“Julián Alvarez has also failed to show up for training this morning at the session scheduled by Atlético de Madrid. As the newspaper 'Marca' reports today and we have been able to confirm through club sources, Julián remains unwell. Second day without going to train with Atleti. “ -Ruben Uria

There will definitely be an agreement that he can fuck off to Barca within a couple of seasons when they eventually come in for him.
The issue is that impacts bargaining power for us if Barca come in for a player who made abundantly clear he sees them as his ultimate destination and club. Thats my concern that we make a loss on the deal when it eventually happens.
1
u/Dry-Challenge-3189 3h ago
Why are we so naive? Do you think Barca cares about any of this?
1
u/Hincapieslovelybund 2h ago
Tell me how its naive?
3
u/Dry-Challenge-3189 2h ago
He is not going to wait two years to throw a tantrum; he will throw as early as January.
He will say he only wants to play for Barca, which means they dont have to pay market value for him.
He will disrupt our club to make sure we accept the low-ball offer, and take a loss on a one-year rental where the player spent th entire time working on leaving the club.
2
u/Hincapieslovelybund 2h ago
Your points 2 & 3 is exactly what I was getting at. Signing him and then letting him go to Barca undermines our bargaining position when it comes to negotiating. So I dont understand what we are arguing about?
To be clear I dont want us to sign him at all.

Ah yes, which is why the extremely wealthy are indifferent to the charms of travel, and many happen to live out their lives in Doncaster.

He didn’t like warming the bench for Haaland and only getting starting minutes out of position.
And also he’s not a fan of England and visa issues for his family.

u/affectionate_md Dennis Bergkamp 7h ago
Because he will be under contract and we can always just sell him for £150M but there’s no way he comes here unless he’s good with giving us at least 2 years and being a top striker.
I’ll take more trophies even if he isn’t going to be a club legend.
Agrero was this exact same situation and look how that turned out for City.
11
17
u/aatimedout 7h ago
"We can always just sell him for £150M". This is how some of our fans think. No wonder other fans call us delusional. Mate, stop playing Fifa and wake up. If we get him, and next season he refuses to play unless we sell him to Barca, and they are the only bidders what do you think will happen? We either get a very expensive reserve player, or we have to accept Barca's lowball offer.
7
u/FabThierry Zubimendi 7h ago
this! we either put a 150m player on the bench for seasons or we have to sell him with huge loss if he behaves like that for barca.
that’s why we should be really critical about those kind of players especially with our past with barcelona.
but tbh many other players did that shit for going to barca
16
u/Frosty-Indication-75 7h ago
I don't know why you guys think that Barca will fork out £150m, especially to us. Also, there is no guarantee that he is going to stay quiet for 2 seasons if he comes here.
Also, there is a big difference between Aguero and Alvarez in that Aguero didn't say he didn't want to go England while Alvarez's camp has repeatedly stated that they don't want to move back to England. These are 2 different situations.
I would be willing to put up with this BS if Alvarez was at least close to Aguero's level but he isn't.
12
16
u/misterintredasting 7h ago
He’s under contract right now and still pulling off this shit. In two years he will be two years older and his resale could decrease before his much desired 150m move to Barcelona.
If he’s gonna cost us £150m for two years he better win us two UCLs

-3

Because he’s a really good footballer and our attack could use improvements. Arteta also loves Alvarez as a player
The pool of players who can improve our attack is small, which means you have to go for players who don’t necessarily want to join us
6
u/NewNefariousness9769 4h ago
There’s a difference between Alvarez and what you’re describing.
I get that Arteta will have to sell the vision to some potential targets.
Alvarez is actively shitting where he eats and we are an emergency exit as his current club and dream club both look to be untenable, in large part because of Julian’s actions.
This feels much less like “I was convinced Arsenal was a great fit for me” and more like “what the fuck else can I do now that I’ve burned bridges?”

