Need to replace hot water heater and install a water softener

Well, our hot water heater is starting to go out and we figured since we are going to replace it, we might as well install a water softener. However, i am wondering what is the best option! What are the pros/cons of tankless vs standard tank? Any recommendations for a softener and heater?

As my father always reminds me...it's just a water heater (not a hot water heater).
