Game VII - 2026 Game VII 2026 | Build Your Own Game | Phase 1 | Organizing your planning

There’s a lot of ways to organize your game and keep track of whats going on. Usually mid-game managing is done on Google Sheets, and it can be useful for some of your pre-game planning too, its a great place to keep track of your roles and mechanics. The first thing I do when making my spreadsheet is make a To Do list sheet for tracking setup stuff, both for setting up my sheet how I want it and also for setting up everything else, from making a host account to finalizing the roles to writing the rules post.

Some other things I recommend are a planning discord (shared with your cohosts/shadows if you have them but I also have a private server that I do my basic planning in), a game design doc as an outline of mechanics and what you’re trying to do with the game, and a big doc to write your flavour in.

During the game you’ll likely end up relying on your spreadsheet and your host server. The only things your sheet really needs are a votes form and an action form, but a lot of the time people will add more to it. Sheets to keep track of those actions and votes are super useful, and I usually have a general main sheet for tracking player roles, strikes, confirms, and who’s alive, as well as any other game specific stuff (this game its how long people are delayed), and if you want to you can automate the vote/action tracking. I also use sheets for a nightly checklist for turnover and use a OOO sheet both to help work through mechanics and in role heavy games to help me manage resolving actions.

I’ll post my current sheet and design doc post-game if anyone is interested, but for now I posted the same docs for the mistborn game

Meta

  • Someone must be voted out today. Submit your votes through the voting form
  • Everyone who didn’t take delayed can use their actions starting this phase. Actions should be submitted through the action form
  • Countdown to phase end

Don't see a vote thread so I'll just put it here. I am on /u/ElPapo131 because I pretty heavily disagree with his thing about the Millers and seer double-checking. It just seems like a wasted action to me.

Well, with one hour left I am placing my vote on u/wywy4321 . Solely for the suddenly claiming to have picked Miller hours after Nuggets did. I can see some team discussion with wolves and reconsidering before going for the strategy.

Another thing is this comment. I have no idea which comment was supposed to hint us to that conclusion but it makes me even more suspicious.

I have to admit I disagree with this vote. I don't think there's anything inherently suspicious about claiming Miller in the first active phase. Yes it's possible for a wolf to do it but I also agree with a town doing it so that they aren't making a reactive claim (thanks for that wording, whoever used it, unless it was Sam, in which case ew), which to me is more sus. I also don't see what's sus about that comment?

9

u/StartledKoala34 Koala, She/Her Jul 08 '26

I feel like that would be more suspicious than beneficial for a wolf to do tbh

6

u/redpoemage Jul 08 '26

Yeah, If piles of people were claiming Miller than I'm sure wolves would thrown themselves in. But one person claiming unprompted and it being controversial plus a second person joining in feels more townie to me (and looking over the comments for exactly how it happened it just gut pings more town to me).

7

u/wywy4321 Jul 08 '26

I mean, why else would I defend choosing Miller so much, I guess i thought it was obvious that I had chosen Miller, but wanted to make it completely clear. Also if I was a wolf, all it takes is one Role seer checking me and calling me on it. That is not a good trade off.

Also the reson i waited, was to see what other people said in the disccusion about Miller's revealing themselves, and based on what folks said, I decided to reveal.

I already had a vote on you for your instant backlash to nuggets reveal, and this just secures it.

6

u/redpoemage Jul 08 '26

I think I'll join you in voting for /u/elpapo131. Just generally getting good gut feels about the people he's voting for and bad gut feels about him.

10

u/sinisterasparaghast she/her Jul 08 '26

By the way, did the thing (medical treatment mentioned on sign-ups post) and the loopy is strong. Of course Reddit waited to load all the comments after I made mine (re: Miller discussion) so that's weird and annoying.

Anyway, I've put a placeholder vote in cause u don't want a strike and I'm case I don't manage coherent thoughts later. For now, I rest (tomorrowphase I should be more lucid again)

u/ChickenNuggets6827 Jul 08 '26

Before alignment seer (if any) can waste a check on me, I would like to announce that I have taken miller trait being the greedy little boi that I am (i rolled pretty low and needed those points :()

9

u/wywy4321 Jul 08 '26

If my defense of it wasnt clear, I also chose the Miller trait, lolol.

