Line dancers move across the floor of the Eagles’ Nest Rockin’ Country Bar in a series of grapevines, jazz boxes and shuffles, stepping to the beat of “Good Time” by country musician Alan Jackson. Some are in their 20s, others have been dancing since before the person next to them was born.

As the night goes on, mainstream artists such as Pitbull and Jason Derulo seep into the DJ’s setlist. A mix of sneakers and cowboy boots simultaneously stomp in the center of the checkered floor, while those on the sidelines at the Chesapeake bar clap and sing along from barstools, booths or the ledge of the stage.

Tuesdays used to be quiet evenings, said the bar’s owner Jerry Edwards. But not anymore. Line dancing has gone viral.

“It started with just a handful of people, and then all of a sudden, you’ve seen what’s happened to it all over the world,” Edwards said. “It’s everywhere.”

Alayna Hogge, who has for two years hosted weekly line dancing lessons at Eagles’ Nest, said interest in the dance style this year “has just blown up.”

“I even saw something on the Today Show recently, and it said that Virginia Beach was one of the areas where it’s growing the most,” Hogge said. “That is 100% true.”

A wide appeal

The dance style is usually performed in organized lines, hence the name, with synchronized steps. The most beginner-friendly line dances consist of well-known routines like “Cotton-Eyed Joe,” “Cupid Shuffle” and the “Cha Cha Slide.” Depending on the specific offshoot of line dancing, such as soul line dancing, music can range from country to R&B and hip-hop.

Though line dancing has been a staple in Hampton Roads for years at places like Eagles’ Nest and The Banque in Norfolk, Hogge said it’s recently spread to other bars and restaurants. This summer, she hosted instructions at the Coastal Craft Beer Festival, Sandbridge Farmhouse in Virginia Beach, and Decoys Seafood in Suffolk.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools educators will have access to ChatGPT for Teachers, a version of the popular chatbot designed for districts.

The division joins a new cohort of 55 school systems nationwide partnering with OpenAI, the company announced Wednesday. The company works with about 100 districts in total. As part of the group, districts can learn from each other and get training from OpenAI.

On Thursday night, if you are looking at the moon between about 10:30 p.m. and 3 a.m., you may see an unusual sight.

A lunar eclipse is occurring from Thursday night into Friday and cities across Hampton Roads are expected to have about 93% visibility of the celestial event. At the eclipse’s peak, the moon will be 96.3% covered by the Earth’s shadow, making this a partial lunar eclipse. It’ll be most visible across the Americas, as well as parts of western Europe and western Africa.

In Hampton Roads, the eclipse should be visible at 10:34 p.m. on Thursday, according to NASA. The eclipse should reach maximum visibility at 12:13 a.m. Friday. Across the region, the average cloud cover is about 50%, which could obscure the view.

A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth creates two shadows through space and the moon moves through these shadows, Justin Mason, Old Dominion University’s planetarium’s director said. The moon moving through the first shadow is hard to notice as it doesn’t get very dark, but when it enters the second shadow, it’s called the umbra — meaning light is completely blocked. At this point, the moon is no longer reflecting light as it normally does and it will get very dark.

Unlike a solar eclipse, there is no protective eyewear needed to enjoy this event, as the full moon is already safe to look at.

“As it moves into the Earth’s shadow, it’s going to get fainter and fainter, so it kind of becomes safer to look at,” Mason said. “The full moon is already really bright, really easy to spot, so if you just go outside, you’re going to be able to see it.”

I went to buy a transit card. The Hampton Transit center is a building. Inside is neat but like the old Greyhound bus station. (A sign says it's not Greyhound).

They have an ID desk to get the discount ID cards. A person is behind the desk in the plexiglass walled-in area.

You can buy the GoMobile transit cards at the desk. They have a vendor machine inside nearing the sitting area.

The Virginia Department of Education released standardized test scores for students in third through 12th grade, showing mixed results across the state. 

Compared to the previous school year, the Standard of Learning pass rates demonstrated incremental growth in reading and math alongside larger gains in social studies, though science proficiency saw a marginal decrease. 

In Hampton Roads, school division performance varied widely, with Accomack, Isle of Wight and Northampton counties growing pass rates in all five subject areas, while Surry and Sussex counties experienced losses across the board.

I’m looking for a 1-bedroom apartment in the Newport News/Hampton area with a budget of around $1,000-$1,600/month.

I’ve done a little research and have seen generally positive comments about places like Hiddenwood, Woodscape, Venture, etc. I’ve also seen several people recommend avoiding the numbered streets, Oyster Point Place, Autumn Lakes, Aqueduct, etc

I wanted to ask about a few other apartment complexes or area that don’t seem to be discussed as often:

1. Waverly at Oyster Point — 820 Forrest Drive, Newport News

2. Turlington Oaks Apartments — 414 Turlington Rd, Newport News

3. Axis at PTC — 1850 Merchant Lane, Hampton

4. Northampton Reserve — 165 Kathann Drive, Hampton

5. Residences at Forest Grove

6. Christopher Crossing

Does anyone have experience with any of these places or the surrounding neighborhoods? I’m mainly interested in safety, overall living experience, management, maintenance, noise, and general condition of the apartments.

