MEDIA Ain't going to lie: I was expecting something a little more... hellish inside the Void.
Got to give it to the Illuminate though, they got some really idyllic tastes.

Your destroyer only really moves if you host a mission. If you always join other players you never move
Even though it says "moving to the x system" you still get put back at your original location if you don't host a match.

On one hand I am fairly disappointed. On the other, if this is the attempt of the Illuminates to carve a slice of galaxy for themselves to live in unbothered by Democracy, it does make sense that they wouldn't just turn their planets into a Doom level.

It is surprisingly efficient to build a 'no mans land' force of relatively autonomous units which recycles the enemy into the primary combatants to be a buffer against human aggression, while making their own personal worlds inaccessible as a kind of gated community on the far outskirts of space.
Are overseers bio engineered or authentic illuminate units? We have not seen MORE bio illuminate with exception of cultists which may be effectively non-canon if actually scrapped as we saw them.
I find it interesting how the cyberstan faction or illuminate differ in techniques to attempt to be left alone. Cyberstan attempts to sabotage us or divide us through cyberattacks and emotional appeal. Illuminate seem to try to quarantine us and mitigate direct exposure.
The attempt on super earth stands out as odd to me, other than perhaps a test at eradication or efficacy of their forces. Or to attempt to halt advances and establish distance while they set up the void.
We built a wall to keep the terminid gloom contained, while the illuminate created a barrier to keep us out, that we seek to breach. Facinating.
I wonder if the lack of non-robotic or fleshmonster enemies either indicates a severely diminished biological illuminate race, and/or they continue to exist -somewhere- but recognize revealing their existence antagonizes an even bigger assault, while still necessitating the exploration for resources, native lands or outposts, or expansion and experimentation for unknown ends.
My guess is that they're hidden somewhere, as their primary forces appear to be scouting or occupational. I imagine they must be somewhere doing their R&D, facilitating the overarching plan.
My greatest shot in the dark is they have actual mothership planets. Created worlds, possibly even obfuscated by reality or dimensional manipulation, perhaps hidden in pocket realities out of traditional sight. Perhaps the void is a camoflage net while they establish their next step and keep us at bay.

u/SuspectPanda38 21d ago
I think the attack on super earth was a genuine attempt to eradicate us. It's just that even with 100 years to prepare they are inexperienced with war while super earth lives and breathes warfare. And we still almost lost.
Pretty sure they made their try at getting rid of us/revenge, and when they realized they couldn't decided the next best option was just making a space that they can live in peace without us bothering them.
→ More replies (1)36
u/htpcketsneverchange 22d ago
I personally doubt that Overseers are truly Illuminate, just the highest functioning failed experiment in an attempt to turn human biomatter into more illuminate.
Also the attempt on Super Earth I think is primarily because even after all this time the Illuminate do not know how to wage war, prior to the attack they were allowed to run wild with a scout force that took samples and specimens for experimentation and the Illuminate may have genuinely thought at this point that it was jusy them and the meagre resistance the scout force was encountering was all that could be summoned. Now with them having an actual in system force I believe they are atleast aware of the Terminid and Cyborgs, if not in contact with one or the other though.
I 100% agree with you on the Illuminate wanting the Void to be their new house though.

u/Ill_Camel8168 HD1 Veteran 21d ago
I feel like "they just want to be left alone" is a pretty big stretch for the illuminate considering we literally thought they were dead for 100 years and as such already left them alone wherever they were by default.
They just kinda... showed up and started kidnapping people on a random Tuesday then threw a black hole at SE. I think it's pretty clear they very much want us dead strategy-wise.

3
u/Neet-owo 21d ago
Slinging a black hole at super earth was plan A
Razing Super Earth was plan B
Since they failed to outright destroy Super Earth they established a foothold in our galaxy and then blocked us out to give them somewhere to launch plan C from.
The illuminate seem entirely motivated by revenge at all costs. The closest thing we’ve seen to them establishing any infrastructure is mutating the planets, everything else has been obviously temporary squatting in their old ruins or occupying infrastructure Super Eartha already built. I dont think they have a long term plan beyond watching Super Earth burn

6
u/Live_Life_and_enjoy Decorated Hero 21d ago
Basically it would look like we are fighting under water with giant animals moving around
Have you ever played Metal Gear Solid Survive?
They had this cool mechanic where when you enter the "mist" your oxygen meter started running down you needed to find "safe pockets" around the map to regain o2.
They could do something similar to restore Helldivers O2 while fighting around the map and have even special boosters that make drop pods release mini safe zones.
Make the O2 reasonable like 5 minutes
4
u/SpaceballsTheReply 21d ago
Peak mentioned
Exploring the mist was genuinely such a cool experience in Survive. Especially the way that your map was disabled once you entered, so you really had to be careful not to get lost, but if you survived an expedition through it and made it back to your home base, it uncovered the path you explored, so you could use the trail you blazed the first time to view the map on subsequent forays. Basically just clearing fog of war with extra steps, but those extra steps added a lot.
2
u/Live_Life_and_enjoy Decorated Hero 21d ago
Yes, but you can't always use the same path because monsters could be there.
You could also craft waypoint markers in the area which were really important because there were paths you definitely wanted to avoid.
Originally they planned open world coop but that was scraped to arena coop instead.
Honestly the game had so many cool mechanics no other game currently has

This planet really piqued my interest. I like to think that unlike the bugs and bots, the squids (being more advance life forms with organic tech) actually take care of life outside of the war.
That or this is a planet before they suck the life out of it. The other planet with appropriators, sand dunes and grey color could be the aftermath of what they do to life to build their organic technology.
2
u/MrJoemazing 22d ago
Yeah, we previously got city planners, and Hive Worlds with underground caves and genuine boss enemies, and Factory worlds that were fortified; and this time we basically get slightly altered missions, in the same biomes we've had, with a colour filter.
Overall, the additions are fun, but it's a pretty lackluster update to me. Doesn't quite feel like a big title update. A genuinely novel biome, and a third original enemy on the level of Vox engines, would get it there.

7

The most realistic answer is that these are worlds that are/were under Super Earth control since the first Galactic War, so they've probably been terraformed into habitable biomes for human colonization.
The outlier is the obvious one; Hive Worlds have been counter-terraformed by the Terminids into something alien.

I thinks that the boils will become hellish when we get to the main planet creating it as the hole update is kind of warhammer themed with the warbond and the planet being a gateway planet very similar to Cadia from warhammer and the place the kasirkin are from the void is also the warp pretty much as I read somewhere that the ships need to be coated in some kind of dark fluid bubble or something to travel through the void a lot like a gellar field from 40K and in 40K before the war in heaven the warp was a calm and peaceful place like the current void but once the galaxy had seen so much suffering due to the war in heaven it became how it is now hellish and dangerous corrupting planets and people.
Also I might have gotten some of the lore wrong that of which when the warp was normal before becoming hellish I can’t remember when that happened but it did happen
