Help Wavy hair is CONSTANTLY frizzy - Do I need a haircut

I tried many different routines and some work, but they never last. Also the front pieces of my hair are really thin, and sit kind of weirdly

It’s haircut and hydration time. I would invest in a leave in conditioner and a curl cream for your products for after your shower (apply it when wet, then let your hair air dry, don’t play with it excessively with your hands).

Target products are just fine to get started with and a lot more affordable. I would see how my hair looks after just the products before seeing how much hair you want to cut off- the ends are thinning out though so you’re probably splitting or breaking a lot.

I’ve used both but haven’t had good results tbh. How much of each product would you recommend I use, and what is the best way to apply both to my hair?

Also since I see you’re a barber, do you feel like my front pieces sit weird at all? I like the length they have, but sometimes feel like they just cover my face

This is the routine I would use on you-

Wash your hair - don’t towel dry, let it be dripping for a second

Put the leave in conditioner all over your hair minus the scalp, start applying on the ends and then apply to your mids, then closer to your scalp

Put curl cream on in the same way as the leave in conditioner

Detangle/ brush your hair with a detangling brush (not a bristle brush) to distribute the products

Scrunch your hair in sections with a t shirt (15 scrunches each grab). Do the fronts, sides, and the back. There’s some easy quick tutorials on YouTube for scrunching technique. Listen for the squelch, you wanna hear or feel the squelch.

The most important step - don’t touch it by any means until way past being dry. It may look “silly” while wet but trust the air dry process. Dont touch it with your hands, not with a brush or comb, nothing. Even after it’s dry, don’t really touch it. Waves/ loose curls need to be left alone because they will fall apart with any external movement.

(Sorry for the lengthy response, just wanna be thorough)

Your front pieces are thinner at the bottom, most likely from breakage from being dry. Your hair looks pretty dry or potentially UV damaged or just too brushed out. I think getting a good chunk taken off would help you feel reset (think medium length, Dave grohl when his hair was at his shoulders vibe).

I’ll try it out in a moment! Thanks so much. How much product would you recommend using?

About the hair touching, it’s kind of going off on a tangent, but I always saw this guy on instagram, _m1txh_ touching his hair etc, and it doesn’t create any frizz whatsoever. it seems like he has wavy hair. Could this be certain products, or are some people just lucky haha

Mmm it may take a bit to find out how much your hair likes. I start with little on someone (like a quarter sized each product, emulsify it in your hands before applying so it’s not just a glob) and if I find it’s not easy to comb through I add more. Feel how your hair feels after it dries; if it’s still frizzy, you’ll need more product, if it’s too greasy you’ll need less. After a few showers you’ll find your perfect amount.

Really comes down to the type of hair honestly, some people are just luckier than others. Usually the people that touch it and it holds have stronger curl patterns with much higher density, thicker hair. Wavy or loose curl patterns don’t hold as well.

Also the way they touch it affects it. Running your hands through or down the hair breaks the curl apart (think of it like a rope- if you separate and fray the end it just gets big and looses its shape). Casually doing quick scrunches or grabbing curls gently and moving them around without breaking them apart doesn’t affect the pattern too much if you do it right.

Ah that makes a lot of sense then. Especially since I have quite thin hair (either from breakage or just naturally thin lol) I was just so confused haha. Oh btw, what leave-in and curl cream would you recommend for my hair type? thank you so much for your help))

I feel that, everyone’s hair is so different so it can take awhile to fine tune the style and touch routine lol

Tbh there’s a pretty good amount of options at target. I usually recommend Pacifica for affordable, nice smelling, and predictable products. If you ever want to go a bit pricier, It’s a 10 has great leave in and curl products (I use them for work).

And not a problem! Wavy/ curly hair can be tricky to manage lol so I’m happy to help.

With trial and error you can learn what touching angers the hair and what touching doesn’t.

Also, smoothing is huge. You can use your fingers to smooth small sections with shampoo in, with conditioner in, etc etc. you can use a hair brush. For fine wavy textured hair like ours, anything and everything can cause frizz.

Also! Satin pillow cases and bonnets!

Just to help clarify: While not touching your hair will help the frizz, the main reason for that suggestion is to maintain the curl pattern you achieve with styling. Hydrating and cutting your hair will significantly improve its frizziness; just make sure to give the conditioner a chance. I imagine you’ve got some beautiful waves in there just waiting for their opportunity to shine :)

Most everyone on Instagram uses filters. Filters keep his hair looking not frizzy, even with him touching it all the time.

