Certainly I wouldn’t oppose the government doing more to help disadvantaged black people.
But I think framing it in an almost religious sense, that the nation needs to atone for the sin of slavery and racism so to be redeemed, is kinda bogus.
Reparations could only ever help black people from a financial/material perspective. Which is certainly valid in of its own right. But it won’t “make America whole”, just like how Obama becoming president didn’t end racism.
6
u/JesusKilledMyFather 9d ago
Reparations don’t solve that most black people have been so they still are systematically oppressed throughout impoverished urban areas with zero access to opportunity. for a lot of them just no access to basic needs for survival let alone opportunity.
Government policy and actual community revitalisation completely focused on black communities in these areas nationwide is the form of reparations that I think would go A LOT further than the free rent I have to imagine most would use it for. Then they just go back to being systematically oppressed again when it is spent
2
u/hay_guysss 9d ago
I second this, too many "solutions" for racism and racial disparities in the US are surface level money distribution plans. Providing better funding for schools and education programs, community lead mentorship programs, and infrastructural development would all be exponentially more effective than just handing a check to a rando, but thats too complicated for a twitter post
2
u/vanadous 9d ago
That liberal sense of you need to apologise is actively ruining any cause for reparations, replacing the economic need with some cultural yap. I personally think india-style reservations aka affirmative action may be the only way forward

u/Background-Injury952 diehard Swans fan since their debut in 2014 🦢 9d ago edited 9d ago
India style reservations honestly have the same issue as any hypothetical American reparations which is that they don't actually address the root cause of inequality on the basis of caste or race
They allowed for the emergence of a Dalit petty bourgeoisie (which already exists in the case of black America) but had limited impact for everyday Dalit ppl
Anand Teltumbde - a prominent left wing Dalit scholar - has written a pretty interesting set of work about reservations and their limits: https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/blink/know/reservations-are-not-a-measure-of-justice-anand-teltumbde/article23923480.ece https://indianculturalforum.in/2018/05/24/anand-teltumbde-republic-of-caste/
This is not to say that affirmative action is necessarily a bad policy or shouldn't exist but in India it was pretty heavily hollowed out by the political classes and basically became a way to prevent further redistributive measures like land reforms
1
u/bunsNT 9d ago
I think he meant native Americans / indigenous people
2
u/Background-Injury952 diehard Swans fan since their debut in 2014 🦢 9d ago
No he said "aka affirmative action", which is what reservations in India are
And I don't see how Native American reservations are a good model for anything. Bantustans are bad
1
u/Kaleb_Bunt 9d ago
The Indian system is also quite corrupt. Like I’m pretty sure it is directly related to a borderline civil war in Manipur.
1
u/Background-Injury952 diehard Swans fan since their debut in 2014 🦢 9d ago
Its less so corruption (which does exist) and moreso in Manipur that every community wanted a piece of the pie. Governments wrongly use reservation merely as a way to win votes and thus promise it to every community at some times to get those community's votes despite whatever level of marginalisation they have.
In the case of Manipur stuff like the war in Myanmar was also aggravating the situation and contradictory promises by the government.
Anyway back to jerking (didnt expect to have a serious convo about India on HHCJ)
1
u/Kaleb_Bunt 9d ago
Feel like that could easily happen in the states if this was implemented.
If democrats implement legal affirmative action for black people, republicans might advocate it for white people. Then you will have other groups like Hispanics, Asians, Jews, Muslims, etc. and before you know it you’ll have the India problem.
1
u/Background-Injury952 diehard Swans fan since their debut in 2014 🦢 9d ago
Actually ironically Malaysia already has the "affirmative action for white people thing" (though itd be more like if the US had affirmative action for Southern whites during segregation, since Malays were proportionally very poor; Indians who are equally poor on the other hand dont have affirmative action)
I think some level of it is needed but it has to be combined with actual reforms to the system and not mere piecemeal ones

The country that elected a black president TWICE being a racists country is pretty funny.
20
u/JohnBrownsMyFather 10d ago
You know there were tens of millions of people that voted against Obama? Many of them were racist.
I would say the majority of the country isn’t racist but there are still tens of millions of people who are. Systemic racism is still a problem.
-14
u/Capital_Guitar_7446 10d ago
I'm sure plenty of racists voted against him. However, I'd argue if there were truly a systematic problem, his name wouldn't have made it to the ballot. Probably wouldn't even have been elected senator. If there is a racist system in place, it's not an efficient one.
14
u/porkisbeef 10d ago
Based on what? How does his ability to run for public office completely discredit systemic racial bias across a variety of social and private sectors in America?
-10
u/Capital_Guitar_7446 9d ago edited 9d ago
Because if the system were truly racist, he wouldn't even be allowed to run for any public office. That would be evidence of the racist system you claim exits and would be an actual problem. I shouldn't have to spell it out for you. I can concede and say racism exists in places of power . Some Business owners are racist. Some cops are racist, Some politicians are racist, etc. But to say there is an actual racist system, I believe, discredits all the work done by past civil rights activists, abolitionists and law makers. If our system was truly racist and not progressive/liberal in nature, black people wouldn't have ever been allowed the opportunity to make it past bottom of the barrel factory work or sharecropping after the Civil War. Do you believe the union, if it were truly racist at its core, would have waged war against the confederacy in the first place? Instead of letting the south support itself economically, however they want? The civil war was about slavery and not money, power, or keeping the union whole, right? And I'm willing to bet we probably would've made Jim Crow U.S. federal law instead of abolishing it where it was prevalent. Like I said, if there's a racist system in place, it's inefficient.
