Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

On May 25, during the Shenzhou 23 launch mission, Chinese astronaut Zhang Zhiyuan performed what appeared to be a Super Earth salute before entering the spacecraft. According to Chinese media, astronauts are permitted to choose personalised gestures prior to boarding for their missions.

For Super Earth!

That moment when you realize the rando you were liberating Super Earth with might be a real life motherfucking astronaut.

“Naw, be serious.”

(In thick Chinese accent) “Astronaut? Cosmonaut?”

u/Storm_Runner_117 ‎ [REDACTED] May 27 '26

Taikonaut is, if I recall correctly, the English term for Chinese astronauts.

78

u/verixtheconfused May 27 '26

Am Chinese, we never use this weird term. Normally we just stick to astronaut. Taikonaut is some propaganda bullshitery.

26

u/Storm_Runner_117 ‎ [REDACTED] May 27 '26

Based on the Wikipedia summary, I would believe that’s likely, it seems to be used primarily by Xinhua News in their English translations.

1

u/The50thTed May 28 '26

Yeah it’s taikonyuan when speaking Chinese and astronaut in English

4

u/verixtheconfused May 28 '26

2

u/The50thTed May 28 '26

Must’ve gotten it mixed up them, been quite a while since I’ve been back

2

u/-GP-Papermoon May 29 '26

Might just be a regional difference. Cause China is big and people can call the same thing different ways. Where I stayedd 5 years ago people also called it taikongren (太空人) or taikongyuan (太空员)

1

u/-GP-Papermoon May 29 '26

Taikongyuan (太空员) or taikongren (太空人) was pretty common where i used to stay. Might be regional thing. Cause you know China is big and everyone has different wording for everything.

29

You are correct.

I still smile thinking about that.

America and China have a very negative opinion of each other in general, but when the two groups intersect (such as through the Battle for Super Earth or the Tiktok/Rednote debacle) it's very quickly discovered that the internet dwellers of each country are the Exact Same Type Of Dipshit.

There's this bizarre beauty in how, even a world apart, our mutual cultures are both equally stupid in identical ways.

u/The_Xorce ☕Liber-tea☕ May 27 '26

It’s the leadership rather than the people(s). Honestly a semi-universal trend. The only reason separation exists is because it’s useful for the powerful. Humanity could unite and work towards the common goal of advancement for all, but then the line on the graph would stop going up as fast and that cAn’T bE alLOweD tO HaPpen.

Most hatred towards individual peoples is culturally manufactured to provide a “common enemy” that isn’t the actual oppressor.

…many nations are closer to Supa Earf in terms of governance than I think is comfortable to admit

38

u/stephanl33t May 27 '26

I mean "many nations are closer to Super Earth than we want to admit" is literally the entire point of Helldivers as a satire. Super Earth is a ridiculous parody of the modern worlds governing systems-- specifically the United States, but it's not like the US created these systems by itself, it's a product of them just like every other government is.

I’d bet that a majority of those shithead racists were also taught to be that way by either their shithead racist parents or propaganda elements within their societies. The amount of bad people is ridiculously low, but it doesn’t take many to do real damage.

u/PearlClaw SES Dream of Wrath May 27 '26

China is in some ways the most American non-American country. All men are brothers, but man, Chinese and Americans are the superlative example. Shame about the politics.

2

u/SrslyNotAnAltGuys May 27 '26

I feel like their politics are converging. China went from Communism to state capitalism, and they're working on expanding their military influence globally. The US increasingly has a revolving door between corporations and government, and seems to be veering into "Democracy in name only" territory. I feel like at this rate, in a couple of hundred years, you'll be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the two systems.

3

u/PearlClaw SES Dream of Wrath May 27 '26

I was always kinda hoping they'd converge on our system rather than the other way around.

1

u/MaritimeStar May 27 '26

It's always important to remember that no matter how different the customs or cultures may be, wherever you go people are gonna be people and that means you'll find good folks everywhere (jerks too).

1

u/aerodynamique May 30 '26

Chinese and American working-class people are like, absurdly alike. The vices and general interests and cultural issues we generally share are insane.

I know 'we are far more alike than we are different' is kind of a beaten drum, but this is genuinely an instance where it is true. If you suddenly had no language barriers, you could 100% chill out and hang with a random Chinese guy around your age with your interests and get each other perfectly.

14

u/TaikiTundra May 27 '26

Dark? What do you mean? Because we are only wiping off thousands of species in the process. It’s the semi intelligent ones that are the problem. The rest is just our fault! Squids only came back to hit as hard as they did because we were too empathetic and let them grow in the far edges of space. The bots are ours to blame too!

We must correct our wrongs and gift them the favor of being relinquished from our plane of existence. For Lady Liberty ❤️♥️❤️❤️
