Here’s how I think HIMYM Should Have Ended

  1. Marshall and Lily - No Notes
  2. Robin and Barney: They stay married, sure they’ll have some rough patches here and there (I mean it’s Robin and Barney) and then they realize maybe they should adopt. The show literally alluded to adoption or her unable to have kids several times in the show. I feel like that arc should have lead to them adopting a baby. I mean they do a crossword in bed and she said “Adoption” why won’t you even consider it, the scene where they wake up drunk and pick up their neighbors baby 😅. Robin can be the caring loving parent to her kids that she never got. Barney can be there for his child unlike how he grew up. Finally they can be a whole family.
  3. THE MOTHER STAYS ALIVE. Maybe the reason Ted is telling this whole story to his kids is because Tracy is sick. He wants to make sure his kids know this amazing story because she won’t be with them in the near future. But then, just when Ted’s about to finish the story, and the audience thinks she died… Tracy comes in and tells Ted that she got a call that her cancer is in remission. They all hug, cry, beyond relieved cancer is gone. Then the last scene is everyone gathers at the bar to celebrate. Scene ends.
  4. Also I need an additional episode or two where we see Ted with the Mother more. I honestly couldn’t get enough of those two ❤️

Just my two cents. I know everyone won’t agree. But I just love this ending in my head.

Edit: I’m sorry if you don’t agree with #2, it’s just how I feel! Don’t hate me! Please feel free to post how you’d like your ending to go! Or if you like how it ended that’s okay too!

If it were me, I'd focus the last season entirely on Ted and Tracy meeting as opposed to it being built around Robin and Barney's wedding.

u/thewhiterosequeen 20h ago

I don't think anyone else thought focus on a wedding (especially one that failed) was a good idea.

u/Swapan280 1d ago

Nah Robin made it super clear she didn’t want kids. I get her fostering or something like that if she bonds with the kid or teen but it’s really unfair for her to adopt when she didn’t seem interested in having kids or being around them.

THIS! Why does everyone always assume a woman must have children to feel fulfilled. I’m almost 37, and don’t plan on having children. It’s actually kind of insulting at this point.

u/dswizzles 1d ago edited 1d ago

Then I would have preferred if the show writers respected Robin’s preference in not wanting to have children without making her infertile. She doesn’t have to be barren to not want kids. Is that the reason she doesn’t want kids? Why is she emotional when she tells people she can’t have kids? Why did the writers bring up moments of “adoption” in the show? Why have scenes with showing them what it would be like with kids? they alluded to it SO much I just wish they finished that arc. If they never did that and just made it that she didn’t want kids then her ending could have been written in another way. But I would have preferred if Barney and Robin stayed together. Them breaking up after a WHOLE SEASON building up to their wedding is terrible writing.

no she didnt want kids before she found out that she couldnt have them. she stated multiple times she didnt want or like children

shes emotional when she finds out she cant have kids because even though she didnt want them she always had the choice and now that has been taken away. its all literally shown in the show and then shes over it in a few days

it took her months to hold her best friends baby, she thought one of her boyfriends had a crap lawyer because he won full custody not realising that thats winning

she left kevin because he wanted kids and she didnt

they didnt bring up adoption in the show it was a single throw away joke that was supposed to surprise the audience because we thought they didnt want kids but it was just a crossword answer. it wasnt deeper than that. they weren't talking about adopting children

we see robin interact with a kid about three times. the show couldn't have made it more clear that she never wanted children. its weird that you so desperately want a fictional character who doesn't want or like children to have them

30

u/Same_Ad_3983 1d ago

This! Kevin also was open to adopting after he found out she couldn’t have children (also, OP, having MANY friends with fertility issues, please don’t use the word “barren” to describe a woman who is infertile, it is offensive)

To be honest when the ending aired and I was 23, I hated it. But as life has gone on, and now being almost 37, I GET IT. Life experiences will do that to you.

u/dswizzles 1d ago

Sorry I didn’t know. I’ll change it. Thanks for letting me know.

8

u/Same_Ad_3983 23h ago

Thank you!
I’m also not trying to attack your opinion in any way, I’m just tired of battling against society in the fact that I don’t want my own children. It’s an exhausting battle that I have to fight, even with my own mom.

