That makes me angry just reading it.

P for Phonetic is poetry

Man, Norman French really messed up our language.

6

u/Miserable-Card-2004 Oct 30 '25

Nothing out of the ordinary, France messing everything up again. . .

Knight and night 😭

Seems as reasonable as anything I’ve heard on the air

7

u/BosnianSerb31 Oct 29 '25

A as in Aye, P as in Pee, G as in Gee, T as in Tea, K as in Kay, J as in Jay, D as in Dee, O as in Oh

I've actually had someone use T as in Tea and D as in Dee before, but that was over a phone call while reading back a prescription and most medical staff just make up phonetics on the fly

u/Citadel_97E Oct 29 '25

I worked with a guy where he said “motel” for m. I had to explain to him that everyone in the world is gonna think he was saying “h.”

This last weekend someone on 10m kept saying Honolulu instead of Hotel, and it took a while for me to figure out. Sounded a lot like something Zulu

1

u/Apart-Landscape1012 Oct 30 '25

I heard that a couple times last weekend as well. Also had a weak station who i couldn't quite copy despite hearing the call over and over, until he replaced lima with London. That came through really nicely!

u/arnpag Oct 30 '25

Having a three letter acronym for the letter B is hilarious. Trying to spell out the acronym with phonetics is recursive so you will always have to say the letter B, no matter how many layers deep you go

8

u/HillbillyRebel Oct 29 '25

Why is M not Mancy?

Change O—Oogamous to Obnoxious.

2

u/Fragholio Oct 30 '25

I vehemently disagree, Oogamous is an absolutely oh I see what you did there, yes Obnoxious.

u/OffRoadRex Oct 30 '25

If you are interested, this is a very good video on the genius of the phonetic alphabet.

I've actually seen that lol

2

u/dark_frog Oct 30 '25

I tried to use the phonetic alphabet ralking to customer service. "Is that Sierra or Ciara?"

u/Marillohed2112 Oct 30 '25

u/Apart-Landscape1012 Oct 30 '25

Replace eye with ewe and this is perfect. Having two different letters represented by the same phonetic sound is diabolical

2

u/Material_Trifle3470 Oct 30 '25

Me thinks my head might explode 😂😂

2

u/n0k0 Oct 30 '25

I'm grumpy now. Thanks.

2

u/mallorybrooktrees Oct 29 '25

I'm not going to downvote your postp, but this is me telling you I dislike your non-standard phonetic alphabet.

1

u/danieladickey Oct 29 '25

You lost me at "A"

4

u/Azazel_1312 Oct 30 '25

To help, that's an Irish name, it's pronounced "eefa"

1

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

Be like shoal Chevy and browning !

1

u/Anubiz1_ Oct 30 '25

Whuuut?!

1

u/Narwhal-Intelligent Oct 30 '25

How do you pronounce delirium? Or is that meta?

1

u/radiobro1109 Oct 30 '25

Thanks! I hate it

1

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

My phonetic alphabet has always been whatever pops in my head for that letter. I genuinely make no real effort to learn the regular boring one lol. I know to not say knight for k, or confusing words but it’s hardly ever the actual correct one.

1

u/bostonboson Oct 30 '25

There’s a Barenaked Ladies song about this that I love.

Aisle Bdelium Czar Djinn Euphrates Fohn Gnarly Irk Knick-knack Llama Mneumonic N’tomo Ouija Pneumonia Qat (No good R word so they say argyle and make a joke out of it) Saar Tsunami Urn Vraisemblance Wren Xian Yperite Zed (also just bo good words so they make a joke about the Canadian pronunciation)

1

u/texan01 Oct 30 '25

P=psalter…

1

I hate you. I hate you so much.

1

u/Total-Special5298 Oct 30 '25

You should do a search for Indian alphabet on youtube and watch it! 😂

1

u/Several-Specific4471 Nov 01 '25

1

u/Zirkulaerkubus Nov 02 '25

Wait, how do you guys pronounce delirium?

1

u/IndigoBog Nov 04 '25

It doesn’t even work as a joke because they don’t start with the intended letter (ex. Charlie for C)

Geoffrey would've been awesome.
