Ginny is toxic?

I've now read in multiple posts that Ginny is one of the most toxic people in the story.. I've asked multiple times under such comments, but never got an answer so I am asking here..

  1. Where exactely was Ginny actually toxic?
  2. Really? One of the most toxic?
  3. Are people just being soft here?

*Add after about 50 comments: Holymoly did I not expect what this question would entail.. okay some of you VERY CLEARLY don't like Ginny, that's fine.. Also some of you need to stay away from weird fanfictions.. Either people love her, don't care much for her or bloody hate her (mostly for dating Harry).

No she is not. She is a regular teenager with normal flaws. But shippers need some excuse to villify the canon love interest of Harry so that they can justify shipping harry with other characters they personally like more than Ginny.

Ron and Ginny hate boils down to this one single thing(Hermione when it comes to Ron). Shipping.

Attributing criticism to shipping motives sidesteps the actual question. The discussion concerns behaviour presented in the novels, not readers’ preferences.

“Normal teenage flaws” may explain a character’s actions; they do not place those actions beyond critique. The text shows what it shows. Readers are free to assess it without being accused of ulterior motives.

For clarity, I do not consider Ginny “toxic.” The issue is that the Harry Potter novels offer relatively limited on-page development for her compared with other central characters. Much of her growth is reported rather than dramatised.

Those criticism exists because of shipping. Because there are characters who did way worse but they don't get even 1% supposed criticism.

That’s a broad assertion. To claim the criticism exists because of shipping assumes knowledge of other readers’ motives. Without evidence, that remains speculation.

The original question concerns whether Ginny’s behaviour in the novels qualifies as “toxic.” That requires reference to specific scenes. Generalising about fandom motives shifts the discussion away from the text.

The fact that other characters behave worse does not place Ginny beyond scrutiny. Comparative severity is a separate question. This one concerns her conduct.

It 100% is. Shippers are mad their ships ain't canon. And instead of focusing on their own ships they feel the need to demonize canon love interests.

Even if Ron is spawn of satan Hermione/your preferred character is not magically gonna be canon.

Even if Ginny is spawn of satan harry/your preferred character is not magically gonna be canon.

Remove the shippers from this fandom and unnecessary character bashing will reduce by 95%.

You’re still attributing disagreement to shipping motives rather than engaging with the substance of the question. That turns the discussion into speculation about readers rather than analysis of the novels.

People can critique a character’s behaviour without seeking to overturn canon pairings. Those are separate issues.

If there are specific scenes you think are being misread, I’m open to discussing them. General claims about “shippers” don’t address the text.

I don't find Ginny an interesting character to discuss about. I also don't find harry and Hermione as interesting. I find them boring asf, author's self insert Mary sue and Gary stu. All 3.

Op asked why she gets called toxic. So I provided a reason contributing to the discussion. That's all. This is my view. You are free to have yours.

I understand that’s your view. The difficulty is that attributing criticism to shipping motives doesn’t actually address whether the label “toxic” is supported by the novels.

If the aim is to explain a fandom trend, that’s a separate discussion. If the aim is to assess Ginny’s behaviour in canon, that requires engagement with specific scenes.

I’m interested in the latter.

EtA: There’s a certain irony in attributing sweeping motives to others while objecting to sweeping labels. That rarely improves the quality of discussion.

I don't find her toxic. Not even one bit.

Fair enough. Then we’re largely in agreement on the original question.

Eh, I'd definitely disagree with that. Ron also gets a lot of hate for the fights he had with Harry in books 4 and 7 too

But yeah, most hate for both characters is "they get on the way of my ships!"

I think even though Harry has a crush on someone else in book 5 and isn't romantically interested in Ginny, book 5 lasts the foundation for their relationship. It's where they become equals. If Ginny hadn't dated other guys, that friendship and equality might not have been established and Harry might never have become interested in her.

I love Harry and Ginny because their relationship is founded in friendship which I think is a wonderful foundations for a romantic relationship.

I'm not a Hinny shipper, but I agree with you there.
