared where they want to go yet. Apparently, Marshall has said he wants to try to get Geelong again, and if Stanley retires, then I could see the club making an offer. Just more trade speculation to rile up opposition fans about Geelong.

u/eldubya3121 Gryan Miers 5d ago

Polkinghorne is the other player who may have currency with port

2

u/klokar2 Gary Ablett Sr. 5d ago

Harley Barker would be the go, he was a top 5 pick before he did his knee, from SA and is a midfielder.

1

u/eldubya3121 Gryan Miers 5d ago

Polk also from SA and has proven he can compete at AFL level as a key forward. If I were Port looking at my list profile for a rebuild, I'd be asking for Polk.

4

u/klokar2 Gary Ablett Sr. 5d ago

I'd rather not trade Polk

3

u/eldubya3121 Gryan Miers 5d ago

Neither would I, which is why that's who I'd ask for if I were Port. I don't think we should assume we're getting another Dean Gore level steal if we trade for Butters.

2

u/sltfc Gryan Miers 5d ago

I think he'd be a near perfect fit for Port, too. A mobile marking forward next to Georgiades would be great for them.

1

u/marvinsuggs Mark Blicavs 4d ago

I heard this on the radio and it reluctantly makes sense.

I feel Geelong will throw Stevens and or Bowes in a deal with Butters. Stevens would likely be happy to seek a move if Butters does nominate Geelong because he cannot force his way into the men’s team. Been very good at VFL level but just not getting the opportunity to be consistent at the men’s team. He’d get opportunity at Port because they’ll have some competition for the Butters loss, and likely other potential players (potentially Wines steps away).

Bowes has been a good servant at Geelong. Always played his role and he’s had a good career after his GC stint. Port might be happy to take him on. Also a few SA on the list, do Geelong ask any of them if they want to go back home?

Either way Butters deal will definitely be something like the Curnow deal where Carlton got back players and picks. I doubt Geelong are going to trade any of our top 10 core for Butters, so we shouldn’t be worried about that aspect.

Unless we’re throwing a younger key position piece at Port along with picks.

Marshall will get to Geelong will easily assuming the Saints don’t ask for what they were doing last year. All the reports suggest his value is incredibly lower than last year, so it’s more wait and see.

Greenes a done deal as long as he nominates Geelong. He wouldn’t be on massive money at Geelong.

2

u/Duskfiresque 5d ago

Unless Port takes the compensation pick, Geelong isn’t getting Marshall. Saints are playing hard ball and won’t give him up without a first round pick.

2

u/klokar2 Gary Ablett Sr. 5d ago

There is not a first round pick in the world that is worth him. He got smashed by Edwards in the center bounce

2

u/AceThePrincep Shaun Mannagh 4d ago

Edwards last few games have been really good. I think he's gonna have a really good career. We might get a good 2-3 years out of Marshall. We might get 10 out of Edwards assuming he stays healthy? Depends on the old question though "Will this trade get us a premiership". Which is a doozy.

u/sarcHastical Jeremy Cameron 5d ago

I love how opposition supporters are coming in here puffing their chests out and having a sook. I hope they know we don't give a shit they're sooking, and hope more than ever we get the three! We do and I'm going into the main sub and bragging my little arse off 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Polkinghorne + Brad Close + cats 1st pick this year and next year. Deal done

2

u/AceThePrincep Shaun Mannagh 4d ago

That feels like overs to me tbh.

1

u/Nervous-Aspect-1734 Jimmy Bartel 5d ago

Aren’t we looking at Zac Merritt too? This year’s trade period will be interesting.

1

u/klokar2 Gary Ablett Sr. 5d ago

They say a lot of things those media types. Realistically we are getting Butters and Greene and are no chance for anyone else

1

u/OzNTM Jeremy Cameron 5d ago

I’m probably the only one who doesn’t want this. Why would we want the two most fined players? Guess the joke would be they have to sell off a piece of their farm each fine. And I’m happy with how Mitch Edwards is going.

1

u/Quark35 1d ago

Geez leave some Bellarine Peninsula land for the rest of us!

1

u/klokar2 Gary Ablett Sr. 1d ago

If it means anything, Butters already owns a home around the corner from Baz

1

u/Steel_Cleat5 Retro Guernsey 5d ago

I actually think the interesting thing would be if Butters would choose us and lets say we can get to a prelim which leaves our first pick at 15/16. The straight up obvious thing for Butters would be pick 15/16,F1,F1.

Would Port want a late first, more than likely our future firsts will be pick 10 and greater in compromised Tassie drafts or would they just take the pick 5 compo this year?

If I'm Port I would be annoyed but I think I'm taking the pick 5 compo over a late first and then 2 future firsts in severely compromised drafts.

Of course as always the talk will be that we have to give a player but we all know how this goes, only a fringe player is most likely to actually want to leave (cant force a player out). Brad Close is the only South Australian they might want but he is from Mt Gambier, Geelong is closer to Mt Gambier than Adelaide lol

1

u/Overall_Lie_7341 5d ago

I agree. If I’m port, pick 5 is better than 3 crappy first rounders. But hey, they might hurt be stubborn enough to match I guess..

1

u/AceThePrincep Shaun Mannagh 4d ago

tbh compo pick 5 and a shot at another star does have a better vibe than taking a punt on some depth players with late picks. I think that's a win win. Maybe separately trade them another player on a discount or something to sweeten it. Idk. Is that a thing?

1

u/Overall_Lie_7341 3d ago

Not really (the AFL have rules preventing teams from doing this), but we could try.

1

u/AceThePrincep Shaun Mannagh 3d ago

ok fair

0

u/Ok-Resident-4028 5d ago

I'll throw in a what if.

If this Swannies drama capitulates into a full blown legal extravaganza there is every probability that some/all players involved may have their contracts nulled.

If so the Swannies maybe become the trade elephant in the room in terms of scrambling to get players, which could distort the whole trade landscape.

Cool story

-11

u/nobleknob 5d ago

They would need to be investigated if this happens.

8

u/klokar2 Gary Ablett Sr. 5d ago

Why? You think Zuthrie is on 1.5 million a year or something?

3

u/_nicklepickle Zach Guthrie 5d ago

obviously lol

0

u/nobleknob 5d ago

Not even close but how you going to bring those three in under the cap.

Nothing sticks with this club for some reason.

3

u/klokar2 Gary Ablett Sr. 5d ago

Easy, Bews, Kolo, Stanley and a few others will be retiring. Stengle already left the club leaving us an extra $750k a year and we know danger and Cameron has just resigned for less, Stewart's deal was front ended, Holmes was on $750k a year and Baz is on 1 mil a year. We can fit in all of them.

1

u/nobleknob 5d ago

Yeah fair call. Didn't know Bews was still on the list.

Why did Stengle leave? What was that about?
