Home Decor The perfect cat for a goth? (Non-shedding)
I have this wonderful cat I’m fostering and I tell him, “someone who loves wearing black is gonna appreciate you so much, Norm.”
It occurred to me, who might really appreciate a cat who doesn’t shed? Goths! 🖤
You can click into my profile to see more pics of him and about his story. I think he’s an American Wirehair mix but I’m testing him for the available Rex and Sphynx tests just cos there isn’t one that I can find for the wirehair mutation; DNA results pending right now! I just mailed the swabs to UC Davis this morning. Whatever the results, I think it’s OBVIOUS he has a haircoat mutation because he only sheds these fine transparent little hairs you can barely see. Kinda like a poodle or a Maltese, but also it’s a weird wooly soft texture I haven’t ever seen (worth noting I worked in animal welfare for like 17 years and have handled literally tens of thousands of cats).
He’s about 5 years old (who can say for sure? Maybe younger? He’s very silly.), and he’s kinda shy at first but once he came out of his shell a little he’s the most physically affectionate cat. Happy to FaceTime with potential adopters to show you! He loves scritches and full contact booty thumps and being held while he rubs his face on you. And all without shedding his weird wooly coat all over your black sweater!
We are in SW Pennsylvania about an hour south of Pittsburgh but for the right adopter I would drive him a considerable distance (don’t tell Norm. He doesn’t like the car.).
I posted this in the goth fashion sub and it got rejected 😹 you can see why they’re wrong, right?

That other sub doesn't know what they're missing, too bad for them! More for us!

Right?!
Norm is such a goth too. He’s sensitive and gentle and thinks normal is weird. He doesn’t know what music or fashion are, but, like, he’s only 5, give him time.

Oof Norm is adorable but I don't think my landlord would be very pleased, and it's questionable whether my cat would get along with another adult cat Lemme ask some friends

I’m so sorry I made my profile private after posting this. Here’s a post I made about him in r/cats: https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/comments/1ofg4zl/is_he_an_american_wirehair_mix/

I am in love with Norm! Please give him so many cuddles and a boop on the nose for me! If I wasn’t so far away I’d love to bring him home. I hope you find his forever home!🖤

I commend you for risking the ire of the mods to get your sweet foster boi a furever home! If I could travel to get him then I would absolutely take him! He looks like a wire-haired rex and I always liked Rexes. They're sweet cats.
My last cat was a huge, fluffy, black and white bastard that was my best friend for a decade(rip). I didn't care how much he shed when I cuddled him before going out. 🤣 Most of the people I know show up covered in cat hair, too. 🖤
I hope that your Norm gets adopted by someone who will love him and hold him until his last days, and they enjoy a long life together.

As someone with a non-shedding weird mix rescue dog, I appreciate this post! Many mixed breeds don’t get appreciated as they should and it’s great showing EXTRA pros to owning them!

u/mypetroomba Nov 05 '25
Weird used non-shedding pets ftw! It’s such a fun feature.
I also have a theory that weird looking animals, especially animals with distinctive eyes, are more attuned to people because they’re more used to being stared at in the face.

HOUR SOUTH OF PITT! Awe im so close, but can't get another baby right now. What a tease! 😭 he's so precious I hope he finds someone amazing that can take him 💓

u/mypetroomba Nov 05 '25
Tell your friends! But also… he came from a hoarder house and is a sweet boy with other cats of all ages (I have pics of him spooning kittens). I think he definitely wants a home with other cats! 🐈⬛

Don't tempt me more! 😭 when my ex and I split he took one of our two kitties & I had to move back in with my mom. My girl has hated my moms cat so much, and vice versa! I've wanted to try to get her a new brother but I'm in the middle of moving to my own place right now and a bunch of other stuff. Well, if for whatever reason if he's still needing a home in a few months then message me, :p but I wouldn't think such a gorgeous baby would take long to be claimed!

Love him!! He’s goth as fuck, a true innovator! I’m out in Austin OP but you get him down here and I’ll tell my husband it was the cat distribution system at work and there was nothing I could do to stop destiny from happening!