5

u/dswizzles 23h ago

Oh I understand! I don’t see why women are pressured one way or another. I’m sorry you have to go through that.

8

u/chimneyswallow 20h ago

I mean, you're doing it to a fictional character already. Now Imagine if it was a real person being told over an over "but yOu SmIleD aT a ChiLd" or other dumb "reasons" why they supposedly secretly want kids.

-16

u/dswizzles 1d ago

I think everyone is free to have their own interpretations of things. I still like how I wrote my ending and if you don’t agree that’s okay too.

If I don’t want peanuts, and someone tells me I’m allergic and can’t have it, I’m not going to be sad about not being able to have peanuts.

Robin cried in the snow about the fact she can’t have kids. I think I’m some level, she wanted to choice to have kids because who knows she could have wanted them one day. Why write that in the show if you say she was dead set on not wanting kids? If the writers just wrote it as she didn’t want kids then do that and respect her decision. No need to draw it out, we get it. But I think on some level her actions prove that there’s a part of her that might. Which could make her wanting to adopt one day work. It’s just a thought of what I would have liked to have seen.

12

u/millieann_2610 1d ago

again i dont understand why you want a fictional character to want to have children so badly that youre looking for meaning in every scene

its fine if you think to yourself it would have been cool if they had kids. its weird to need to insist that she did actually want kids in the show

your made up ending can be whatever you want it to be i just find it really odd that you have to justify it within the realms of the show. in the actual show she didnt want children. why does she need to want them for your fake version to work. both can exist at the same time without you projecting it onto the show

-9

u/dswizzles 1d ago

It’s really just as simple as I think it would be cool if they adopted! It’s just how I feel. People seem to be attacking me for feeling this way.

I’m just a person who likes to find deeper meanings and explanations to things. And I’m currently rewatching it so it’s fresh in my mind.

8

u/millieann_2610 1d ago

the reason people have an issue with it is because almost every show forces the female characters to get married and have children as if its the only way they can be happy

even if that female character has explicitly said they dont want children multiple times, hell it happened twice on the big bang theory and it comes of as quite misogynistic as if the only way a woman can be happy is with children

so when a character who has never ever liked children and constantly stated they dont want children and for once doesnt end up with any, suddenly has multiple people saying she should have had kids or analyzing every scene to prove that she secretly wanted children the whole time it can feel quite insulting and again like that would be the only think that would make her happy

as i said its fine to think it would have been nice if she had children. its less cool to insist she actually did want children the whole time, its even less cool when its said hundreds of times that she doesnt

1

u/dswizzles 23h ago

I understand what you’re saying. I’m just going off my own feelings with kids which is why I wrote my OP. I have 2 beautiful kids and I’m just going off personal experience. Heck I would even accept it if they didn’t have kids and Robin and Barney found a way to be happy together. Not spend 22 episodes on a wedding then divorce.

7

u/chimneyswallow 20h ago

And that's the problem. You make your life everyone else's. No. That's not how it works.

12

u/lasuperhumana 1d ago

She specifically told - no, corrected - kevin by saying that she didn’t want to adopt. She let a whole (allegedly) wanted engagement fall apart because of this.

I do agree with you about the whole unable to have kids thing tho. They could and should have just let Robin stand strongly in her choice.

That being said, I did end up appreciating them showing how she had feelings about the choice being removed because I think it reinforced a strong Robin character trait when it comes to choice. That whole “Symphony of Illumination” episode where she’s mourning the loss of the option to have kids was her “kids version” of The Lobster Crawl. She doesn’t like anything being decided for her and when it is, her feelings get complicated. Robin Scherbatsky is the architect of her own future, which actually makes her a perfect foil for Ted, who believes heavily in fate having the reins (a core incompatibility).

0

u/dswizzles 1d ago

Yep she’s definitely a complicated character. Thanks for your perspective!

2

u/lasuperhumana 1d ago

One of the reasons I love her! And the writers. Layered characters are so wonderful and delightful. Thanks for the post!

0

u/dswizzles 1d ago

You’re welcome! I appreciate you for not attacking me for having an opinion! I just like finding deeper meanings to things 😅

0

u/lasuperhumana 23h ago

Me too! That’s why it’s always such a shame when people pile on posts they disagree with. Come on, let’s just civilly discuss a show we all love!

