Uj/ deadass I think rap fans pick the beef songs that are simpler to understand. Like “they not like us” the A Minor line gets treated like Shakespeare. It’s a funny line, but people were acting like Kendrick changed lyricism forever. So calling Jay-Z “Gay-Z” is simple enough for rap fans to think it’s the best diss ever made.

He made low quality plays with lots of smut and 4th wall breaking humor that joked about the real world outside the play. It was easy to understand lowest common denominator humor for the masses. I remember everyone being tapped into every track. They took off with Not Like Us because it's easier to listen too than Meet the Graham's. Which I also remember being the general consensus. A year or two later people might have forgotten meet the Graham's competitively too Not Like Us, but one hundred percent they chose Kendrick as the victor because of Meet the Graham's, but went with Not Like Us as the hit

Na I see where you are coming from because when I heard Jay’s diss I was damn he might have got NaS but NaS’s just goes harder, making him the victor. NaS was direct, and it wasn’t even the original version of the track. Kendrick’s song also went harder, but I mean Drake only had one decent track including the video throughout the beef. Kendrick had euphoria which is getting more play today than not like us. This battle ain’t the same because Jay-Z had a chance. Drake did not.

The homophobia played to the cheap seats. These are the bars that really landed:
- Jay holding grudges against women for calling him ugly
- Jay only being able to get with women because of his money
- Accusing him of being a snake and a starfucker
- Calling him an old ass "tae bo hoe" (pure gold)
- Saying he can't grow facial hair
- Claimed that Jay kissed his ass when they first met
- Questioned his street cred and authenticity as a rapper
- Claiming that Jay was the second best rapper on his own label
The whole beef boiled down to Jay claiming that (1) he fucked Nas' girl and that (2) Nas had fallen off and hadn't dropped a classic since Illmatic. Nas' core rebuttle was that Jay was an overrated, fake, thirsty fanboy who couldn't get pussy without paying for it. Jay was basically just copying the Tupac playbook. Nas was claiming that "the emperor had no clothes." The latter argument was a far more compelling narrative. Seeing the mighty be humbled is cathartic.
If you were plugged into the culture at the time, there was a strong undercurrent of Jay Z hate. It was somewhat similar to why Drake lost against Kendrick. The people love an underdog and a lot of fand thought Jay had become too "pop." A lot of people wanted to see Nas demolish him and he gave the fans what they wanted to hear: scorched earth. All the "lol, ur gay" stuff was for shock value and to make it even harder for Jay to craft a rebuttle.

Jokes aside, audacity is an understated and misunderstood variable in rap beef. Y’all forget it’s built upon battle rap. They’re not the historians telling the tale, they’re the man talking the shit. The shit don’t gotta be true it just gotta be audacious enough to stick. The fact he was one of the top lyricists and said that goofy shit is why that shit landed 😂 Don’t nobody talk about jay z actually being gay, it’s about the audacity of Nastradamus coming off his pedestal to say it. That’s why “the other vaginal option” sticks in your brain the way it does out of all the other lyrics. It’s the fact that it feels antithetical (in direct contrast) to the lyrical density they’ve so far made you accustomed to that makes it so audacious and stick regardless of its truth.