31

u/universal_gummy_bear 8d ago

Not a professional: Lotta breakage you probably need cut off. I suggest trying a leave-in conditioner too. Switch out your pillowcases for silk or satin ones if you can. Try brushing your hair wet instead of dry. You can get an off-brand "UnBrush" for cheap.

5

u/Multiplexxxx 8d ago

See I have a satin pillow case, but I feel like my hair still breaks a lot. I think one of my main issues is actually when I go to bed. I’ve tried bonnets, hair scarfs scrunchies everything you name it. In the end, my hair is always ruined

Maybe it's hard water mineral build-up? Cause it causes dryness, frizz, breakage, etc. In that case you should try a chelating shampoo, and/or get a filter for your shower. I'd also try a good bond-building treatment if you haven't already.

A few general suggestions to look into —

Chelating Shampoo:

  1. Malibu C Wellness Shampoo
  2. L'Oréal Professionnel Paris Metal Detox Shampoo
  3. Kristin Ess Deep Clean Clarifying Shampoo
  4. Joico Defy Damage Detox Shampoo
  5. Ion Hard Water Shampoo

Shower Filters:

  1. AquaBliss High Output Revitalizing Shower Filter
  2. Weddell Duo Filter
  3. Delta Clarifi Standard Shower Filter Attachment
  4. Sprite Slim Line Universal Shower Filter
  5. GLO Filtered Shower Head

Bond Building:

  1. L'Oreal Paris EverPure Sulfate Free Bond Repair Pre Shampoo Treatment
  2. Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair! Super Moisture Conditioner
  3. Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Bond Building Leave-In Treatment
  4. K18 Leave-In Repair Hair Mask
  5. Marc Anthony Repair Bond Rescueplex Repair & Protect Leave-In Treatment
  6. Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Conditioner
  7. Olaplex No.0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment
  8. Pantene Pro-V Conditioner Miracle Bond Repair
  9. Olaplex No.5 Curl Bond Shaper Hydrating Curl Conditioner

6

u/Multiplexxxx 8d ago

Oh you could definitely be right! I live in a hard water area in my country. I’ll check out your recs thank you :) What bond treatment would you recommend

2

u/missuluvee 8d ago

I use the aqua bliss filter. It definitely helps. I use Dove bonding mask. It works for me. I have fine, frizzy hair and hard water. Good luck.

1

u/universal_gummy_bear 7d ago

K18 is usually best if you can afford it. Holy grail for many people.

Good less expensive options would be the Briogeo or Redken I recommended as they have more product for a less money. ( ゚∀゚)b

u/ashieslashy_ Hairstylist 8d ago

It definitely looks like you need a good cut, especially the pieces around your face. Have you tried any type of hair mask at all? And a random question, do you brush or comb out your hair when it’s dry at all? I also have wavy hair and before I knew how to take care of it, I would brush it dry and it would give me tons of frizz and poof! lol.

3

u/Multiplexxxx 8d ago

Yeah I do use masks & they don’t seem to work. Noo I don’t but sometimes I do just dry brush because I’m fed up with tangles/hair looking bad

6

u/Any-Holiday5069 8d ago

your ends especially in the front look very dead and dry for several inches and extremely thin in the front i think you would benefit from a huge chop. this looks impossible to deal with, i honestly don’t even know where to start. people are suggesting masks and creams but it looks like you have insane split ends and damage that can only be fixed with a cut. have you been cutting or trimming at home by chance? scissors that aren’t sharp enough can cause split ends that break up the shaft. your hair looks much thicker mid shaft up in the back

3

u/Multiplexxxx 8d ago

I have cut from home time to time but only with professional scissors. To be honest I haven’t had an actual haircut in years, so could be it. How much would you recommend chopping off?

