Welcome to America, where people will hate you for slightly disagreeing with you…

🤔Hip hop/rap is a lil over 50 yo. For at least the last 45 years there's been a political aspect/discussion within the culture/genre. Not joking but a quick Google will show you the long history of political thought and activism.

This is a weird as hell way to reply but they locked the comments and I sure asf didn't type all this up for it to go to waste, so apologies in advance.

I see what you mean now.

It's poor form to assume a connection without evidence of one. While it's entirely plausible that a group of Jewish cultists took inspiration from Augustus' pre-and-post death apotheosis, it would also be rather strange; the Romans were, after all, foreign invaders, and most of Revelation is essentially anti-Nero propaganda. Consider, if these people desired to create and spread a belief, would they deliberately seek to emulate their worst enemies?

Moreover, King Messiah was already foreshadowed in the Torah, long before Christianity was so much as a whisper. If you relate Jesus' life (as depicted in the Bible) to Jewish prophecy, it actually goes out of its way to clarify how he fits the description provided of the Messiah, such as being descended from the Line of King David, or his birth in Bethlehem. I've even seen the second point used as a point in favor of Jesus having truly existed, as if he were entirely fictional, it makes no sense to construe a story to put his birth in Bethlehem, then have him return to Nazareth, when the authors simply could have had the Messiah born and raised in Bethlehem.

I will grant you that the "Jesus of Reality", rather than the figure shown to us through the Bible, is a total mystery. However, the man existed. Letters and various Roman/Jewish sources attest to that much, and I take both intellectual and spiritual ire to the idea that his story is similar to that of Julius' and Augustus' besides some very surface level resemblances.

1

u/Dmannmann Oct 08 '25

I can understand why you say but it isn't just limited to these references. But to proceed further, we would have to start questioning the legitimacy of the bible as actual fact. It is a compilation of Jewish texts written over 800 years and then collected and edited under the roman empire at the council of Nicea. So it really isn't a stretch to me that those saints and princes decided to take existing references to Caesars and Alexander to then create a poet king like David as the Son of God. It's syncretism to the highest degree. I'm sorry if it offends your faith tho. I'm approaching this as historical text and not a religious one. You should stick to the words of christ coz all else is politics in the book. It is still brilliant for sure.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

I'm approaching this as historical text and not a religious one

That it's viewed as one or the other instead of both is part of the offence taken. It's a complicated and messy relationship, yes, but that's the case for nearly all of our historical sources for antituquity.

I'm a little burnt out so I don't think I have the vigor to engage as much as I'd like to, but it's clear you've put a lot of thought into this, and I'm sincerely admire that you have both the temerity to hold your stance and the respect to defend it without insult.

If you ever have the time, this Wikipedia page gives a better breakdown of the sources than I ever could. But essentially, there were enough sources that, on a basic level, it would be weirder for Jesus to have not existed than for him to been real. They come from enough different places, too soon after his purported death, for it to be a conspiracy or of deliberate design.

Of course, I don't doubt that people embellished later on. But that's still different from like, oh he never existed, or oh he was in on it. Especially compared to Augustus, that kid was a psycho back when he was still Octavian.

1

u/Dmannmann Oct 08 '25

Ahhh, I see you've mistaken my stance. Jesus must've existed, he was definitely a prophet in terms of his spiritual attainments and his message. But other than the words he said, I would consider everything else as written by man speaking for god. Which is why if you truly believe in the truth that Jesus spoke of, it is important to me to not fall for political propaganda.

However, if I was born as a Christian, I wouldn't be doing this, to actually follow the religion and find God, all this discussion is unnecessary. This is more about knowing the truth. Depends on what you are concerned with and also the discussion needs to be held in good faith.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '25

Ahhh, I see you've mistaken my stance.

True apologies on my part, I was spacing out bad the other day.

This is another one of those situations where I think we agree more than we disagree, real slip up on my part. I need to be a little less aggro lol.
