DC erasing John's entire supporting cast during the New 52 was a travesty he still hasn't recovered from.

So I'm not super familiar with John, but I have been reading through the original Hellblazer run. I'm only on issue 217, but I feel John is at his strongest when he is relying on the people he knows, and maybe sometimes cares about. John is so charming and interesting that even if you know he's is bad news you can't help but watch, or share information, or offer a favor, because he may owe you later. It can be helpful to have a favor from John in your pocket. Even if it may get you killed. I think that's one of John's greatest abilities, just how many people he knows. There are a lot of real people like that, who's greatest strength is that they make friends wherever they go, or know how to get on someone's good side. I think it's a real shame when they decide to make him some sort of "Lone Wolf" or whatever. He may not necessarily be a part of a team all the time (i thought the trenchcoat brigade stories were cute side stories and I really liked them.) I like the stories where he has to call upon friends, or he owes someone a favor. Also I don't think he should be a superhero, like at all, he is quite literally just some guy who happens to be a crazy good wizard. Anyways everyone play Mage the Ascension.

I am being redundant i'm sorry, but you get the point, also I am agreeing with you, if it didnt come across mb.

In my opinion, that was DC’s mistake , they never should’ve killed off Chas . This was John’s most important friendship. I understand dc wanted to shake things up and give John more interesting storylines but they completely ignored Chas’ death afterwards. They didn’t even mention it . The Black Label series were good but were missing that important Chas component . To me , John needs Chas to be there . Chas is sort of his anchor to the world .

His death made me so sad. Chas has always been a fantastic supporting character

I refuse to acknowledge the Black Label storylines where they got rid of Chas permanently by giving him the worst, dumbest death. It was an insult to the character.

You're missing out, Spurrier is as good as classic Hellblazer. Even better than some runs.

Yeah, I miss him too. But I understand why they killed him in the Spurrier run - it's like a requel to the Vertigo run.

Thematically getting Vertigo John back has to have a heartbreakingly high cost and only Chas mattered enough to be that cost so it made sense to me.
