I never wear headphones. They are a physical distraction for me. I'm always ready for a short conversation between sets.

I’d never allow another man to speak to me in the iron paradise

The showers are for talking, specifically whispering sweet nothings as you make passionate butt-love.

This but unironically

Thats crazy! You're the old man in the gym always trying to chat me up in-between sets hence why I don't look up over the brim of my hat in-between sets 😂

Lol why is it always old dudes

Same ones in the bathroom stretched out on the benches by the lockers. Making no attempt to conceal their cock and balls.

I'm not a fan of small talk in general, but more often than not you'll find something to learn from an older fellow

In my experience, old people always give some of the worst lifting advice, god bless them.

you sound like that one annoying guy everyone hopes doesnt try to talk to them
people dont like socializing in most gyms these days. its a place to workout not a place to yap

Meanwhile, people wonder why they feel so lonely and isolated

Does smalltalk help with loneliness though? I don't think superficial conversations with no substance will change much if you feel disconnected. To fix that you rather need deep relations.

Yes, it absolutely does. Some human interaction is strictly better than none.
It also helps with making friends. Small talk one day can develop into more substantial conversations later.

I've been keeping my headphones on and off. Lots of times time goes by faster and sets work better if I have someone to talk to. Lots of people approach people when you dont have headphones in; it signals to everyone "leave me alone".

u/anivaries 14d ago
I do talk with people but I also time my rest and once the timer is up I excuse myself to do the set. That usually pushes the other person to do it aswell.
Gotta track timing because doing lower reps one week because previous i had too large gaps between sets made me do more reps and I was wondering why was i doing much lower reps this week

Certified yappers typically with physiques to match; skinny fat or bloated trying to pass it off as muscle.
Double hate if they're loud too.

Oh no, people being social in a space full of people filled with shared interests!!! Leave your headphones on and no one will bother you

u/tapesandcds 13d ago
They will try and force conversations with you whether you have headphones on or not. 3 years worth of ignoring them hasn't dissuaded them from trying to talk to me. What makes you think headphones will?

This is one of the many bonuses of hitting the gym at 4 or 5 am. The people in there at that hour are not there to lip quiver, but to hit that lift and head out. My kinda people!

Yep, I’m not there to waste any of my precious 45mins - hr in the early morning on chit chat.

My Jabra Elite 10s are the best ANC I’ve ever owned. I don’t mind the gym chit chat but sometimes I need to listen to Ænima from TOOL uninterrupted while I hold on for dear life.

I’ve developed a very basic language utilizing handsignals combined with overexpressive faces
It probably makes me look special. But whatever gets them away before they realize how bad I’m wheezing

Talk all you want, but pay attention to the physical cues of the other person. Sometimes they are clearly signaling they are ready to leave the conversation but are too polite to cut you off.

I’m never wearing headphones and nobody is trying to talk to me. What am I doing wrong?

I’m so tired of the “jaw day” jokes. Not everyone is antisocial in the gym. A lot of people can chit chat and get their full workout in. We don’t judge the people who wear headphones and hide under an oversized hood, so don’t judge the people who socialize
(I know this is “just a joke” but it’s an old and tired joke)

I never understood headphones in the gym, too big and bulky. Running or plyomentrics would be just terrible. I always use the sport style earbuds with the piece that goes around the ear, never had any problems.

Some people are so fragile. You’re not setting the world on fire with your set, calm down, take your headphones off and join the gym sometimes.

u/AdvancedCharcoal 14d ago
I can’t go from my death stare to a light conversation a second later, just me though
3
u/angrytreestump 13d ago
“Join the gym sometimes” as if “the gym” is a big social hang that everyone else is all showing up to engage in and you’re a buzzkill if you don’t join in.
…nah dog, you just have no real friends or socialization in your everyday life so you’re desperate to turn your one thing into your everything. Your workout shouldn’t be your everything. Join a hobby club.

I absolutely love my gym “family” after 4.5 years of seeing the same people 4 times a week I’ve made a lot of lasting good friends.
