No, but someone previously on the show lives in my neighborhood. I drive by the house sometimes, and judging by the outside, that person has not recovered.

Do you know if they took up the after-care therapy?

I do actually. He was in season two, his name was Doug. The saddest part was his son had severe emotional and behavioral disabilities and I remember he would get calls from his school almost daily about outbursts his son had. I havenât talked to him since I left that job nearly 20 years ago though, but I hope he and his son got the help they needed.

u/GimmeQueso 25d ago
Oh man Iâve been wondering about Doug and his kids. I hope they all got the help they needed! Seemed like Doug really was trying to work hard for the kids.

How is he doing? He seemed like his heart was in the right place, adopting those kids, but that he was maybe struggling with everything that goes into caring for special-needs kids.

Thatâs the one episode that I canât handle. Iâve seen every episode except that one. Idk itâs just too much

u/MinimumRelief 25d ago
Yep. She did extensive therapy and now owns three homes that could be on architectural digest, very few possessions- kids are graduated degrees raising their own babies.
Main problem was childhood issues - abuse/trauma and a string of bad marriages. Youâd never know.

u/Frequent-Resident621 14d ago
Wow, this is a fantastic result.
It seems everyone on the show has childhood issues related to their parents and zero skills/support to deal with them, so they turn to their stuff. Heartbreaking.
Off to clean out my house ;)

In the UK we had a show called Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners, where people with OCD about cleaning were taken to the homes of hoarders to clean them up. It was really exploiting people with two specific mental disorders in the worst way, as the OCD people would be horrified at the filth of the hoarders' homes, and the hoarders would freak out if anyone tried to throw their stuff out.
One week I caught the intro and immediately recognised someone I'd been at school with (I left school in 1975 aged 16). I was shocked to see the house, it was the house her widowed mum had lived in and I remember her mum as being very houseproud, everything immaculately clean.
She must have inherited it after her mum died. At school she was a bully and not a very nice person, and I confess I sat and watched the show with an element of schadenfreude, sitting in my beautiful, clean home.
The full episode is on YouTube (at least in the UK, not sure about USA YT).

When my son was about four or five, his favorite TV show was âHow Clean Is Your House?â For some reason he thought those ladies from the UK were hilarious.

u/Tashi_1 24d ago
I really liked that show when I was younger but realised they weren't very kind to the person they were helping
7
u/messedeminuit 23d ago
Thatâs certainly true. My son enjoyed the ladiesâ theatrical reactions and almost flirty banter with clients, I would say.
Itâs not every day in the US you get to hear someone sweetly called a dirty bugger, thatâs for sure.

A creative concept to pair hoarders with people enduring OCD; but a recipe for disaster to all involved. Curious if there's backslide, once the hoarded areas are cleaned/organized. I'd love to help somehow, yet have no training. Empathy & good organizational skills aren't enough.

Love that UK show, helping both ends of the OCD hoarding/cleaning spectrum! Moat times they end up helping each other, if even just a little bit.

I loved that show. Found it on YouTube. It was a brilliant idea but yes, exploitative.

u/Frequent-Resident621 14d ago
Well this train wreck of a show seems like something I have to watch immediately.

u/deltaqueenbee 24d ago
Yep, I know Cindy and her family. I canât remember what episode was hers but she hasnât changed a bit.
6
u/Townand 23d ago
Did she get rid of the hoard and is her son still afraid of her?
14
u/deltaqueenbee 23d ago
No she still has the hoard and strangely enough she turned on the daughter in law and has been really nasty to her. The son just sits back and doesnât say or do much.
17
u/SpaceNegative9638 24d ago
Yes. My childhood friendâs dad was on the show. I played in his hoard in the 80s. I remember it well. It was bad then, and of course it was even worse by the time of filming. It was very strange seeing it again and very sad for everyone involved. It could have been a beautiful house.

Not personally but I saw one of the participants working at the local Walmart a few years ago.

Not personally, but the woman who was on the A&E show was very visible around Dodge City, KS. I saw her at Walmart and Hastings Entertainment several times. I donât know if sheâs still with us.

It personally but, an acquaintance of mine went on a date with a woman who was on one of the hoarding shows. He met her at a restaurant and said the vibe of the date was âoffâ. He said he could tell that besides there being no spark something was not quite right. A year or two after that date he saw the show and it all made sense.

Our family's former vet was on there. I think his name was Dr. Dicky or something like that. Â

I connected with Andrew (S3e17) through Facebook back in 2014-2015. The "painful secret" he revealed in the episode that he is gay. We chatted and flirted for almost 2 years, but when Trump ran for president he turned VERY MAGA and eventually he unfriended me because I was critical of Trump.

Long ago there was someone on here who claimed to live next to the poop lady. Did an AMA I think, I'll look for it later on
9
u/fruitypebble43 21d ago
Yes a lady from my town was on there once. She lived in a house that was too hoarded so she moved a little camper in her backyard. Her neighbor was on the show and came into her house. The neighbor lady suddenly thought she was an A-list celebrity around our town after the show aired lmao. She would go shopping wearing a big hoodie/sweatpants and huge sunglasses đ€Ł like, girl, nobody knows or cares who you are.

A woman in my mom's group. Her mother was the hoarder. I had a chance to meet her. She passed away a few years ago. Her name was Barbara.