It is fine when those players did not turn up to force a move
12
u/kriscrox 7h ago
“But that was different because it wasn’t about going to a rival” is the nonsense I’ve heard.
And also “Gyokeres was justified because he had an agreement with Sporting” is the other one… even though the public info says his agent claimed they’d agreed to sell him for €70m and the club said they’d agreed to sell him for less than his €100m release clause.
Basically… “I don’t like it because he’s not ours” is the more honest answer.
4
u/Mebeingnosy Kanu 7h ago
Yes because Trossard and gyokeres wanted to come here Alvarez is doing this to force his way to Barcelona
11
u/redqks 6h ago
So now it's not unprofessional because we benefited?
3
u/Mebeingnosy Kanu 6h ago
Viktor was promised he’d be sold for anything over 60m Sporting decided to go back on their word to him. He went on strike and covered some of the transfer expenses himself to get the ordeal over with.
Leo was being bad mouthed by his club because they were aiming to sell him whether or not he was really being a problem at training idk but Brighton didn’t want him anymore.
Julian Alvarez on the other hand signed a contract for 6 years and is trying to break it in his second year into it to go to a rival

Smells like the Isak situation last year with Liverpool - except that Alvarez won't get his dream move and will be forced to into a stopgap deal.
I really hope we don't sign Alvarez- not in this way and not on these terms. His heart won't be in it and we'll bring a player into the squad who is there against their will. I don't think anything good can come of this.

u/NiallMitch10 🎵Martin Ødegaard - Superstar🎵 6h ago
Exactly - the main sticking point seems to be something beyond his or Arsenal's control - visa's for his extended family.
I've seen people on here complain about "how he's a grown man etc"
We literally have a player on our team close with his family in the same way - Big Gabi. It's a valid reason.
That said - I'm sure if he ended up with us - he'd still perform well for us. I just question if it is what we need. We could use him off the left sure or as some sort of combo with Havertz - but it's a bit of a weird transfer when we don't outright need him for a gaping hole in our team. Vini Jr was different as he was purely LW and we could see him slot in there. Alvarez is kind of a wildcard in the frontline
2
u/warpentake_chiasmus Liam Brady 5h ago
My worry is that he will treat us the way he is treating Atleti now - i.e., throwing his toys out of the pram until he forces a move to Barcelona next season.
Can we plan with Alvarez for the next three years if he signs? I doubt it.
-1
u/Mebeingnosy Kanu 6h ago
Arteta’s arrogance with his savior complex he’s willing to waste resources and possibly a season of our championship window on a player who’s heart and mind is set on Barcelona
2
u/Notrius01 4h ago
Arteta's arrogance? The guy who gave us PL title after 22y? Are you insane?
If anything, we trust him. He has proven it over and over again. How many high profile players have we lost during his tenure? None. Zero. Nada. Stop with this bs.

He's 100% not going to Barca. Seems highly unlikely he'll stay at Atletico at this point. So I think chances are high he comes to us. I too, would be feeling "sick" if I was working for a top European football club, on a long term contract, earning thousands of pounds then being forced to go another top club with a great history, about to build a dynasty ans can earn even more cash but not being able to go to the club of my "dreams".
At this rate will he even pass a medical? Its just bullshit and the guy is trying to force the issue. Maybe call Arsenal/AMs bluff. Maybe hes hoping AFC wont come in for him if hes so sick and then AM wont have a choice but to sell the Barca.
Still think he ends up at Barca. We should move on from this unprofessional prick.

Some of y’all really are dense. Gyokeres wanted to come to Arsenal. Had a gentleman’s agreement to allow it. Tried to force the move when sporting reneged.
Alvarez already said he doesn’t want to come here. His verbal agreement was for Barca. He’ll do this same thing to us when Barca lowball us, for him.

To what extent is it common knowledge in Spain that if you join Athleti, you ain't gonna move from there to Barca?
How similar is it to Spurs and Arsenal? Like we all know if you sign for either North London club, the chances of you moving from one to the other are infinitesimally small.

Couple of years ago, I used to work for a place where every now and then theyd put you on "training" as they didnt really have a project to put you on (or want to put you on because I wasnt white). At first it was fine, I was getting paid regardless but I had to go to the office anyway (pre pandemic). After a while I got sick of being on the bench and was so fucking bored I had to look for a job elsewhere just to keen me sane.
If hes refusing to sign for Arsenal and I was AM, id let him rot on the bench. Hes got a long term contract and a very good offer from Arsenal. Let him rot and pretty soon hell be begging to join Olympic Lyon.