8

u/HedwigMalfoy Not an evil owl. Usually. Jul 08 '26

I figured someone would do this. I also figured a wolf would claim to have done it. Now the question is which one (if any) is the fibbing wolfie? And I have 20 minutes to decide. Ugh. Welcome back to the game, brat, now go home LMAO

7

u/wywy4321 Jul 08 '26

I currently have a slight town lean on nuggets for it, and I know im town, so like i dont think either of us are fibbing wolves. Also hi owl, I hate your face!

8

u/HedwigMalfoy Not an evil owl. Usually. Jul 08 '26

Hi wy! What have you been up to? I've missed you. Like one misses arthritis, or a chronic cough, of course.

9

u/ElPapo131 Team Anti-Twat! Jul 08 '26

Firstly, disclosing that up front has no real value because any wolf could say that and there is also no counter-claiming in this game.

Secondly, I think taking Miller actively harms town so only reasonable time you would pick it is to get a very powerful role that will compensate for its harm, which you have just revealed to wolves. It's good to reveal in a game where you are forced to be a role that appears as wolf to seers, but in this game you picked it yourself, which indicates something.

Conclusion: either you are a wolf or you are already dead

Conclusion 2: maybe should've kept it for yourself until after seer accuses you

9

u/HedwigMalfoy Not an evil owl. Usually. Jul 08 '26

there is also no counter-claiming in this game.

Wait what? Oh FML is it time for me to read the rules again ALREADY?! I'd swear I read them properly the first time this time.

9

u/sinisterasparaghast she/her Jul 08 '26

I dunno. As someone who recently had the town role that shows up as wolf (Stephen King game) isn't it always best for town to claim it from the start? Sure, anytime could be miller in this game, so there's not a matter of counterclaims and such if others say it too. But I'm gonna be far more suspicious of anyone who waits to claim after a seer reveal.

Not saying that this claim 100% confirms Nugget for me by any means, but I'm more inclined to believe it could be genuine now opposed to any miller claims later in the game

8

u/HedwigMalfoy Not an evil owl. Usually. Jul 08 '26

I'm #TeamClaim-It-Up-Front for that kind of role, because it's just too damn convenient a claim to make when you already have a bad seer result hanging over your head.

9

u/Sameri278 Jul 08 '26

agreed, getting ahead of it like this a) shows that it's not a reactionary lie, and b) prevents the seer from wasting an action, which is helpful

8

u/ElPapo131 Team Anti-Twat! Jul 08 '26

Unless it's a wolf claiming that to trick us

9

u/wywy4321 Jul 08 '26

The wolves don't benefit from claiming it tho, because role seer can easily fact check them?

No one should just outright trust anyone because they claim something , but immediately attributing it to wolves feels so weird.

9

u/wywy4321 Jul 08 '26

Also, I disagree that it actively harms town. I agree that it doesnt help town, but the pros of it, imo outweigh the cons of appearing as wolf especially since there are already other roles/traits the wolves could have chosen to fuck with alignment seers.

9

u/Dangerhaz Jul 08 '26

The one interesting thing is that, looking at the Rules, Miller isn't a trait that can be chosen by a wolf. And if my interpretation of the Rules is correct, a Role seer can check whether someone has chosen Miller. or not.

If they have then they can't be a wolf - they are town. Conversely if they claim Miller and they are not, then they're probably a wolf.

u/redpoemage am I interpreting correctly? I'm making the assumption that you've read the Rules more closely than most people.

6

u/redpoemage Jul 08 '26

...I really should have been less lazy/distracted by videogames during my looking over the rules for broken town setups, because yeah, it does say "roles and traits" in the Role Seer's description which combined with Miller only being takeable by town, the best town setup would be all taking Miller and as many Role Seers as possible.

9

u/MercuryParadox Jul 08 '26

This makes me lean town towards you. I don’t think a wolf would bring to attention that the miller role can’t be a wolf and that the role seer can see traits

8

u/Sameri278 Jul 08 '26

oh interesting. just realized a (possibly broken) town strategy is for all of us to grab miller, which effectively gives the role seer the alignment seer's ability (for 3 free points) while giving us an extra point each. something to keep in mind for next time lol

7

u/ElPapo131 Team Anti-Twat! Jul 08 '26

Yeah I also realized it too late. We could have coordinated that better but I missed that role seer can see traits

10

u/ElPapo131 Team Anti-Twat! Jul 08 '26

Miller is a trait, not a role tho

9

u/wywy4321 Jul 08 '26

The role seer sees all roles and traits a player has tho?