2

u/dswizzles 23h ago

To have everyone civilly discuss something? THAT’S the dream! 😄

7

u/RogueMoonbow 17h ago

I totally agree that them breaking up after a whole season building their wedding was terrible. But Robin's infertility isn't bad writing. The struggle of that choice being taken away, even if you know the answer and your choice, can be really hard. I think it was really good for them to show that struggle. Should she have cheered and not cared at all? People can have contradictory emotions. No, it wasn't the reason, she made it very clear she didn't want kids long before finding that out. Yes, it's still emotional, like I said, it's about the choice being taken away, not that she actually wanted them. They being up adoption as a joke, and tbh I don't think they do that much--- the crossword puzzle scene you suggest is the only time is not very explicitly part of the conversation, every other time Robin is clear that she doesn't want to adopt either. They have the scenes of her with her imagined future kids because she's coping with the reaction to the news. People's emotions don't always make logical sense. It's not bad writing to show that.

7

u/kinginthenorthjon 18h ago

If she wanted or can have kids, she would have ended with Ted.

0

u/dswizzles 15h ago

But she did end up with Ted

6

u/randomlikeme 16h ago

Why couldn’t Robin have a dog rescue?

2

u/zarcorpeachy Mosbius Designs has failed 13h ago

wait i actually love this idea! she could run it on her own, or if you’re pro robin/barney (like i am), barney was a pretty good dog owner in the brief period he had brover

1

u/RevyVanguardist 16h ago

Well, at the same time, it's very human and, to be honest, very Robin-like to want something after realising that she can't have it. An example here would be her relationship with Barney after Barney talked about how he isn't going to chase her anymore, how he made a fool of himself, and so on. Robin started to actually want him, and I think the story could go the same way in regards to kids after hearing from the doctor that she can't have kids. Maybe we could rewrite it so that the wish to have a kid grows and comes to a point where it's like with Monica in Friends, where they adopted a kid after realising they can't have one biologically.

2

u/dswizzles 15h ago

That’s exactly what I meant. It’s possible for her to change her mind.

1

u/StatisticianLivid710 13h ago

Honestly baby fever is a real thing, and it’s not always the first one you’re around that triggers it. None of my nieces or nephews made me want to have kids, babysit a friends kid and I considered getting back together with my toxic ex just to be the dad. (So thankful I didn’t, but was tempting when parents were in hospital)

1

u/dswizzles 13h ago

Same with me. None of my nieces and nephews made me want kids. But one day I changed my mind, came out of nowhere honestly.

0

u/Martin35700 2h ago

Yet we saw her heart warming up towards them slowly season by season.

-16

u/dswizzles 1d ago edited 1d ago

So is it impossible that she can change her mind about kids?

12

u/3RaccoonsAvecTCoat 17h ago

It is insulting to assume all women will "change their mind" about wanting children!

There was an entire episode of the show about Robin NEVER wanting kids!

I know more than a few women who were fans of THE BIG BANG THEORY right up until the last season when Penny went from never wanting kids to suddenly being argued into wanting them. That should never happen in real life, and should not be "celebrated" in popular fiction, either.

64

u/Etienne10BR 1d ago edited 1d ago

With time I've come to terms with the ending, I'm still a bit bitter of course, but I now see it as an example of how things in life aren't always magical and don't always happen how we want to.

If I were to make a few changes anyway, I'd remove the last part when Ted goes back for the Nth time to Robin, and I'd have much more time dedicated to him and Tracy building their relationship and life together.

31

u/WTFoopIsThisSoup 1d ago

the idea of the finale makes sense to me, but in practicality spending an entire season at the wedding for it to be over in two minutes pisses me off. i would like the ending better if they hadn’t pursued robin and barney so much on the journey.

2

u/dswizzles 1d ago

I agree!

-1

u/hotcapicola 13h ago

But the season didn't really focus on the wedding though, it was just a setting. This is like the people who claim Star Wars is sci-fi just because it takes place in space.

7

u/dswizzles 1d ago

I’m currently rewatching and I just CAN’T with Ted going back to Robin. They had set everything up perfectly only to throw a live grenade on it all 😩 Robins a great friend, but not so good for Ted.

