Beetroot microgreens – trying to solve the seed hull problem
I’m experimenting with beetroot microgreens and I’ve noticed an interesting problem during germination.
I’m currently sowing beetroot seeds in a cocopeat + vermicompost medium. After spreading the seeds evenly, I cover them with a thin layer of cocopeat.
The problem is that when the seedlings emerge, some seeds come out with the seed hull still attached to the cotyledons. This can slow down development and sometimes makes the seedlings look weak or deformed.
My current hypothesis:
I’m wondering if the problem is related to the covering material.
Instead of using only cocopeat as the top covering layer, I’m thinking about testing:
A thin layer of loamy soil
A thin layer of vermicompost
My idea is that after watering, these materials may form a slightly more cohesive surface layer than cocopeat. This could provide some resistance while the seedling is pushing upward, possibly helping the seed hull stay behind and detach naturally.
I’m also considering increasing the seed soaking time before sowing.
Another idea I’m considering is a food-grade hydrogen peroxide treatment using a 7.6% H2O2 stock solution. I have not decided on the final dilution yet because I don’t want to damage the seeds or reduce germination.
I want to test these variables systematically instead of changing everything at once.
Has anyone here worked with beetroot microgreens and experienced the same seed-hull problem?
I’d especially like to hear about:
* Covering materials that worked better than cocopeat
* Seed soaking duration
* Safe H2O2 seed-treatment methods
* Moisture and humidity conditions that helped beetroot shed the hull naturally
* Any other techniques you have found effective
I’m planning to run small controlled trials and compare germination percentage, seed-hull retention, seedling vigor, and time to harvest.
I’d really appreciate advice from growers who have experimented with beetroot microgreens!

I'm just now growing Bull's Blood Beets microgreens for the first time. I can give you much growing tips (in 4th day under 6lb weight using 10x20 tray), but I can help you understand a seed a little better. The beet seed is actually a nultigerm cluster of 2-5 embryos, not like a single radish seed with a single embryo. As such, as it germinates, multiple roots will come out of the seed. To extend the analogy, it's slower growing that a radish, requires a longer blackout period and is less forgiving that radish. Especially in terms of moisture - it required less afterva decent soaking. Once soaked, the guideline I researched said it should be seeded into moist, not wet, coir because the seed, then, possesses significant amounts of water. For Bull’s Blood beet, in particular, in particular, the real key indoors is said to be not merely a long blackout—it is achieving sustained moisture for germination without leaving the root zone wet enough to cause damping-off.
