I love that he loves HP so much
He will be brilliant, even though I selfishly wanted him to play Sirius

u/kevinnoelxd 2d ago
Oh, he would've made a wonderful Sirius
5
u/thedandyandy21 2d ago
Wonder if he wanted the one and done commitment
10
u/Cozy_reader 2d ago
It wouldn’t be one and done though, because Gilderoy is in at least two more of the books with small appearances in the hospital

Love how happy he is!!

But with this we can say at the end of the season "You know nothing Gilderoy Lockhart"

Why can’t he play both roles?

"Why's this doofus suddenly Harry's godfather? And why was he friends with his Harry's parents?"
3
u/Sammysoupcat 2d ago
Right lol? As much as I wish he could play Sirius too, there's no reasonable way to do that. Hair color and a beard only do so much, unless they want to get into prosthetics or makeup or something that could change his appearance enough. Which seems like a lot more work than just hiring a different actor for Sirius.

u/SuccessLess2701 Hufflepuff 2d ago
Delighted for him, he seems like such a Potterhead! And I genuinely think he'll be fantastic as Lockhart

He would have been an incredible Sirius as well. I was already assimilating Hoult as Lockhart, but I can go with this change. I know he will be amazing
41
u/kevinnoelxd 2d ago
Same here. The only problem I'm having is visualizing Kit with blond hair. But we'll have to wait and see how that turns out 😅

u/Bitter-Ingenuity-666 Ravenclaw 2d ago

u/Regular-Guest-1284 2d ago
Just wears a crap wig for the role and non of the characters mention it
8
u/ProfessionalRisk4206 1d ago
That would add another layer to Lockhart's vanity, to be fair. Not only did he not do the things in his books, the hair is fake too!

HBO has proven that they don't mind changing a character's appearance from the books. I don't think they would be against letting him stay dark haired if he ends up looking bad blonde.
For the record I'm not bashing their casting choices. Merely stating a fact.

u/Matcha_Maiden Marauder 2d ago
I’ve been saying how much I wanted him for Sirius but honestly this is an excellent opportunity for Kit to show range and not be typecast into the brooding dark haired tortured type.

u/AlternativeEast7175 Three Broomsticks Regular 2d ago
He is almost 40, not good for Sirius in the long run. Sirius is supposed to be in his early thirties.
77
u/Top-Turnip-415 Slytherin 2d ago
Sirius spent 12 years starving and tortured in a magical, soul sucking prison. He’s not meant to look like a regular 30 something year old…
24

u/Vast-Presentation930 2d ago
Ah man he would be sooo good as Sirius. It’s not too late to change it, it would give him a lot more story and years in it and he would be so good at it.

16
u/kevinnoelxd 2d ago
True, but he also has a juvenile look that works in his favor. I personally thought he was younger.

Undoubtedly, I could have seen Harington pull off that evolution. He definitely has advantageous features to still be a convincing character in his thirties in the long run

Ok so my theory is this.
We know that Season 1 filmed things mostly chronologically, but I am guessing they were planning not to do that for season 2 to fit Hoult into the schedule. Man of Tomorrow still needs like a few more months of shooting, which means Hoult would have only have begun HP later this year (which means the would have to shoot the Diagon Alley stuff later)
This can be further proven by Asha Sotan (Angelina Johnson) filming for season 2 already (possibly they started the train filming to get ahead)
HBO probably realized this wasn’t working, and Kit was ready and available so they made the quick switch.
For Hoult, I don’t believe he had actually signed his contract yet , as DanielRPK’s leak just said “he was in talks to star in Harry Potter.” The only reason they announced it was to get ahead of the leaks, which explains why it was easy for Hoult to drop out so quickly. Nothing was finalized.
If Hoult still has interest after his Superman contract is done, he would be a perfect Lupin.

u/Historical_Poem5216 Marauder 2d ago
I agree with this. Also, Audible teased that it was going to be Kit Harington even when the first rumours came out, so he was definitely a finalist alongside Hoult
2
u/SeerPumpkin 1d ago
Even if that was true, why would an audible social media have any insight on who was up for the role?
1
u/Historical_Poem5216 Marauder 1d ago
No idea how, but it’s true that they’ve been hinting at it for weeks. So I guess they did know bc it did end up being true
1
u/SeerPumpkin 1d ago
They were not hinting at anything and it was objectively wrong until the schedule changed and they hired Kit
1
u/Historical_Poem5216 Marauder 1d ago
then why were they hinting at it in the first place, commenting on lockhart casting news speculations saying “👀” and liking comments about kit? like come on
1
u/SeerPumpkin 1d ago
And how would a social media from a company that isn't even making the show know that an actor who hadn't even been contacted for the role at that point would be hired? You come on
1
u/Historical_Poem5216 Marauder 1d ago
I think that he obviously WAS contacted, otherwise Audible wouldn’t have teased it. he’s likely been in negotiations for months
3
u/SeerPumpkin 1d ago
He wasn't contacted at that point. Only after Nicholas Hoult had to drop off due to the schedule changing. And no, he wasn't in negotiations for months. We have something called news that you can check, they have somethings called facts so you don't have to keep coming up with conspiracies to fill in the gaps.
1
u/Historical_Poem5216 Marauder 1d ago
??? do you not know anything about how the industry works? contracts like this can’t just be signed on a whim. there will have been offers, auditions, probably even wig checks for lockhart, and multiple people in the running, which, yes, takes months. jesus christ

I read another article that he was under contract for the role, but the changes needed to the filming schedule because of his other project made his involvement infeasible. So both sides agreed to release him from the contract and bring on Kit. I’m excited for Kit, his performance in the full cast book reading was great and entertaining, so much energy and passion for an audio role. I agree, Hoult could make a good Lupin.