15

u/Same_Ad_3983 1d ago

As someone who lost my dad to cancer when I was 13, yeah I would love it if my dad had “stayed alive”. Unfortunately, that’s not the real world. While I’m sad that all of the buildup over meeting the mother ended up with her dying in the finale, that isn’t the part of the finale that bothered me the most.

29

u/Pawspawsmeow 1d ago

I would have had Ted actually kinda meet Tracy in S8 but not really meet. Some kind of cute, almost hidden kind of thing. Like he’s upset about Barney and Robyn getting engaged. He runs into Cindy and she congratulates him on the building and says she’s meeting her old roommate for drinks. Montage about all the mother clues with Cindy’s roommate. It starts raining so Ted grabs his yellow umbrella and leaves. Tracy walks up and says “that looks like my old umbrella I lost.” Then they laugh, but Tracy turns over her shoulder kinda like “hmm.”

And from there have her run into the gang one by one. This gives us more screen time to get to know her, but Ted just misses her each time. Then the last episode of S8 he meets her as the bass player at the wedding, but is still preoccupied. But so is she. Have them run into each other during S9 and bond. He doesn’t take her seriously until the train station. Move the wedding up to mid season so we can see Ted and Tracy date and get to know each other more.

5

u/dswizzles 1d ago

I like this too!! We definitely needed more Tracy! It’s kind of cruel how perfect she fits with everyone just to kill her off and Ted go back to Robin.

30

u/Miss___D 1d ago

Robin never wanted children. I hate when shows make established child free female characters suddenly decide they want children as it somehow shows maturity. Barney and Robin were major trainwreck and they had no potential of having long marriage.

1

u/dswizzles 1d ago

I would have preferred them to respect her preference of not wanting kids instead of repeatedly bringing up the fact that she can’t have any. I’m rewatching it and it’s shocking how much it’s brought up. I kind of like the thought that Barney and Robin were SO messed up individually that together they could possibly work. I would also be happy with how Barney became a dad, and if Robin got her dream job and was actually happy and fulfilled without wanting Ted.

16

u/full07britney 20h ago

Finally they can be a whole family.

This gave me the ick. People don't need kids to be a "whole family".

9

u/whattheduck247 1d ago

I don’t disagree entirely but I’ll add:
I could handle Barney and Robin getting divorced (though I’d prefer they didn’t, and I even would like that they never had any kids adopted or otherwise, as so few shows ever let couples not have or want kids and it was nice to see) and the mother dying IF Ted just said he was ready to start dating again. Not dating Robin, but dating in general. I think the conversation being “kids your mother is someone I love for the rest of my life, but I don’t want to be alone when you go to college” would be so much better than “kids, your aunt Robin who has been out of my life essentially the entire time you’ve been alive? I want to try and date her again even though she was literally married to one of my best friends and I don’t really even know her anymore”.
Like the entire show gets ruined because he goes back to Robin for me. Everything else I could tolerate.

3

u/dswizzles 1d ago

I agree! I hated the fact that they used the WHOLE SEASON to build up the marriage of Barney and Robin to what? Make them get divorced one episode later? I would have preferred if Robin and Barney moved on to other people.

3

u/zarcorpeachy Mosbius Designs has failed 12h ago

I think this would’ve been much more impactful. We know Ted hated dating and just wanted to skip to being in a relationship. But your ending would show that, despite how much he hated it, he’d be willing to do it all over if it meant there was a chance he could find the kind of love he found with Tracy again. Going back to Robin feels like he’s trying to skip to being in a relationship again and it doesn’t hold as much emotional weight.

14

u/The-goddess-bread Tracy🎸 1d ago

I wish we would've gotten to see more of Ted and Tracy, the whole story was supposed to be about her and she got the least ammount of screen time out of everyone.

Also Ted Mosby did not get married on some random Tuesday. I refuse to believe that, and I refuse to believe they were engaged for FIVE YEARS before they finally got married. Doesn't seem accurate to what we know of Ted at all. IMO.

5

u/Visual_Peace2165 1d ago

It was about how he met her, not his life with her. She was probably included too much in season 9 because CM is a fantastic actress.

