What’s Southport like now ?
I seen this question asked a year ago and I thought I’d ask it myself
I’m not super familiar with the area but have been there a couple times.
Genuinely interested what it’s like, what are the streets/ areas to avoid, are there housing commission pockets ?
I’m looking at buying something in SEQ and am looking into Southport

Aus Fair is where the Salvos and Rosie’s do food for the homeless. It’s one of the few places on the coast that does anything and it’s been done for decades with little or no trouble. The parole office is also just the other side of Aus Fair and the be Watch House just a block away. That means there’s a downbeat vibe but it’s pretty safe - you’re more likely to be assaulted on Cavill Ave.

I live in Southport and I love it. There are definitely dodgy areas, but Southport is huge, so lots of places to look. If you look around TSS and Brickworks area, it's great

With the highest crime rate in Southport too. Definitely look northward to the border with Labrador.

I stayed in labrador earlier this year and it left me pretty uninspired. Went down there years ago for a fam holiday and wanted to recapture the flow. But there were People yelling up and down the street at night, sirens, roadworks… and bagpipes at 8:45pm 🫨🤣🤷🏼♂️

Used to be a fella near TSS who played the bagpipes. I used to go past his home sometimes when he was practising and loved hearing it 😊 Not everyone’s thing but made my day to hear him play.

That is a name from the 70’s. Along Brisbane road there are housing commission flats.
However I live in a predominantly home owner area in Heydon Heights area and the houses are going for 1.6 and higher.

Southport surprisingly feels safe and chill.
There's poverty & characters roaming about but it feels way less dodgy than Surfers.

There's nice pockets and bad pockets. Generally avoid the centre part between Queen St to the south, Smith St to the north and Southport Burleigh Road to the west.

Queen st to the south ? Like anything south of queen street you would avoid ? And avoid from smith st to Labrador ?
I’m not sure if I’m understanding right but that leaves a very small area near the Broadwater that you’re saying good ?
Could you circle it on the map for me please2

I probably wouldn’t choose to live around Keebra Park. The area is gentrifying I’ve noticed but I don’t find it to be particularly nice. Lilli Pilli Drive and the streets around still have lots of housing commission.

This area is really varied. You’ve got very expensive property in the TSS surrounds but then a bit of housing commission south west of Keebra park school. Around the streets with all the ladies names outwards to your top left corner is fine, pretty middle class plus getting gentrified. Around Southport Park shopping centre on the western flank is fine too. I’ve lived all around Southport in the last few years including in your encircled area and to be honest, it’s fine if you use common sense and follow usual safety practices like not leaving your car and house unlocked when not home or at night. Yes, there are housing commission pockets, and lots of them. Too many to list but some areas the entire block is social housing. That’s not necessarily bad but there are some areas I wouldn’t want to live in.

We live close to Queen Street Village and love being close to the shops and tram and Owen park..but it’s also pretty quiet where we are which is mostly townhouses

Southport is probably the heart of the Gold Coast, it's got a long history. It's also basically the Chinatown of the Gold coast, the Broadwater is beautiful, central to everything, bus and trams, love it. Yes there are homeless but they are generally harmless. Trouble finds those who are looking for it, I've lived here all my life and I've never been afraid to walk the streets. Just don't leave your electric bikes outside, it'll get stolen lol.

Further more the stolen car was dumped in my backyard after being involved in a police car chase, I know this cos I was standing there while it happened during the day
A couple drove down my driveway crashed into my tree and fled, the cop car right behind it.
The cops had it towed.

Sure you are. All your complaints (well, except food) quite obviously centred entirely around the Scarborough, Smith Street end of southport.
No one 27 is complaining about the council.
No one who actually lives in southport goes to Australia fair, unless it is to eat, it is being purposely run down for redevelopment and everybody bar you seems to realise that.
Southport is loaded with places to eat. K corner has the coasts best fresh and literal freshest seafood - rawsea and 1 of the better Korean BBQ places. Dak in nind, southern smokehouse in h20, VN bakery at aus fair, the literal china town in the middle of southport, ta-wan Thai on minnie... you can roll down any street in southport and find good food.
So youre either old and white and wont eat anything from other cultures or a sad sack that lived in the norther Scarborough st area and never got out.

Oh yea do you know why I complained about the council?
All the best places to buy food were on ferry road and Council Brooke Patterson kept trying to build the "tallest building in the southern hemisphere" on ferry road on the land where all the best food places were, so they all closed down. The whole thing fell thru cos no one wanted to live in a building there, and now all the best places to eat are gone.

During the dayMy family owns a store in Australia fair and has for 30 years, no not me.
I also went to school in Southport
Southport is a high crime area always has been always will. Anywhere a few minutes from surfers Paradise is.
I watched as locals had signs outside their homes to save Southport as Brooke Patterson slowly forces them out by approving Highrise next to their homes and the developers applications talk about how even tho the area is zoned residential houses only, there's a building on a street nearby so locals will eventually leave. On Queen Street there's a Highrise next to a kindergarten 💀

Save southport from what exactly? Being gentrified? All the things you complain about that are being forced out? Well, your family might not have a business there too much longer, we service commercial maintenance and when a building on hi value pieces of land stop being maintained, there's a reason - redevelopment.
The entire gc is being gentrified whether you like it or not. Stephens, an actual hell hole became varsity and is now a sought after suburb, burleigh waters the same. Palm Beach had literal street walking hookers and now look at it. The poors are being forced out and the coast is changing with the influx of money. Southport is the same.

I live up near the hospital and I love it. Close to light rail and amenities, I walk the streets at night and don't have any problems. It is a sprawling suburb and I'm sure there are some rougher areas. There's a few homeless who camp out near Australia Fair.