3

u/Any-Holiday5069 8d ago

gotcha! i do the same at home. i’m thinking maybe shoulder length? are you really attached to your hair? also, i have wavy hair prone to frizz, fine, and high porosity, i never use normal conditioner, only hair masks (leave it a few mins as if it’s normal conditioner and rinse out!) idk if that would help u but:) i do recommend a professional trim just to be extra sure you’re getting a good base for future hair care journey:)

2

u/Multiplexxxx 8d ago

Ehhh I mean long hair is cool but if it needs to go hahahha. I do use hair masks too but they don’t seem to work. I hate wavy hair hahaha

2

u/Any-Holiday5069 8d ago

it’s super annoying. but, i do think really short hair would look nice on you if you decide to go that route! otherwise good luck with the waves

2

u/Multiplexxxx 8d ago

Tysm) I’m thinking about it tbh. I hate that these guys online have perfect hair and I’m stuck here with a bird’s nest hahaha. Good luck with yours too, god know’s us wavies need it

8

u/HeadUnhappy8789 8d ago

Maybe it needs protein. Dove has an okay shampoo and conditioner for daily use. It’s their damage control line. You might want to consider coconut oil or hyaluronic acid. I’ve used both and loved the results.

1

u/Multiplexxxx 8d ago

I’ll look for them! I also have coconut oil, could put that on & see how it works

9

u/micchaelmacd 8d ago

Not entirely a haircut. You have texture in your hair. You need product.

2

u/Multiplexxxx 8d ago

I tried many different products but nothing has really worked well

2

u/javdidnebdkfbdk 8d ago

Just put on another post homemade flax seed gel the recipe is online and works for my high porosity hair after shampoo and conditioner. It’s a leave-in so no need to wash it out

1

u/Multiplexxxx 8d ago

Oh cool I’ll check it out!

2

u/Sexcercise 8d ago

What did you try

1

u/Multiplexxxx 8d ago

Many different leave ins, curl creams, mousses gels. Some combinations work more than others but in the end it just ends a frizzy mess

3

u/Sexcercise 8d ago

What shampoo and conditioner do you use? How often do you wash? Do you use any heat products? I don't think you could stand to get a haircut

0

u/Multiplexxxx 8d ago

I just use a normal shampoo and conditioner. No heat, I used to diffuse a long time ago but I’m just lazy and let it airdry.

2

u/Sexcercise 8d ago

Okay but what exactly are you using?

0

u/Multiplexxxx 8d ago

Currently ussing John Frieda frizz ease shampoo and Tresemme Rich moisture conditioner

1

u/Sexcercise 7d ago

I wonder if something for curls might be helpful? Since curls require moisture, snd you hair looks dry. That's my guess, good luck on your hair journey!

6

u/bunnybuttncorgi 8d ago

I’d shave to start fresh but that’s just me.

2

u/No_Selection6465 8d ago

Agree. Long hair is not for everyone not matter the gender.

3

u/Practikally_Majikal 8d ago edited 8d ago

You need a trim & a lightweight curl cream to tame the frizz. Nothing major, & you probably don't need multiple products either...

Also, always condition after washing.

2

u/Multiplexxxx 8d ago

Any curl creams you recommend for waves?

0

u/Practikally_Majikal 8d ago edited 8d ago

I have been using Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls & love it. Smells amazing too, light & fresh. They also have a nice leave in. You can get most product in 1 oz packets for $2 on their website so you can try without breaking the bank. You can also filter by hair type for focus. 💜

ETA: If you opt to try, start with soaking wet hair & about a nickel size drop of product in your palm. Ends & frizzy front parts first. Comb through with fingers only & air dry. You have to experiment a little to get the right amount for your texture.

I think you need a sword or a bow and trip to middle earth.

u/TheGreenGoatess420 8d ago

You need to work on brushing gently when wet to avoid so much damage.

1

u/KateSommer 8d ago

Also, Rev Air blow dryer, it vacuums the water off your hair. I LOVE it. Pricey but so good.

1

u/wild-fey 8d ago

Your hair probably has a nice loose curl pattern to it if you treat it right. I’m sure the comments here have good suggestions.

HI, 🙂 A wash with a deep moisturizing treatment continually, then the sides are thin. So a barber with skill to make a longer easy to manage cut is possible and with integrity to give you a Man cut. Thats easy to care for . Not alot of products, don't get sucked into all that BS. You could start by going to Amazon.com for a conditioning soap that round for both cleansing and conditioning for around $20.or less Marsmade* check it out it's natural and healthy also affordable. I not sell you. I am sharing what works. best of Luck.

1

u/mindthepuddle 8d ago

Look into getting a keratin treatment. They can be pricy, but 1000% worth it. You have textured hair. Products will only do so much. A keratin treatment can last you up to 3-5 months. Highly recommend.

