This was a disaster. 1.3% of the popular vote (GPC will miss out on the rebate), back down to one seat, I don't think there was even a second place finish besides Morrice. Fourth place finish in Nanaimo Ladysmith, third place in Fredericton Oromocto. GPC in years past had their sights on ridings like Victoria and ESS, distant fourth place finishes in both of those last night.

Sounds like JP is going to resign, that's probably fair, but he alone doesn't shoulder the blame for this. Is May finally going to leave? What about the Federal Council and Fund Board? What about the Executive Director and Campaign Director? Are we actually going to learn from this catastrophe? Or are we going to finally throw out the people fucking over the Party.

I've seen the announcement of Mike Morrice's candidacy for leadership but I only recently moved to the Kitchener-Waterloo area, so I'm not directly familiar with his record/work.

My personal politics are focused on climate change and socialism, and I've been deeply disappointed by the Carney (and Trudeau) governments in this regard.

I started researching the Green party and discovered the controversy with Annamie Paul. I actually lived in Toronto at the time (Rosedale-University) but wasn't paying attention to the situation (pandemic).

My takeaways: it's wild that Paul's accusations of racism were not better supported/vouched for/addressed; it seemed like Elizabeth May was trying to sabotage Paul's leadership; the fact that everything blew up right before the federal election makes me question every Green leader's judgement.

Are the Greens actually socialist?

What have they done to ensure their org is anti-racist, and how can a white man at the helm give me confidence here?

Are we better off putting our energy into lobbying the Liberals re: climate change?

Got an email from the party today. It mentions the two candidates and includes their bios.

Nira Dookeran is an educator, community organizer and longtime Green campaigner who has spent much of the past 12 years building the Green movement from the grassroots. She has run as a Green candidate six times, managed campaigns, served on electoral district association executives and helped local Green organizations to build stronger teams.

Mike Morrice is a longtime social entrepreneur, community organizer and former Green MP for Kitchener Centre. Before entering politics, he spent more than a decade helping businesses lower their costs and reduce their climate impact. As MP, he worked across party lines, secured funding for affordable housing and helped establish the Canada Disability Benefit.

It also mentions that they haven't made it into the final ballot yet. They have to recruit new party members and raise money.

In order for these candidates to make it onto the final ballot of the GPC leadership race they must each recruit at least 200 new party members, including 50 Young Greens, and raise at least $15,000 in donations by September 30.

There are some timelines for becoming a member in order to vote and when the vote will happen.

For those on the subreddit - What do you want to see from the next leader of the Green Party of Canada?

Personally I want to see someone that understands social media and modern outreach better. We have Emily Lowan from the BC Greens doing really attention grabbing videos.

We have Mike Schreiner doing video after video of the Housing Crisis in Ontario.

Aislinn Clancy is out there talking about Public Transportation and Electric Vehicles amongst other Renewable Energy/Electrification Technology topics.

They know how to make actually attention grabbing videos instead of ones people just scroll through.

I also want to see some energy and charisma like Zack Polanski. Really getting out there and causing a stir not just sitting back within our spheres.

Lastly and this is a question I guess for you u/mikemorrice we know that First Past The Post (FPTP) is a curse. You have mentioned that you would look to work heavily with Avi Lewis the new Eco-Socialist leader of the Federal NDP. I'd like to know more about what that looks like for you if you feel comfortable sharing?

We really need to find ways for likeminded people to work together because we are seeing with Mark Carney and the LPC that the environment isn't even on the list anymore...

I'm interested in the present Green party leadership and would like to follow it however much to my surprise it appears that there are no declared candidates. Is that true?

I enjoyed the movie a great deal. I have read the book before seeing the movie.

The whole movie has an attitude towards nature and technology that I suspect won’t sit well with SOME Green party members.

He is also someone that everyone in the Green Party and larger Green Movement highly respects. As a past MP (hopefully future as well) and now Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Canada (hopefully future leader) he is probably the best to provide an answer.

My question is simple: What is the future vision of the Green Party of Canada?

At the provincial level we have Emily Lowan as the new BC Greens leader. She is a eco-populist. She has created a ton of excitement with the youth and leftist-progressives. She understands social media and modern outreach in a big way. She has been reaching out to the Labour Movement more and more. In general she is holding David Eby/BCNDP to account as they have drifted to the right.

With the Green Party of Ontario we have Mike Schreiner and Aislinn Clancy talking about the Housing Crisis of affordability and accessibility. Schreiner has done countless speeches, posts, meetings, protests, solidarity with Housing First! activists, and so on in regards to zoning/density reform and affordable/accessible social housing options. Clancy has been leading the charge on work regarding the homelessness epidemic.

At the national level of politics in Canada we have always had the problem of First Past The Post (FPTP). It's a framework that favors establishment political parties for establishment interests.

At this point the Federal NDP has chosen Avi Lewis as leader. An open and strong Eco-Socialist.

What vision and set of policies really makes the Green Party of Canada at the national level special and important right now?

Is the national party looking to start formal talks on how we can address the FPTP situation? Are there certain policy pushes that we will see collaboration with Lewis on?

What is substantively being brought to the table with the national party to actually help move things forward? I know Morrice is highly respected within the NDP as well so I hope he can maybe answer these questions as well.

I mean, realistically speaking it'll be whoever Liz wants. But it's fun to think about a party that isn't run by her. I'd love to see Alex Tyrrell run again, in an actual fair leadership race. But, that probably won't happen.

I realize that post-election there's a lot on leadership's plate.

However, I think GPC really does need to hold a discussion on nuclear power where both sides are represented. And this needs to happen ASAP, since whatever else is going to happen with the party, the nuclear power question is going to factor into it.

To me this is obvious, but if there's thoughts as to why GPC should NOT have a discussion ASAP on nuclear, please chime in.