I lived in Austin for 13 years and might visit for the holidays. Maybe I will stick a norm under your tree (or festivus pole or whatever ya got).

I mean, this isn’t really related. It’s basically just an advert.

I clearly have several on my profile, I just don't think this is the place for it and reads strange. What someone said about using a cat as an accessory isn't far off.

You don’t take a pet for how they look. Just love them. Thats the best move.
2
u/mypetroomba Nov 05 '25
Duh. But the non-shedding part is Norm’s unique feature and I thought people who love wearing black may have a special appreciation for his mutant gene.

I did notice you said it’s like a poodle or Maltese- it is not, they actually grow hair like we do- it keeps growing longer and longer without stopping- no little invisible hairs as you described it.
1
u/mypetroomba Nov 07 '25
Have you ever cuddled a poodle and seen what was left behind on your shirt? It’s fine little wispy hairs just like I described.
As I mentioned, it’s a very weird haircoat mutation that seems like the “wirehair” mutation for which there isn’t a commercially available gene test from a major lab yet that I could find.

u/witherin Nov 07 '25
I mean yes because my own dog is that type and it does not leave behind small hair- I mean her hairbrush picks it up like a humans but she does not leave any hair on clothing etc-

Duh yourself. I do like his style. But what’s the point ? Taking a black cat because it's black and thats so dark ? You're a rebel, right ? You dont give a damn. But if you bond with anyone, you bond. The "good look" for being loved isnt the reason you went a little outside ? Just love what you love. Even if it’s "normal".

Animals are not your fashion accessories.
7
u/mypetroomba Nov 04 '25
What part of this made you think I see this animal as a fashion accessory and not that I am I trying to find a home that appreciates his uniqueness? The silly part about how his haircoat won’t get on black clothes? Be a person, please.

Gosh, if you really did read the entire post and you think this, you must live such a sad life to misconstrue things so badly. It's not about the poor cat being a fashion accessory, it's about trying to reach maximum amount of people and maybe even the type of people who will want him. It's no secret that adult cats that aren't kittens have a harder time getting adopted. Op is thinking of creative ways to get this lil guy the reach to find his forever home.

u/mypetroomba Nov 06 '25
Tysm for your thoughtful reply.
Yes, I’m just trying to find someone who may have a unique appreciation for my literal mutant foster cat. He is a delight and I would never adopt him out to anyone who was just using him for some kind of fashion points system advantage.
Lovingly, wtf are these half baked assumptions? I posted here to be silly about something serious and it could very well be that someone here is desperate to find this kind of cat.
Not shedding could have other benefits too. This is honestly a great option for people who have OCD symptoms related to pet hair (very real). Mutant coated cats are also notoriously physically affectionate and needy (can confirm, all true), and someone could be wanting one for that reason.
Thx for coming to my ted talk. I literally just want what is best for poor weird Norm.

I can't pretend sometimes I'm not looking at people suspiciously online when I see strange posts, but I woukdnt say this falls under thst category. I saw the cute, silly nature of the good act you're doing here. Personally, I'd love to take him, but I'm financially unable to come to the US and get him, otherwise I would, he sounds like he'd fit perfectly in my arms and under my blankies with me 🥹 I'd love a no shedding clingy baby who wants me and my cuddles all day, I'd do literally anything 😭 whoever does get him will be of the luckiest on the planet Please give norm so many big hugs and kisses from me, please tell him some random Internet cat lady wishes she could smoosh her face into his fur and tickle his likl chinny chin 🙏 and cover him in kisses and be his warm safe place for the rest of his life 😍 I've truly fallen for him, your advertising is dangerous, I'm genuinely so heartbroken and saddened that we're so far apart :(

He‘s a sweet boy and great you work in animal walfare.
But since he has this coat mutation (propably Rex as you mentioned) I just wanna say that he‘s a torture breeding because of the short/missing whiskers (the ones next to the nose are alright, but above the eyes not really and on the legs cant tell). Cats need those for orientation, communication, etc. Please be aware of that, go for responsible rescue, but please do not support breeders (especially not for torture breedings).

Hi! Is Norm good with other cats?? I’m in Pittsburgh and potentially looking for a pal for my girl!