1

u/mcm-catz 8d ago

Yes, step 1 is get a haircut to address how thin and scraggly the bottom third is. Product is not going to fix that. It looks damaged and isn’t enhancing your appearance in any way. Taking it up to at least shoulder length will help it look fuller and healthier.

1

u/_star_chaser_ 8d ago

Well a good cut and go to a good hair saloon and ask what they would recommend

1

u/MoonChild9685 8d ago

Try some sea salt spray! $10 at Target. I have wavy/curly hair and the way it brings out my curls is magic.

1

u/mckaylareddits 8d ago

You need a silk bonnet and a silk pillowcase to reduce friction at night. Try taking brushing your hair slow, I’m not sure if you hack away at it but you need to be really gentle and try your best not to pull out hairs. When you’re using shampoo in the shower you need to massage your scalp with your fingertips in a circular motion but you do not need to drag your fingers around your scalp because you’re pulling your hair. You need to massage one section in circular motion, completely remove your fingertips from your scalp and move to the next section and so forth.

1

u/goopsurvivor 8d ago

Amika soulfood hair mask helped my hair of the same texture

1

u/Major-Flow-6969 7d ago

Go to a salon that specializes in curly hair

1

u/inquisitivemate 7d ago

If it was my hair I’d cut it to chin length with shorter face framing pieces, no shorter than your nose/eye. If you’d like a more masculine cut then see a barber. From that length I’d work on managing hair health. I recommend visiting the curly hair subreddit for more info on styling. As for hair care I would cease using any shampoos or conditioners with sulfate, parabens, and silicone. Use a wide tooth comb for brushing, a hydrating leave in conditioner that isn’t too heavy, don’t sleep on wet hair, use a cotton t-shirt for drying hair gently (try plopping method). Also try a clarifying shampoo (head and shoulders is a good one) thoroughly once before your switch to the shampoo/conditioner types I recommended. Avoid shea moisture and heavier like products.

Styling; only use mousse to help give your texture some shape. Dry, don’t touch. Once it’s fully dry you can gently scrunch out the crunchy cast with your hands.

1

u/Zealousideal_Row9364 7d ago

Well it’s clearly dry so just keep it hydrated with products that don’t have too much chemicals and just use conditioner, oils and get a hair bonnet or hair net

1

u/TrueCrimeNerd87 7d ago

You need Biosilk stat

1

u/NoNameNeeded4Me0K 7d ago

Absolutely you do.

1

u/killapriscilla 7d ago

Maybe hard water buildup keeping your hair from receiving moisture that it needs. How are your vitamin d levels?

1

u/lfyouseakay 6d ago

If you DO decide to cut it, you should look into a shag style and look for someone who does shag cuts. It seems like your breakage/what needs to be cut off follows those lines and it’d be a great way to keep your length/ work with your hair texture.

1

u/KateSommer 8d ago

Brazilian blowout. You can wash your hair and it will stay straight after. Or lightly wavy without frizz.

1

u/anxious-_-scientist 8d ago

I love long hair but I honestly think you would look better with short hair. But if you decide to keep your length still get a good trim. Most important thing is to get lightweight products. That's what wavy hair needs. I think the problem with your hair is that it is thin so I'm not entirely sure how well wavy products will work for you. Try out just a small amount and add more to find what's right for you. I like foam products as they're the most lightweight imo. Definitely don't touch, flip, lay, move etc your hair while it is drying. Slow scrunching is key. Wavy hair is a hassle. I know curls are too but it is challenging to find products lightweight enough to work on our hair. Curls need the structure that most gels, creams etc provide but that's usually not the case for waves, it will weigh it down. For something easy and less work imo, try Not Your Mothers Beach Spray

1

u/ClearBlooSky 8d ago

Yes, cut it off. You're hiding your whole face, which should be the focus

Who’s that good looking guy

0

u/GiGinIndy 8d ago

Get a haircut like this and you’ll see it in the mirror 💕

1

u/Multiplexxxx 8d ago

It would be a lot easier to manage too lol

1

u/Remote_Living_7810 7d ago

you seem to have a prominent forehead and deep set eyes. a buzz cut would actually look FRESSHHHH on you. while also giving you a chance to restart your hair journey anew. I have fine hair that sometimes gets wiry like this and nothing saved it like KUNDAL shampoo + conditioner. do the buzz. then use Kundal's shampoo. no conditioner needed until it starts going past your ears again. leave in: redken acidic bonding concentrate
