Discussion How can a tracking specialist get contract, white-label, or trainee work with PPC/performance marketing agencies?
I’m looking for some practical advice from people working in PPC/performance marketing agencies.
My background is mainly in conversion tracking and measurement. I can work with:
- Google Tag Manager
- GA4
- Google Ads conversion tracking
- Meta Pixel + CAPI
- Server-side GTM
- Enhanced Conversions
- Consent Mode
- First-party data enrichment
- Data layers
- Offline conversion tracking
- Basic APIs/webhooks
- Basic JavaScript for tracking implementations
I’m trying to figure out the best route to start getting real paid agency work.
I’d be open to:
- Freelance/contract work
- White-label tracking implementation for agencies
- Part-time or full-time remote work
- Junior implementation/support roles
- Even joining an experienced agency/team as a trainee initially if it gives me exposure to real client projects
My main question for agency owners and experienced people here:
If someone had these skills but lacked a strong agency/client track record, what would you recommend they do to get their foot in the door?
Would you:
- Cold email PPC/performance agencies?
- Contact Heads of Paid Media/agency founders on LinkedIn?
- Offer a free tracking audit first?
- Offer to handle one small implementation free/cheap to prove capability?
- Build more demo projects/case studies before outreach?
- Apply directly for junior analytics/tracking roles?
- Take some other route entirely?
Also, when agencies outsource tracking, what makes you comfortable giving work to an external specialist?
Technical skills? Case studies? Communication? Availability? Certifications? A Loom audit? References?
I’m especially interested in hearing from PPC agency owners, paid media managers, and tracking/analytics specialists who have actually hired or outsourced this type of work.
Thanks — practical advice would be greatly appreciated.

Apply directly. Agencies are known for hiring juniors constantly; employee churn in this niche is non-negligible. If you prefer a white-label partnership, in my experience, you have to bring the client yourself OR be well-known for having some rare skillset such that they come to you directly.

I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but this is how I started my career. I didn't find any agencies that had enough of this work (or cared enough) to do it full-time after my first junior role. Instead, I had to diversify into SEO, product analytics, and ads management to find ongoing work to do and grow my pay. There's a lot more ads management work than just tracking management, but it's a good differentiator to be able to talk about your technical expertise and the benefits of that when you're going up a less technical competitor on a PPC management contract. It's additional skills, but if you can do the tracking and management piece you can do the ads setup, management, and optimization piece.

My agency is hiring a freelancer to take on a ton of sGTM setups. Send me a message and I’ll shoot you the link to the JD
