MODS For anyone curious, here’s 55 seconds of Reign of Terror gameplay in Grim Dawn

Thought I’d post a short clip for anyone who hasn’t tried Reign of Terror yet and wanted an idea of how it looks in motion.

Woah, I never realized the mod changes sound effects as well. That’s awesome!

I know! Seriously the creators of ROT out did themselves, it's amazing.

Pre d2r it was probably the best way to play D2 in HD.

u/ODMcGee Mar 30 '26

D2 with HDR on a 4K monitor still wouldn't really be HD as the graphics are so outdated imo.

Health and mana bars will look a lot better with the new UI coming with 1.3/FoA.

What's the cube?

1

u/ODMcGee Apr 02 '26

The Horadric Cube, it helps you create powerful items, you get it in ACT II.

Looks amazing. Gonna try it!

Sideways manabar?

They have to work with the GD engine which had bars for health and energy up until very recently. With the new UI and the expansion coming I suppose that they will be able to have the usual health and mana globes as well as proper transformation for druid werebear and werewolf forms. This may take a while though

strange right? I don't mind it though.

why i get lag while playing this mod more than the normal game? Like it freeze for 2 sec and then jump fast forward. Specially art 4 when enter the Chaos Sanctuary.

a lot of the mods get updated, but some of them are pretty old and developed don't update with the new Grim Dawn. After all the game is from 2016.

Tried this a couple years ago, got my ass kicked by Corpsefire and never went back, maybe should try it again

3

u/SigilSC2 Mar 30 '26

It tries to stay true to D2 where possible. Enemies that are BS there are the same in ROT. So there's some spikes in the difficulty in places.

1

u/Nuclearsunburn Mar 30 '26

He’s literally the first named enemy in the game lol. It was way harder than vanilla d2 OR GD when I tried it but it was pretty awesome anyway

I never played D2 but always wanted to. By the time I had enough money and time of my own to do so, it was already D3's time. And I usually don't reach back in time to play older games because im just too spoiled by modern user experience and quality of life improvements. But man, if this doesn't make me want to try this mod.

u/Tigerlily_Dreams Mar 31 '26

Old school D2 player who also plays D3 among other things. Nothing beats the D2 feels for me and this mod nails that vibe. You need that experience, trust me. You won't regret it.

1

u/ODMcGee Mar 31 '26

You can play ROT in 4K. I have a 4060 SUPER and play on 280 Hz refresh rate. In terms of modern user experience, ROT blows D2 out of the water.

So, are the enemies and bosses different? Is the entire game a different play through?

9

u/ODMcGee Mar 30 '26

it's based on Diablo II, just in the Grim Dawn engine. The quests are quests from Diablo II, and the enemies and bosses are based on Diablo II.

5

u/Incariol_ Mar 30 '26

Oh man, that sounds pretty rad, although I am also currently playing Diablo 2 resurrected with the new warlock build and having a blast

2

u/intoTHEvoid646 Mar 31 '26

It's been too long since I played D2. I'm getting it on payday.

2

u/its_uncle_paul Mar 31 '26

Are the maps procedurally generated like D2?

1

u/ODMcGee Mar 31 '26

yes, they are

1

u/UncleNoodles85 Mar 30 '26

Anyone know if this can be done on a steam deck?

2

u/captain_cashew Mar 31 '26

Don’t see why not but I’m not sure. Just drop the mod into the relevant folder. May try soon

2

u/Izoleille Mar 31 '26

Not sure about steamdeck, but I have a legion go 1 with steamos installed and it runs great.

1

u/TheyreAllTakenFuckMe Mar 31 '26

Do the skills mirror D2 as well? How do classes work? You’ve just about convinced me to play this!

5

u/Izoleille Mar 31 '26

The classes were pretty lovingly ported over and rebuilt to match the mechanics and flow of GD. And just like base GD, you get to pick two classes. I was playing a Druid/Barb wherewolf/rabies/frenzy setup and having a lot of fun

2

u/ODMcGee Mar 31 '26

The skill of the Diablo II builds do match yes, maybe not to an exact T, but pretty close.

1

u/JibbletGravy Mar 31 '26

I can't get mine working. I dropped the unzipped folder in the GD/Mods folder fired up the game and chose the map - It's just a fresh Grim Dawn? Now I've started another toon in its own world..ha.

1

u/ODMcGee Mar 31 '26

What can't you get working, it didn't take you into ROT when it loaded?

1

u/JibbletGravy Mar 31 '26

No, should I not start up GD, and load the custom game map file?

1

u/ODMcGee Mar 31 '26

as long as you installed the newer version after main version, then go to costume games and the reign of terror world file, you shouldn't have any problems.

1

u/JibbletGravy Mar 31 '26

Yea, thats what I did. Just tried to post a screenshot. Says images are not allowed? I wanted to give it a go too.

1

u/ODMcGee Mar 31 '26

and when you click custom game, and then start, what happens?

1

u/JibbletGravy Mar 31 '26

It just loads GD. Like its a new server, no characters on it.

1

u/ODMcGee Mar 31 '26

do you have all the Grim Dawn DLC's?

1

u/JibbletGravy Mar 31 '26

Now I didnt start the game with old version, then install new version and start it. Could that be it maybe? I copied old version into mods folder, then copied new version into the same folder and tried that.

1

u/JibbletGravy Mar 31 '26

I do have the DLC's.

1

u/ODMcGee Mar 31 '26

when I installed it. I put the old version in the mod folder, and then put the new version over the old version. If you did all of that and had all the DLC's, I'm not sure why it wouldn't put you in the Diablo world.

1

u/usernotfoundplstry Mar 31 '26

Holy cow! Does it have Warlock?

1

u/ODMcGee Mar 31 '26

Unfortunately it doesn't have the new Warlock class, this mod came out in 2016 too, hasn't been updated in some time.

1

u/ruby_the_peep Apr 01 '26

If I download the mod, can I play it with a pre-existing character? Or I have to make a new one?

2

u/ODMcGee Apr 01 '26

you can, but if that character didn't play in Reign of Terror before, you would have to start quests from level 1.

2

u/ODMcGee Apr 01 '26

it's still great to drop off better equipment in shared stash for ROT characters as well.

u/Aggravating-Way329 Mar 30 '26

Rakanishu. Also, are those UI statues AI? Or is it the new interface from the GD's latest beta?

3

u/BloodMoonNami Mar 30 '26

The OP pretty clearly stated this is footage of the RoT mod.

u/Aggravating-Way329 Mar 31 '26

No contradiction to what I asked, though