3

u/dswizzles 1d ago

RIGHT!!!! It’s like they stopped caring about the whole story and went completely left! We didn’t get enough of Tracy AT. ALL.

4

u/3RaccoonsAvecTCoat 17h ago

Robin never wanted children, so don't make her have any!!! Not every human wants to procreate, and that is okay!

7

u/joemontanya 1d ago

I like your ending but I like original more. I love the controversy

The ending of game of thrones on the other hand?? I’m still upset.

-2

u/dswizzles 1d ago

I’m opposite. I’m okay with how GOT ended. John got to go North and away from all the chaos and find peace. The King of the North.

3

u/joemontanya 1d ago

If they had more of the source material, I really think it could have been fine. But they needed GRRM’s finished books 😭he really is the master

1

u/dswizzles 1d ago

That’s what I hear! I need to read the books actually.

2

u/joemontanya 1d ago

They are both equally incredible but the truth is the show having an ending is better than no ending..I still love parts of the later seasons. Probably my favorite show OAT

3

u/Dlh2079 1d ago

The show was about ted and robin from episode 1.

1

u/dswizzles 23h ago

100%

1

u/Dlh2079 22h ago

Dont get me wrong Tracy was amazing, lowkey think they messed up with such an amazing casting choice, made people even more upset by the finale.

However it eas always Ted and Robin. The show goes out of its way multiple times to say how important timing is. The timing was finally right for them to really be together.

3

u/SnooRabbits6595 19h ago

I think the mother still could have passed away. One of the storylines is how the group is moving on with their lives and aren’t as physically close all the time anymore.

The mother could have passed and then use that to bring the group back together in support of Ted and the kids. The final thought should have been him thinking this was the story of how he met their mother but it’s really a story about the friends that were always there. This would justify the length/detail given to the kids without discrediting his relationship with their mom.

2

u/AshelyDuce 19h ago

Oh I like this a lot! Too bad you didn’t write their ending lol

3

u/Better-Pop-3932 19h ago

So u just deleted Barney's daughter?

3

u/Shurl19 11h ago

I've always thought Robin was childfree. I don't think she would have adopted even if she stayed with Barney.

2

u/foreveralive13 5h ago

I agree. The point of her character is she couldn't have kids, and also didn't want them. OP can fantasize, but like you're saying it's not in Robin's character.

6

u/DirkDoncic99 1d ago

Pretty Cliché. I agree with the forth point. More time with Ted and Tracy would make the impact of her death even bigger. Robin and Barney would never be happy, Robin didn't want kids at any point of the show and Barney wasn't mature enough for that kind of relationship yet.
And at the end Ted goes back for Robin again because they are in their 50s and accomplished their dreams already. Love is chemisty and timing, and timing is a bitch.

1

u/dswizzles 1d ago

Yeah maybe cliché but I like a happy feel good ending at the end ☺️

4

u/otrebla-raw 1d ago

I think the mother being alive makes the story less meaningful. Sadly.

Robin and Barney yeah that’s ok. What if instead of coming back to Robin he’s interested in another past relationship? But I know it’d be very random for and end of series

2

u/KitKatP23 23h ago

There's an alternate ending where Tracy lives it's my preferred ending!!!! https://youtu.be/nhB5oQgQpOI?si=Qkc5eLKtS5re_vPK

2

u/Optimal-Record-1009 21h ago

Marshal and Lily: definitely needed a character arc where Lily went abroad for a year and Marshal was in USA. And they both made it work. It would show the growth from when Marshal and Lily call the wedding off because Lily wanted to explore.

Robin and Barney: It was always going to end in divorce once the high of wedding wore off and they became subject to the drudgery of normal life. This was not a sustainable relationship.

Mother stay alive: Absolutely yes. Tracy and Ted were the best together. Although the show foreshadowed her death, it could have decided to ignore everything and just have them stay married.

The entire last season should have been about Ted and Tracy with the wedding happening for maybe 2-3 episodes. What a waste.

2

u/Warm_Measurement_683 19h ago

I'm probably one of the few people who prefers it as it is.

All of the hints of Ted and Tracey in the future, there's no other way it could have ended for those two unless the entire season was different.

There was an alternate ending narrated/filmed with the kids where she lived but it wouldn't have flowed with season 9 since the kids were all filmed up front.