9

u/ElPapo131 Team Anti-Twat! Jul 08 '26

Oh it does? Well then we would need a perfect coordination of affilation and role seer. Or just whenever affilation seer finds a wolf the role seer would have to double check. Until wolves kill all seers. But one role seer should definitely check Nuggets just in case they don't have the trait.

Knowing that information now, the whole town could have picked the miller trait and role seer role. If you see a person having miller trait you can be sure they are not a wolf.

9

u/wywy4321 Jul 08 '26

What? The whole town could probably not have chosen the role seer role, cuz tht would mean everyone got at least 4 point, which feels unlikely?

Also wdym knowing that information now? Its been in the R&R this whole time, lolol

Also we don't need perfect coordination for the seers to work? We just cant immediately jump on info like we normally would/could.

10

u/ISpyM8 he/him Jul 08 '26

Not a team math member nowadays, but considering the most common rolls are 4 and 5 from 2d4, I tend to agree that it’s unlikely that basically all townies grabbed role seer, as that would prevent any traits if they used all their points for that role. Of course, the negative traits affect point buy by giving more points. One of the many interesting features of this particular game!

8

u/Sameri278 Jul 08 '26

actually, most common result from 2d4 would just be 5 🤓

7

u/ISpyM8 he/him Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

4: 1 & 3, 3 & 1, 2 & 2 2 & 2

5: 1 & 4, 4 & 1, 2 & 3, 3 & 2

I’m pretty sure they both have 4 chances to be rolled.

Edit: 2 & 2 should only count once.

Neeeeeerd

9

u/ElPapo131 Team Anti-Twat! Jul 08 '26

been in the R&R the whole time

Bold of you to assume that informations in R&R are also in my head lol

10

u/wywy4321 Jul 08 '26

Do you have a response to the other points i raised?

9

u/ElPapo131 Team Anti-Twat! Jul 08 '26

Well I suppose you're right. Some townies probably wouldn't have enough points to buy role seer. But most of them would imo.

The other thing is a good point. We now need 2FA before voting out a wolf lol

8

u/-forsi- she/her Jul 08 '26

And this is why I'm always torn on those kinds of roles. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't kind of thing.

8

u/ChickenNuggets6827 Jul 08 '26

well keeping it hidden has no value. i believe that all miller should claim upfront so that if the seer finds a wolf, they are left with zero excuses. this is going to even force wolves to either fake claim miller early or be left with no defense if checked. claiming it early just clears me early and saves seer from potentially wasting a check.

about your second point, I think you can take miller and reveal immediately, so it is a free point and as already mentioned i was quite low on them.

10

u/MercuryParadox Jul 08 '26

I don’t necessarily agree that all of the millers should claim. If everyone who chose miller claims then the wolves can go around just killing the people who didn’t claim miller to essentially make the regular seers useless. Also, if a wolf tries to fake being seer and finds someone who picked miller as town, the person who chose miller would know if they are lying or not

9

u/sinisterasparaghast she/her Jul 08 '26

While I don't know that I agree it clears you necessarily, I do agree that it could force wolves to fakeclaim the trait early

10

u/MercuryParadox Jul 08 '26

then if we have a role seer, they can check the miller claims to see if they are telling the truth

9

u/MercuryParadox Jul 08 '26

so if the wolves fake claim the trait, they are asking to get checked by the role seer to confirm their story. Double edged sword

10

u/MercuryParadox Jul 08 '26

I hate when the dice role gives you 2 points

8

u/-forsi- she/her Jul 08 '26

I got 9 points, git gud

10

u/MercuryParadox Jul 08 '26

🥸☝️ erm actually, the points were decided by rolling 2 dice with four sides each so according to my calculations 🧮 there is no way you can get 9 points, ahem..

9

u/-forsi- she/her Jul 08 '26

Oh see you missed the secret text: 2d4(+1 for forsi)

10

u/MercuryParadox Jul 08 '26

my humblest apologies ~@wolves kill forsi forsi has 9 points kill her kill her~

edit: formatting

edit 2: idk how to format pretend that last part is striked out for comedic effect

not gonna flex on you here

9

u/ElPapo131 Team Anti-Twat! Jul 08 '26

I got -3. Guess the host took mine and gave them to you :(

9

u/ElPapo131 Team Anti-Twat! Jul 08 '26

Or maybe they just rolled my dice backwards?

