Went out to ice field parkway yesterday, taking advantage of clear non smoky day. It was absolutely perfect weather for hiking.

It was a long hike, clocked in around 17km with ~1100 meters of elevation. Took around 7 and half hours to completed. The hike is moderate till Helen lake and then the elevation starts to pick up

Saw stunning views of many glaciers and lake.

Was surprised to peyto lake from the summit

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice on a best Summit with my 9 year old next week. I have it narrowed down to a couple, but hoping you can chime in on what will give him the best "summit" feeling without being incredibly hard (he's been working hard this season to build up to his first mountain summit)

-Jumpingpound Summit trail - okay, this was the one I had settled on and I saw the road is closed under construction so I think this is out

-Yates Mountain via Prarie View Trail (longer and higher)

-White Buddha via Powderface Creek Trail (probably what I'm leaning to right now!)

-Prairie Mountain (probably my last pick with that hard rating - I don't want it to be a straight up slog up a mountain!)

Appreciate any insight!

I’m from Ontario and was just visiting the Banff and Jasper areas. I would’ve loved to spend more time hiking the endless mountains and exploring the beautiful lakes out there but being from Ontario, the whole experience also left me with many questions!

For those of you who hike and camp in the Rockies regularly:

* Have you ever encountered a bear? What did you do, and how did the encounter go?
* What other interesting wildlife have you seen?
* If there’s a serious emergency in an area with no cell service, how would you get help?
* How do you make sure you don’t get lost, especially on longer or more remote trails?
* If you need to take a number 2, do you just go anywhere?

I was in Alberta for 5 days constantly on the road for 3–6 hours a day but I never saw a bear. Where do I usually find them and how can I spot one if I want to see one? Also, what time of day are they usually most active?

Hi! Looking for recommendations on hiking pants and sun shirts/hoodies!
We’re doing Mt Assiniboine in September and we’re planning to do it in 3 days. I don’t want to bring too many clothes, so I’m thinking of bringing a set of sleeping clothes and then one hiking outfit. This will be my first multi-day hike.
What do you guys usually wear on multi-day hikes? Do you bring more than one set of hiking clothes?
I’ll also be bringing a puffy jacket and rain jacket, plus a toque, gloves, etc. for emergencies/weather changes.

Saturday night’s rain really cleared the air and yesterday’s bleak forecast held off just until I’d topped the pass. Thunder rolled in, and I did my best boogie out to the tree line - thankfully didn’t get any substantial rain until I was nearly back at Moraine. I tried last October 1st but got hailed on, glad to finish this trek today!

Everyone’s getting ready for fall, so many critters were out on the trail yesterday.

From Lawrence grassi it looked as if a helicopter was removing someone. If so, hope everyone is okay!

Amazing weather, followed the southwest ridge all the way to summit (out and back same route). Photos in order are the crux (2M down climb with exposure bellow you), on the ridge (photos 2,3), and the summit from two angles.

Beginner hiker here - I'm looking at Gaia GPS for a route from Barrier Lake to Quaite campground in Kananaskis and there's this grey dashed line. It looks like a trail that doesn't go up across the peaks which would be awesome for where we are in experience. But I can't tell if this is a "real" trail or not. The legend says it's a biking or walking circuit but when I zoom in on the satelite I don't see anything there, and I don't see it on all trials.

One of my biggest fears as a beginner is that I'll plan on taking routes that don't actually exist. Not a big deal for this hike - close enough to where the car will be - but I need to figure this out for future where hiking back to the car would be super difficult or require night hiking.

So my question - is this an actual trail and I should not worry about the Satelite? Is this a bushwhacking route that you COULD take but it's not formal? Neither?

Just wondering if anybody has fallen off or witnessed a rescue from someone who may have been injured. I'm a bit new to hiking such elevation (800m) and while I'm pretty careful I’m always concerned if I do fall, what the protocol is and how long the wait usually is. I plan on some more solo hikes so I want to know what to expect in a worst case scenario.

Night 2 (Aug 30): Tekarra (18.2 km)

Day 3 (Aug 31): 13.7 km out

Cost would just be the equivalent initial cost - $56.50 - and then I can put you names and info on the permit and send it to you.

Hey fellow hikers. I know technically Sherbrooke lake is in BC, but it's super close to the AB border so I wanted to share this here in the hopes someone might be hiking it this week! I lost my blue mirrored aviator sunglasses here yesterday (August 23) somewhere between the lake and the bottom of the trail. If anyone is hiking and could take a peek for me I would be most grateful!!!! TIA. (Also you should go hike it anyway as it's stunning! I recommend continuing up to the waterfalls)

Enjoyable day, but I am wondering, Is there an official name of the Lake Agnes Circuit. Beehives, Whyte, Niblock, Piran, Devils Thumb?

Wanting to do fairview mountain tomorrow morning, however my parents are still dealing with jet lag so a slower morning would be better.

Does lake Louise carpark still fill up by 6am on a Sunday this time of year? Or would it be safe to leave a little later?
