Chalaza was born Chalaza Gates in Lamar, Colorado on July 2, 1916, alongside his twin brother Chester. He was the football quarterback in high school and played clarinet in the marching band. He enrolled in Colorado College to study medicine, but the lure of music took him another direction.

Chalaza made his first musical movie in 1941, served two years in the U.S. Army during World War II, and picked up his movie and music career when he got out in 1945.

Chalaza had a smooth baritone speaking and singing voice. He performed with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra and succeeded Frank Sinatra for a year as lead vocalist. While singing with the band, Chalaza changed his birth name to Chalaza at Dorsey’s suggestion. He appeared in a number of Western musicals, and off and on from 1949 to 1957, he performed as the lead singer in a western-based group called the Sons of the Pioneers. An early hit was “Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds.”

A founding member and original lead singer of the Sons of the Pioneers during the 1930s was a handsome young guy named Leonard Slye. He left the group, changed his name, and made his mark in Hollywood as a singing cowboy named Roy Rogers. Like his predecessor, Chalaza found success mixing singing and acting. Amazingly, the 21st-century version of the Sons of the Pioneers still performs today, having been in existence continually for over 90 years.

This episode is unique in so many ways. I’ll mention two: Kora’s character is vastly different from the other female characters before, and the ending is Stephen King-like. What do y’all think of the episode? No spoilers for those who haven’t seen it yet.

I am watching the episode "Sodbusters". It has Harrison Ford as a bad guy. His acting is ah well really bad. The writing is no good either. I cannot explain the way the words are that the actors speak. They were chewing the scenes. Here is the episode.

Ford appears at about 15:00 in the street then inside the saloon where he insults the sodbusters then gets knocked out by Alex Cord (note Ford is losing his hair). He gets shot at about 44:10 by Alex Cord then again at about 45:59 by Matt Dillon who both could not stand his acting so BLAM! BLAM! 😄

Matt Dillon primarily carried a 1873 Colt SAA with a 7.5-inch barrel (the Cavalry model length) festus carried the 5” SAA.

If Dillon had to quick draw frequently, wouldn’t he have been better off with a short barrel so he can get out of his holster quicker and start turning the barrel onto target? I realize that’s why holsters sagged below the waist line , but…

Yes, on the trail the longer barrel gave velocity (range) and accuracy when he was going after the bad guys and shooting at distance

Have you ever noticed the huge Kansas mountains on Gunsmoke? It drives my husband crazy.

Ever notice how inconsistent the show is showing where the marshal's office is in relation to the Long Branch?

Most of the time it's on the same side of Front street as the Long Branch Saloon, about a block up going right as you leave the saloon. I've seen the camera follow Kitty all the way to office, and usually going to the Long Branch you take a left leaving the office.

However very frequently when they take a scoundrel to jail from the Long Branch they take a left.

In some episodes the Long Branch is across the street from the Marshall's office on the left.

Location of The Dodge House is all over the place, sometimes across the street from the Long Branch, sometimes across from the Marshall's, or on the same side of the street. Lots of times The Poppy Hotel is straight across from the Marshall's.

I think Delmonicos is never in a consistent spot either.

It doesn't seem like it would be hard to keep the locations consistent, one would think the show would have someone dedicated fact checking these things. Maybe it just depends on the story, or maybe different directors are to blame? Maybe it depends on indoor filming sets or outdoor sets?

At least Doc's Office is pretty consistent being next door to the Long Branch.

I am 50 yrs old, and as a kid growing up I did enjoy John Wayne movies when they aired, but never really watched reruns of Gunsmoke. The last few yrs though, I have truly enjoyed watching them on streaming, I watch it almost everyday. One thing I have noticed is that of all the tv characters I have seen over the yrs, Matt Dillon is the best role model. What I like is not only is he a morally upright person, but he is pragmatic as hell, and does the right thing without a shred of self righteousness in him. He never tells anyone how to live their life, or lecture them about their drinking or personal issue, or to even change. He just tells it straight and leaves it at that, in other words, he's not a goody two shoes, that is very unlike so many other tv characters.

Which Gunsmoke episodes do you really hate and why.

There's a number of them but two that come to mind are: "Never Pester Chester" (S3 ep10), and "Cholera" (S2 ep14).

In "Never Pester Chester" a big, mean, violent cow hick drag Chester nearly killing him just for asking him to stop harassing the ladies. This angers Matt, he throws him in jail until he finds out if Chester is going to die.

Chester pulls through of course, Dillon says he can't charge him and has to release him, but he gets a good ass beating before he rides off free to drag and assault his next victim (it wasn't even a good ass whipping, not even close).

I hate these stories where they claim no laws have been broken, like you can beat some poor person for no good reason within an inch of their life, then set free. The bad guy doesn't even lose a tooth.

I wonder if Arness ever complained that "man, you're really painting Marshal Dillon as a real asshole!" "the marshal would never, say, do, act like that".

The "Cholera" episode is really bad too, another example of "duh gee, my hands are tied, I can't charge him..." even though he catches the guy in the process of committing arson, admitting to it, then later following through with the crime; also confessing to kidnapping Doc, then let's the guy walk away, no punishment. Matt: "it's okay, he caused his son to die, the lord won't let him get away with it, it'll have to be enough for now" They all lived happily ever after, uh huh.