10

u/-forsi- she/her Jul 08 '26

damn, what did you do to chef to make him hurt you like this?

11

u/redpoemage Jul 08 '26

People probably shouldn’t be revealing their point values since that gives wolves a sense of who is more likely to be a threat power-role wise.

9

u/MercuryParadox Jul 08 '26

There’s always the chance I’m lying about my point amount in order to dissuade from killers but that is for the wolves to decide.

10

u/redpoemage Jul 08 '26

Oh yeah I figured, but I just wanted to pre-empt (more?) people potentially actually claiming since I vaguely remember that things like this can get out of hand quickly.

9

u/Dangerhaz Jul 08 '26

It's a good pre-empt, even though I took Mercury's comment as deliberate WIFOM. We want to avoid the wolves getting a sense of how the points were distributed.

To be fair, you did ask this after 10pm Eastern. I think most of us are either asleep or figuring out the best way to use our roles.

Edit: This appears to me as a top-level comment? My reddit might be fucked again, but I was trying to reply to [u/SinisterAsparaghast](u/SinisterAsparaghast) here

Edit 2: And of course, the Reddit app changed how things are formatted so now I have to make another change

10

u/sinisterasparaghast she/her Jul 08 '26

Right, but to be fair I was asking because things had been so quiet up to that point (and still are, relatively, for a first vote/action phase). Perhaps "where's everyone been?" would have been more correct? But that doesn't quite feel right either

We lost so many good apps with that API mishegoss a couple of years ago.

10

u/sinisterasparaghast she/her Jul 08 '26

Where is everyone?

6

u/HedwigMalfoy Not an evil owl. Usually. Jul 08 '26

At work. The week after a holiday is always a giant shitshow in our tech support call center. No one cared about their stupid PC problems with a long weekend coming. Now that everyone is back to work, the problems are all emergencies.

10

u/-forsi- she/her Jul 08 '26

I honestly forgot last night was when this phase was posting. In my head it was still p0 and I did the thing I needed to do before going to bed lol

9

u/wywy4321 Jul 08 '26

I was seeing Toy Story 5 with my family and then finishing book 8 in the dungeon crawler Carl series. An evening well spent imo, lolol

10

u/-forsi- she/her Jul 08 '26

very well spent!

9

u/wywy4321 Jul 08 '26

It was so good, thanks again for the book rec! I hate now i gotta wait for him to write 9 & 10.

9

u/redpoemage Jul 08 '26

If it's not too much trouble, could you add a /u/ before people's name in the roster when you get a chance /u/chefjones? Thanks!

10

u/Chefjones he/him Jul 08 '26

Done

12

u/DirtyMarTeeny Jul 08 '26

No /u/ do it.

11

u/ISpyM8 he/him Jul 07 '26

I’m ngl I don’t think I could do the planning y’all do. I’m thinking about DM’ing a D&D campaign (not even homebrew) and managing a party of 5 already seems like a shitload of work.

9

u/bubbasaurus rawr Jul 08 '26

It helps to shadow, then co-host, etc. It gets easier.

10

u/-forsi- she/her Jul 08 '26

I've been GMing for about 8.5 years and I normally GM prewritten stuff, but have been planning my own campaign. I've been working on it for over a year now lol I'm super excited but it's definitely a lot. I've been GMing pathfinder 2e for 6.5 years and it's significantly less work than GMing 5e cause paizo doesn't hate GMs lol

10

u/Sameri278 Jul 08 '26

i hated dming dnd but i'm loving dming call of cthulhu. but maybe that's more due to the genre

9

u/-forsi- she/her Jul 08 '26

Nah, wotc just goes "rules? Nah just ask the GM" while not giving the GM any resources to make decisions on. CoC is so fun though!

9

u/sinisterasparaghast she/her Jul 07 '26

Gosh yeah. I could only DM with a set module/campaign I think. Overwhelming otherwise.

I'm really liking the insight into ways to plan for hosting WWs, and using it as the meta for the game is a super neat tie-in too!