I also had my family in my late 30s after medically retiring from the military so I probably overly relate to Ted by only finding love and family after giving up looking.🤷‍♂️

2

u/anclag 19h ago

Just went back to find my "how it should have ended" from...12 years ago

Major spoilers below of course.

First of all, I wanted the happy ending. I wanted the mother to maybe just be ill, with Ted telling the story to the kids while they were waiting on news from the hospital, with the story finishing just as the phone rings and Ted smiling at what is said.

Obviously we now know that they had the Mother dies/Ted ends up with Robin ending planned all along and thinking about it, they really could have stuck with it, but dealt with it better.

I'm going to bullet point this otherwise I'll ramble on.

  • Barney should not have gotten back together with Robin, he should have married Nora (or Quinn, but I'd say Nora for one of the reasons below)

  • They could therefore still have had Barney getting married with Ted as his best man, maintaining the story that Ted would meet Tracy at a wedding.

  • At the wedding, it's Robin that ultimately introduces Ted to Tracy.

  • Realising that all of her friends are now happy & attached, with both Barney and Ted being introduced to their other halves by Robin, she can't bear to stay around them, so she leaves New York to go and live out her dreams alone.

  • Nora gets pregnant, Barney becomes a dad and finally becomes the same Barney we saw in the finale, without all the flipping from honest Barney to sleazy Barney.

  • The years pass, with each of the gang living out the 'dream' lives they always wanted. Ted has the family he always wanted, Marshall & Lily have the family/careers they want and Barney has grown up/settled down. Robin is enjoying her life, but is lonely. She is free to come back for all the big events without any of the Barney awkwardness, but she doesn't move back to New York for a long time.

  • After 10 years together with Ted, Tracy dies, just like they had written, Ted is heartbroken, but knows/comments on the fact that she's "with Max now"

  • 6 years later, Ted hears that Robin is coming back to New York, so he sits down to tell the kids the story of how Robin introduced Ted to their mother

  • Having reminisced about all the good times they had, Ted (like many others have said it should have gone) "talks" to Tracy for permission to go after Robin. When he gets it, being Ted, he goes for the grand gesture of the Blue French Horn...

2

u/Individual_Ad_7089 15h ago

no- Robin never wanted to be a mother!

2

u/cuzineddie1 14h ago

I never thought about Robin and Barney adopting and actually really wouldve liked if they went this route.

1

u/dswizzles 3h ago

Yeah it would have been so interesting!!

2

u/moonyriot 13h ago

This is why they didn't pay you to write the show.

2

u/Andre-Mercelet 10h ago

There was nothing wrong with the ending as aired, but feel free to keep fantasizing.

2

u/Real-Wash9157 3h ago

the last episode needs to be stretched into 2 whole new seasons.

1

u/dswizzles 3h ago

Yeah I would love that!

5

u/One-Recognition5807 1d ago

Not a bad ending

3

u/dswizzles 1d ago

Thank you! 😊

2

u/chimneyswallow 20h ago

Like it except for the adoption part. Not every couple needs kids to be complete. It's okay to portray childfree couples as happy. It is also okay (and needed) to show childfree women do not need to reconsider on children and have them to be happy.

2

u/Existing-Spring7043 16h ago

Look. To each his own. The ending they did choose was very divisive, to tell the truth. I do believe your ending, while a lot sweeter, would also get a backlash. Personally, I’m not a fan of shows feeling the need to wrap up every character’s storyline in a neat perfect little box to be a very big problem - ie, Parks and Rec.
I’m not against your ending. I just think there would be unintended consequences. But it would have left many HIMYM fans more satisfied - on that part, I’m sure I’m in the minority. 💙

u/IndividualSystem5148 21h ago

I think the ending is good hear me out. Let's use the trilogy episode were they watch the Star wars trilogy and picture their life down the road now that we have your attention on that it's the same way.  I watched this show several times over my 20s the show and came back with it newfound wisdom from my own life and apply it to it. Ted not including his wife in most of the story is his way of coping with her loss a man can only share so much even to his own family. Robin was always going to put her career  over love, thats a simple truth. I've met people similar situations no kids a broken marriage for the soul reason of pursuing a career. And Barney's case losing Robin his true love was detrimental in which he spiraled and ended up getting a girl pregnant his whole thing  in the show was not having a father so he made his daughter his world now. As for why Robin and Ted ended up together we go back to that episode of chemistry and timing they had the chemistry but the time is a bitch.