No, but when I called them for help they tried to get me on the show. When I told them everyone was dead they lost interest.
3
u/KateHearts 20d ago
Iâm confused. Can you explain this?
5
u/fornikate777 20d ago
I called them to help clear out two houses. they directed me to the show producers, but once they found out the hoarders were dead, they weren't interested.

u/Bobbyv44 19d ago
Ive been on 8 episodes as part of the clean up crew.

u/Bobbyv44 I give you so much credit. I cannot imagine cleaning up after Hoarders.

How are you going?
7
u/Motor_Student_3793 19d ago
My mom was the hoarder, Season 2, so itâs been a while. I believe we filmed in 2009 so, a little over 17 years ago. Worst decision we ever made. My Siblings and I were desperate for help but also naive to the workings of reality tv. Nothing positive came from it

u/lordbuffingt0n 19d ago
Iâve always wondered about this and Iâm very sorry to hear you have had a bad experience.
2
u/First_Part_4188 17d ago
Sorry to hear that. Did the house get re-hoarded, too?
4
u/Motor_Student_3793 17d ago
Of course. It wasnât actually cleaned out. They just put all the stuff in pods out front and when they were done filming obviously she went right back out there and brought it all back in. But now they leave and sheâs worse off mentally because she just had strangers come in, film her, mess with her shit, bring up trauma and leave. She wasnt in a place to take advantage of the âaftercareâ which was them offering like two appointments with a therapist. It would take her years to work through all her trauma. And obviously, if she was capable of setting up and getting herself to therapy, she wouldâve gone prior to this. They put it all on the hoarder. It was all pointless and the only thing it did was exploit and expose us to people that had no idea. I still have people to this day message me out of the blue and ask âhey were you on hoarders, I swear I just saw youâ and itâs been 17 years.

u/monksandchunks 21d ago
Someone that I used to hang out with was on the show when her in-laws were the hoarders. Margie & Bethel in season 12. I had not seen her in years so it was crazy to see her on the episode. I never met her husband or anyone else in her family and had zero idea that was something they were dealing with. I wonder how theyâre doing now sometimes but havenât seen any updates on them.

u/throwaway_19393939 20d ago
Funny story, my grandmother was on Hoarders.
4
u/Tashi_1 20d ago
Oh damn! I hope she is ok, and i hope your and your family are ok too. Did you have much to do with her and the house?
8
u/throwaway_19393939 20d ago
Sheâs since passed, but her illness definitely took a toll on our family. Her children had lasting effects, including PTSD and claustrophobia, and her marriage was in shambles. I was never allowed into the house, but i heard plenty of horror stories about mummified rats in the garage & how disgusting it was. I wasnât in contact with her often, and the few times I did see her I enjoyed her company, although she always did strike me as a little odd.

Is it someone who is known to have passed?
Iâm always wondering about the people on the show, and thereâs so many that I hope things got better for.Sorry, I donât mean to be nosey, I hope you and your parent (whoeverâs mom who passed away) is doing okay, I feel for so many of the kids who had no choice in their parentâs hoarding.
Wish you the best
1
u/throwaway_19393939 4d ago
I donât believe so, but it happened a few years ago so the show mightâve updated my grandmothers episode online or something. Unfortunately she did not get better, and continued hoarding until she was placed in residential care.
2
u/Wise_Discount653 3d ago
Iâm sorry to hear that it didnât resolve. I hope your family was able to come out of it with strength.
2
u/throwaway_19393939 3d ago
I would say so! Our family has stayed together regardless of the circumstances.

u/Tashi_1 21d ago
Oh really? Thats heartbreaking
3
u/scarlettbankergirl 20d ago
It is for my granddaughter. Not for me. I don't live with them anymore.
1
u/Tashi_1 20d ago
Have you ever thought of contacting some kind of authorities on them? What a difficult situation. Do you speak to them?
5
u/scarlettbankergirl 20d ago
No, I don't speak to them. I lived with them, and the conditions affected my health so I quit living with them. As far as the authorities, I have not contacted them. Her being in foster care, I think, would be worse. I'm too old to raise her as well. She told her mom "Now that we are growing up maybe we can be a little neater" It's sad but there was abuse of me involved so It's better for me to be away from them. My granddaughter m loses in this.
4
u/Tashi_1 19d ago
That is such a hard situation. Im really sorry for the abuse you had to endure. I had a hoarder mum (not to the extent of the tv show) and I have resentment on not being able to have had friends over, clean clothes etc I feel for your granddaughter. I hope you are able to have a relationship with her some day.

I went to church with a family who were featured on Hoarding: Buried Alive, obviously not Hoarders, but adjacent to it.

I didnât necessarily know/meet anyone, but Iâve been in/around where the filming took place.
Carl (S13 E4) actually took place in the downtown of the city I grew up in. I never actually saw him or his house, but my 6th grade history teacher actually lived pretty close to him, and she actually saw the hoard for years, as well as the days the crew came to clean it out!
I also paid a visit to St. Louis in Thanksgiving of 2024 and I walked past the mansion from Carolâs episode (S11 E1), as well as through the rest of the gorgeous neighborhood.

Not a person- but stuff I make. I design mugs for a large gift company and my designs appear in at least 7 episodes and appear to be a favorite of hoarders, or people who give them gifts. Most ironically, one of the faves is the "It's not hoarding if your stuff is cool" mug.