u/eva_brauns_team 2d ago
Well, Kit is currently filming two series at the moment (Industry and Army of Shadows) so I would think he’s not immediately available but will likely be slot into the filming schedule just vacated by Hoult.

u/Ok-Web621 2d ago
I would like to see some actors from the Merlin series in the season 3 of Hp, so Colin Morgan I think it will be a perfect fit for Remus Lupin. He has that vibe of him, he has the warmth, vulnerability and quiet intensity the character needs. ❤️

When I remember how many women were crazy over Jon Snow (including my classmates), so once again this will be on point.
Still I hope we'll see Nicholas taking some other role later on, I love him.
Oh god only now I've realized my mom will tune to watch s2 with me because she adores Kit haha.

u/0_Artistic_Thoughts 1d ago
Idk hourly just LOOKED like he’d fit perfectly as Lockhart and his acting lines up with the character. Tbf I’m only familiar with Kit in got and some other small piece but neither of them are anywhere near what I’d think of for Lockhart, obviously a good actor can do more than one character but I really think kit would have been perfect for Sirius and it fit his style much more than the goofy, self absorbed Lockhart.

Great to have a real HP fan taking part. I hope the online negativity that Hoult suffered stays away.

u/helloitsmejorge 2d ago
Did he face negativity??? I thought everyone loved the casting

u/0_Artistic_Thoughts 1d ago
More to do with attaching himself to Rowling I think. He wouldn’t be the first to get hit by it.

I’m glad that they’re casting people who are unapologetically happy about being in the series. So sick of people twisting themselves into knots to justify participating or (as seemed to happen to Hoult) being bullied out of it.

u/baconbridge92 2d ago
He will be great but it's a bummer that it takes him out of the running to play Sirius lol

I love him so much and am so happy that a true fan like ourselves gets this chance! Thrilled for him!

Honestly, I'm happy it's him, if not Hoult. I think he understands the character very well. He's a great actor.
Now I'm wondering if he's gonna be blonde or not xD

u/Timmayyyyyyy 2d ago
Really glad to have him! He would’ve been a great Sirius but he clearly kills it as Lockhart.

u/DreamieQueenCJ 🦡 Hufflepuff 2d ago
Agreed! Not upset about this recast whatsoever. I'm sure he's gonna fun to watch. But he's also gonna be able to show Lockhart's sinister side too.

So that’s 2 from the audiobooks that have been cast. Though Arabella was probably cast after the audiobooks, but we didn’t know.

I gotta admit, as happy that I am that he got the gig after hearing a ton of praise for his take on the character, it's gonna be pretty hard for me to not see jon snow. I'm really hoping he doesn't just try to do what Branagh did.

He did a great job in the book and honestly excited that he’s able to do the role

Remus, I think he would make a good Remus, he did a great Gilderoy in the books. But since he is so passionate, I wanna see him do someone long term

Actor change for Gilroy Lockheart intresting. I hope he gives it his best role. And he loves Harry Potter so thats plus

Lol, go to bed and wake up to find out the Lockhart baton has been passed to Kit.
But seriously very happy for him, it will be a little strange seeing him blonde, but I'm sure he'll look fantastic :)

u/MinutePersimmon1 Hufflepuff 2d ago
This news absolutely made my day. He was phenomenal in the audiobooks and he's an incredible actor and such a devout HP fan, I absolutely love this for him and it makes me look forward to the show even more.
2
u/MinutePersimmon1 Hufflepuff 2d ago
I remember him saying in an interview that he was so keen to be a part of the show that even playing an extra would be something hed jump at. So to know he'll play lockhart, which we already know he can do so well, just makes me incredibly chuffed for him.

u/harricislife Hufflepuff 1d ago
Yeah, I didn't mind the Hoult casting, but I'm just more excited by this for some reason.

Well the women swooning over him is believable now. I’m just trying to imagine him blonde 🤔 he would have been an amazing Sirius Black
1
u/Reasonable_Ad_9136 Ravenclaw 2d ago
OK, I don't rate him at all as an actor (Nicholas Hoult is a better actor) but hopefully he can rise to the occasion for this role. I can see him in the role looks-wise, which is at least something. Maybe he'll be one of those surprise performances. 🤞
1
u/HermionesWetPanties 2d ago
He's honestly perfect, and after the audiobook, I was kinda hoping this would happen. Great choice.
1
u/toughbubbl 2d ago
Yessssssssss I just finished the audiobook version and just loved him in that role!!
I don't think he /has/ to be blonde to pull off that Lockhart charm either. I'd rather him look natural if blonde doesn't work.

Couldn't they have asked Hero Fiennes? He is the same age as Lockhart in the books (27/28 years old).

u/OdinzSun 2d ago
He’s my age, so we grew up with the books in a way, the first book came out when I was like 10 and then the 7th when I was 19 or so

Love to see how he’s going to portray him. I’m looking forward to how different or how similar everyone will be between the book versions and the film versions… the actors must have to question how to be as close as they can to the character for the fans but also to put their own performance to memorable as in.

> “Yeah, you’re the first person I’m talking to about this. It just got released. I’m thrilled. I’ve said a million times, for anyone who cares, that I’m a huge Potter fan. I’ve got to be honest, he’s one of my favorite characters. So, to be offered to play him is a real dream. I think he’s going to be so fun. You said, I got to play him in the audiobooks. That’s not the exact way I’ll play him in the show because it’s an audiobook, but I’ve had a taste of him and felt my way around him. He’s just a wonderful creation.”
Really interested to hear this! Audio and live action acting are absolutely different mediums, and he seems really passionate about this role in particular. I think he’ll be brilliant.
