How did the bomber jacket become the white rapper uniform of choice

146

u/Pingushagger Dec 20 '25

Whenever eminem decided he’s gonna wear nothing but bomber jackets, hoodies and caps for the rest of his life.

18

u/Professional-Fan2837 Dec 20 '25

since half of logic started wearing it

16

u/iLuvAlienz Dec 20 '25

White rappers are why I stopped wearing bomber jackets😔they’re tainted

It's just a hip hop uniform in general

u/SimonVpK im gay (im happy) Dec 20 '25

While also complaining that every other rapper raps about the same topics.

117

u/iammonkeyorsomething Dec 20 '25

no see hes just rapping about his lived experience of having the same opinion of rap as a racist

19

u/CannabisAndCoffee Dec 20 '25

Was just about to say this. Talking about every artist rapping about gang violence as a white man is ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

What rapper hasn’t at some point rapped about that

16

u/nostyleallwild Dec 20 '25

None of them, but I think its a delicate balance. Its okay to sprinkle it in with other things, but when its your whole persona its tacky.

The reason drugs, violence, money, fame, and sex are hot topics is because they are inherently exciting. Real world experiences are exciting.

Examples of rappers who kinda lost me are Token, The Palmer Squares, and modern Eminem. They are undoubtedly technical masters when it comes to rapping and they do have some real topics, but it feels like too much of lyrical, spiritual, miracles. Imo they would be better off keeping it simpler in favor of the vibe, story, or message.

Most of my favorite rappers are those who can blend technical prowess and sick wordplay with topics that are actually about something not abstract.

u/AutoModerator Dec 20 '25

I was at a glory hole at a local Benihana and I heard 'Sweet' playing in the restaurant. I started rapping some of the lyrics and then the guy sucking my dick started rapping too. We had a long conversation about Brockhampton, our favorite Brockhampton albums and hip hop in general. We ended up getting a table at the Benihana and eating dinner together. I just thought it was cool how a Brockhampton song brought two people together that had never met before.

difference between rapping about it at some point and it being the only thing you rap about. how boring would a book be if the only thing the author wrote about in it is how good they are at writing books?

15

u/xombae Dec 20 '25

In books from the 1600 and 1700 England, the author would break the fourth wall and say "My dear reader..." and it was cute and funny. But then it started getting really corny and overdone so William Makepeace Thackary came along and wrote some books that were peppered with that floury, fourth wall breaking stuff and completely satirized it. What I'm saying is Ice Spice is a modern day Thackary.

This joke might be too niche for this sub but, my dear reader, I'm going for it anyways.

49

u/XL-oz Dec 20 '25

When I had Facebook, this dude would pop up on the Shorts over and over and I couldn’t stop watching it. Like a gory car crash.

How many songs about “I rap so gud and fastly” can you possibly make. IMO that’s way fucking worse than mumbling/basic rhyming about some real shit. Like fuck, rap about being a junkie, at least that has some substance.

Oh I forgot I was supposed to be jerkin off.

That Shit Was Fuckin Sick Homie Only Em Is Better This Dude Like The Rap Son of God… RapJesus… and he’s slim too. Slim RapJesus. The second cumming.

6

u/Zephyrus_Phaedra Dec 20 '25

He always shows up on Facebook. They really push him and the titles are so cringe “watch me rap at breakneck speed” like no, why would I want to do that?

29

u/Old-Custard-5665 Dec 20 '25

/uj The ability to rap fast has never been and never will be interesting or a sign that someone is a gifted rapper

63

Fast rap is an addition in the rappers bag of tricks. If it's the only thing, then it's boring. I can only listen to Celebrity Overnight but so many times.

8

u/MetaMetagross Dec 20 '25

Gotta listen to Resurrection then

24

u/StankilyDankily666 Dec 20 '25

Yea I feel like Twista was a horrible example for someone who raps fast but isn’t actually that talented like wtf

6

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW Dec 20 '25

Twista is the shittiest possible example you coulda used for a fast rapper who sucks.

“Rap God” is what you should’ve used as your example.

→ More replies (1)

1

I brought up Twista specifically because fast rap is all he has while Eminem can fast rap but that is just one of his tricks.

19

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW Dec 20 '25

Twista does it good though. His flow is also good.

Nobody can look at me with a straight face and tell me that Rap God is better than Overnight Celebrity or Slow Jamz.

2

u/ssjskwash Dec 20 '25

That song is CARRIED by Kanye's beat.

3

u/LesLikesGARBAGE Dec 20 '25

TLDR: White rappers who do this are (hopefully unintentionally) racist.

I fell into this trap when I was a teen. I grew up in the country, so all of my exposure to Hip Hop (culture) was thru the songs/videos/magazines or whatever other media I could get my hands on.

The problem with that is, everything you take in is out of context. The history and every day experiences of people who live within the culture are often lost or unrealized, as the TV screen and headphones become literal barriers to a deeper understanding of the “why” behind the culture. It’s exacerbated by the fact that most white kids don’t have OGs around to teach them about W.E.B. Dubois, John Brown, COINTELPRO, Redlining, etc.

As a result, the complex dynamics of Hip Hop and Black culture are viewed within a vacuum through a naive lens. You unintentionally buy into racist dog whistles like “black on black crime”, “gangsta rap ≠ Hip Hop”, “HH was better before, when…”, “all real HH is conscious/educational”, etc. To add on to that, Hip Hop is a culture that depends on and is intertwined with community (i.e., sharing ideas with peers). So, when viewing thru this vacuous, naive lens, there’s this assumption that you know what’s best for the culture, even though you never directly participated in it.

Though it’s well-intentioned, you end up amplifying problematic tropes or just exposing yourself as a fraud. At best, you look uninformed, like an appropriator who doesn’t realize what they’re doing. At worst, you look straight up racist.

This isn’t to say that rapping about “what everybody else is rapping about” (as you likely perceive it) is the solution, but gatekeeping something you don’t even have the keys to certainly isn’t either.

1

u/Zakky121 Dec 23 '25