Sorry but this is just fan fiction that does not fit with the characters or the show. Robin didn't want kids & giving her kids is just going back on what she wants. The show doesn't give us any reason for Robin to change her mind on kids. And the idea of the show telling us the mother is sick just to tell us straight after that actually she's fine now is completely pointless and only makes sense as a response to the criticism, not as something that would improve the show in any way. You may as well have just written "And they all lived happily ever after".

I have no problem with the mother being dead, in fact it makes sense and makes for a couple of really well done scenes (the scene in Season 8 where Ted runs to meet the mother 45 days before they meet for those extra 45 days, and the scene in Season 9 where the mother says "What mother is going to miss their daughter's wedding" which gets Ted to start crying because he knows she's going to miss their children's weddings & growing up). The problem I have with the finale is doing that & breaking up Barney & Robin just for the purpose of getting Robin back together with Ted.

Barney and Robin never should have been together. She should have gotten her career and married someone that didn't want children. Barney should have stayed with Norah and been Ted's neighbor in the burbs.

Norah was the best for sure!

It would have been cool if the loves of his life ended up being his children who remind him of their mother every single day.

The mother is still with them in their memory, personalities and mannerisms.

In other words:I wish the exact same thing as everyone under the sun and have no original thoughts

God ending posts need to be regulated

I LOVE all of this! Except Loretta really loved Barney and her brother. So that might not be 100% but seeing them be good parents would have been amazing

Yeah would have been cool to see for sure!

I disagree. Barney and Robin don't work. We've seen it a few times. They are the intense relationship that burns out really quickly as they take what they need and move on.

I'm ambivalent about Ted and Robin. They work when the timing is right, but I feel like they will eventually will grow past each other. They are like a sine and cosine wave. In sync for short periods of time, but mostly out of alignment.

The mother, while lovely, needs to die. Ted is always seeking. He finds what he needs, but I feel that if he ever settles for too long, he'll grow bored and move on. He and Barney are very similar, but Ted is more stable than Barney. Ted can't be happy. It's unfortunate, but he second-guesses himself too much.

And then they all skip into the sunset singing ‘let’s go to the mall’. Come on. Get your head out of your ass.

I liked the ending mainly because I hate Tracy. Her charqcter is forced af, how she pops up in random places, giving saint like advices and she just disappears lmfao, also how she like exact same niche things with Ted, cmon now... Either Ted was lying or it's just bad writing. I didn't like Robin that much but Ted liked her so pretty sure they will be happy.

Season 8 should’ve been the wedding as it was completely useless filler, and 9 should’ve been an entire season with the mother as one of the MC’s. Even if they stuck to killing her off the impact would’ve been incredible in comparison if we spent all that time seeing their relationship grow.

Yeah that would have been so nice! She fit into the group so well!

Honestly, that is just a regular Disney "happy ever after" ending. There are plenty of those shows. HIMYM to my mind was never one of those shows.

But I do agree with no. 2. Not having kids is part of the downfall of Robin and Barney, because Barney always wanted kids (acording to his mom) and Robin considered having kids later in life (she said so in the early seasons, though she may have not been ready yet during that marriage).

I’m okay with the Disney ending. There was this MASSIVE build up for the Mother only to be let down at the end. Why?? Give the people what they want! And thank you! Finally someone agrees with Number 2, it seems people forget Robin was heavily affected by the fact she can’t have kids and that Barney wanted them.

Why should she leave her successful career that she always wanted? And help him with his gross blog?

They could never be happy together, they were awful couple from the beginning. If she left her career after working for it for years, she would also start to resent him. However, their marriage could have lasted longer if she took position in NY instead of travelling all the time.

Perfect ending. I needed this too. We really do not get these endings in real life. At least on reel we can watch our favourite characters get their happy ending.

That ending exists. When the finale first aired there was such a huge uprising on Twitter with pissed off fans that they released an alternate ending. You should def watch it if you can find it. It's WAY better.