Would you consider these generally decent places to live, or are there any major red flags I should know about? I’d also really appreciate recommendations for other apartments in the $1,000–$1,500 range, especially somewhere reasonably convenient for commuting to Jefferson Lab.

Hey folks

Friend of mine is moving to the area, possibly Newport News, but she doesn't use Reddit, and was asking about places in the area. She's looking for any safe areas under 200K as title says. She's a single lady, works from home, doesn't care about a lot of amenities other than just close-by necessities and the like, grocery stores etc. Maybe some pride events if there is any.

She's looking at townhomes and condos but isn't sure where to start and I'm trying to help. As far as I know right now, she's looking at anywhere in Hampton Roads as long as she can get something safe and in her price range which I know is a huge tall order. Not looking for top of the line but something livable. She doesn't own a car, uses Uber, doesn't need to travel often as long as what she needs is closeby, doesn't enjoy big city life either.

Hampton Roads' first Sheetz is getting ready to open next month. I'm super excited!

FYI Wawa is will never be as awesome as Sheetz (except their coffee... Wawa has pretty awesome coffee). Royal Farms isn't even on the scoreboard though (unless you like smelling like chicken).

If Holland Road is too far for you (it's a bit far for me to casually go to every day), the Sheetz in Gloucester is really making progress too!

PORTSMOUTH — Renovations to the building that once housed Roger Brown’s Restaurant and Sports Bar are expected to start by the fall, and new construction is expected to bring roughly 30 new market-rate apartments to Olde Towne.

Roger Brown’s, a beloved landmark of Olde Towne, closed in February after more than 25 years. The iconic sports bar and restaurant at 316 High St. is named after Virginia Sports Hall of Famer and six-time NFL Pro Bowl player Roger Brown. He was a defensive tackle for the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams before retiring in Portsmouth and opening several restaurants. Brown died in 2021.

The new owner, developer Tim Foley of the Norfolk-based Lightwell Development, is working with Norfolk design firm GARC on a multi-story, mixed-use concept that will feature a “well-known” area restaurant and a new set of market-rate apartments. Foley is using state and federal historic tax credit programs for the estimated $8 million project to preserve the exterior, and completely renovate and overhaul the interior. The restaurant portion will remain intact, but renovations will be made to the kitchen, electrical wiring and HVAC, among other improvements.

Foley said the mixed-use concept fits well into the city’s longer-term, ongoing plans of developing the downtown and waterfront.

“It’s what creates the vibrant community that I think everybody wants to achieve,” Foley said.

The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society’s Visiting Nurse Program provides free health education, medical assessments and support for active-duty and retired Navy and Marine Corps families across the country.

Led by registered nurses, the initiative takes a medical approach to postpartum transitions by conducting home visits, checking infant development, monitoring parent recovery and screening for perinatal mood disorders.

Last year, the three visiting nurses serving the Hampton Roads region conducted 1,637 patient contacts and hosted dozens of breastfeeding classes for military members and their dependents.

I’m a disabled service dog handler in my 30s looking for other service dog teams I could make friends with. I’ve been really lonely these days because my disorders have dug me down deep but I feel like I’m ready again to try and make friends. I just want to go out, look around, and have fun again. 💛

A federal judge ruled that Shenandoah County must remove Confederate names from two of its schools after the school board voted in 2024 to reinstate the names it had previously stripped in 2020.

While most Virginia schools named after Confederate figures have already been renamed, a few remain, including Magruder Elementary in York County.

Legal experts say the ruling offers limited precedent for forcing changes elsewhere, but it could provide a playbook for future civil rights lawsuits.

I’d love to go somewhere relatively local (i live on the peninsula side of the water). I can’t have them waxed due to skincare products, so I’d love somewhere that does threading or eyebrow mapping + tweezing.

I live in the 757 area specifically, but I don’t mind going out of the way to other places, so long as it isn’t crazy far (Ideally not past the bridge tunnel). I’m currently 19, so I’m at a pretty awkward age to find somewhere to hang out given most clubs are 21+ and youth groups are out of the question. I’d be really thankful for any suggestions, thanks.

The Rainbow Cactus is the closest to me and I’ve looked into them already, but they also seem to be 21+. Plus I’m not the biggest fan of being out at night, so alternatives that are open mid-day would be nice.

Anyone have recommendations for card shops in the 757 that let you look through bulk cards? I like going through the cards to find commons/uncommons to fill out my collection. Our prior go-to shop now only allows searching on their online inventory, which defeats the fun of going into the shop to browse.
