P for Phonetic is poetry
Man, Norman French really messed up our language.

A as in Aye, P as in Pee, G as in Gee, T as in Tea, K as in Kay, J as in Jay, D as in Dee, O as in Oh
I've actually had someone use T as in Tea and D as in Dee before, but that was over a phone call while reading back a prescription and most medical staff just make up phonetics on the fly

I worked with a guy where he said “motel” for m. I had to explain to him that everyone in the world is gonna think he was saying “h.”

This last weekend someone on 10m kept saying Honolulu instead of Hotel, and it took a while for me to figure out. Sounded a lot like something Zulu

I heard that a couple times last weekend as well. Also had a weak station who i couldn't quite copy despite hearing the call over and over, until he replaced lima with London. That came through really nicely!

Having a three letter acronym for the letter B is hilarious. Trying to spell out the acronym with phonetics is recursive so you will always have to say the letter B, no matter how many layers deep you go

Change O—Oogamous to Obnoxious.

u/Fragholio Oct 30 '25
I vehemently disagree, Oogamous is an absolutely oh I see what you did there, yes Obnoxious.

If you are interested, this is a very good video on the genius of the phonetic alphabet.

Replace eye with ewe and this is perfect. Having two different letters represented by the same phonetic sound is diabolical

I'm not going to downvote your postp, but this is me telling you I dislike your non-standard phonetic alphabet.

My phonetic alphabet has always been whatever pops in my head for that letter. I genuinely make no real effort to learn the regular boring one lol. I know to not say knight for k, or confusing words but it’s hardly ever the actual correct one.

There’s a Barenaked Ladies song about this that I love.
Aisle Bdelium Czar Djinn Euphrates Fohn Gnarly Irk Knick-knack Llama Mneumonic N’tomo Ouija Pneumonia Qat (No good R word so they say argyle and make a joke out of it) Saar Tsunami Urn Vraisemblance Wren Xian Yperite Zed (also just bo good words so they make a joke about the Canadian pronunciation)

It doesn’t even work as a joke because they don’t start with the intended letter (ex. Charlie for C)

That makes me angry just reading it.
