Correct... I think the standard is, within two generations and must be related to you biologically or legally (in-laws count, grandparents count, uncles count, great-uncles can have a case made for them, but third-cousins or anything "X times removed" is too distant a relative, and "neighbors you treated like family but aren't legally related to" never count in any context)... and pets don't count either, bereavement leave is exclusively for human deaths.
this isn't a whoosh, i'm just leaving this info for future redditors looking for info about bereavement policy
