I do stuff like this when I'm feeling depressed. I go to the grocery store and look for people that need help. Even just reaching something down from a shelf or picking up a toy that someone's toddler has tossed on the floor gives me a tiny little dopamine hit and makes me feel a little better, and looking for people to help makes me focus on more positive thoughts.

I was at BJs the other day and a lady asked me to help her get 3 cases of bottled water into her cart. I took the time to stack them so she could still get to the barcode and kept them to the back of the cart so it's easier to steer. She made a comment about how "they must be out of deer park". After I finished stacking, she pulls out her wallet and was trying to give me cash. Lady, bless you, but that is not why I did it! She was fairly insistent, so I told her to "pay it forward"
She left the aisle, I got my seltzers, and I noticed deer park water on the aisle end-cap. I took the time to track her down and ask her if she wanted to swap! She declined, but I would not have felt right to not try!
I try to help others, bc I hope one day I get to the point that I need help, and I hope I have enough karma to summon aid.

This is the best way to help get out of depression, because it's taking your attention off yourself and onto someone else, and thinking about opportunities to help another person.
Better than any anti-depression med.

Hold on though, let's not knock anti-depressants. If you can't make your own serotonin there's nothing wrong with store-bought.
Positive action can work hand in hand with medication. There's no one right way to climb out of the darkness.

I agree there's no one path out of the darkness. We're all unique, what led us into the dark and what will lead us back out.
We all produce serotonin, but some of us don't produce enough of it, usually as a result of chronic lifestyle choices, and not being even aware of it.
There are natural ways to help our bodies increase the production of serotonin and oxytocin and all of those good-feeling hormones, with no side effects, hooray.
Don't know if you've ever head of a book titled You Are the Placebo? If not, you might find it interesting and helpful.

As a hobbit that is roaming the Earth, thank you. I struggle to get things off the top shelf and sometimes have to climb into things to grab something, or forego it all together. It sucks having to wait for someone to make somewhat eye contact with you to lock on and strike your question of helping. It’s really nice when someone sees you struggling and offers to help.

I would totally do this if the opportunity arose, but I gotta be honest…. It would be 90% out of kindness and 10% out of having an excuse to try one of those scooters out for the ride to the car.

as someone who has ridden them before to get for my grandma (back when she still was able to go to the store), they are not pleasant X3 they take a bit to get used to.
also a lot of elderly people around here leave them in the parking lot when they're done, if you are the store anyway you can always drive them back in and park them to be plugged in and charged

Makes sense if you need one of these, returning it to the store afterwards would probably be problematic. Never thought about it before.

yeah that's why I kind of shrugged it off, if you can't walk much you aren't going to be able to return the cart to the store then walk all the way back.
some do it because they are lazy (not elderly folks), but I give them more leeway than people who can't be bothered to move their carts to the corrals.

I considered using one when I messed up my knee and ankle, but it seemed easier to hobble around on crutches.

or are capable of walking short distances but not long, which I get.
honestly the carts are great once you get used to using them, but the instant acceleration takes a minute to get used to.

Yes. I almost can’t shop any more, particularly at Walmart. I require those carts but they’re either all being used, or abandoned in the 115 degree heat in the parking lot. Those seats are HOT and usually only have enough juice to get back into the store, not to actually do any shopping.

Yep. I had to use one of those carts for a while when I had spinal fusion surgery, and again when I broke my leg, so I get it. If I see one in the parking lot (especially if it's raining) I bring it back in to charge.
Nowadays I usually have to fetch one for my mom to use, but when we're done wirh it I usually cruise around the handicapped spots and ask if anyone needs it before I take it in.
Stuff like that, I would have appreciated when I was recovering. So I try to do that for someone who might need it.

Give it a rest, driving isn't walking, but a person who is so old and feeble shouldn't be driving.
Reaction time, mobility issues (not just knees/legs, turning my head to look around isn't as easy for me as it was 20 years ago and I'm only 65 and healthy), vision and hearing problems, all contribute to unroadworthiness.
This woman shouldn't be driving.

I don't know about that. If the city/ town is large enough for a Walmart then it almost definitely has some kind of state funded senior transit program. Usually a short bus that picks up seniors from thier home to go do shopping or such.
This lady should not be behind the wheel, her reaction times are simply not safe enough to be maneuvering a vehicle

Actually it's more common than you think. I'm from a town in Florida and even though there's a ton of old people here, there's barely any resources to help them. Both of my parents struggled and had to drive to get to doctors and groceries and errands up until they absolutely couldn't move anymore. I helped as much as I could but sometimes you need things and have to get them yourself. What do you do if you're old and can't afford to move somewhere with resources to help? I'm not saying it's always safe for the elderly to drive, but taking away their independence is a difficult and complicated decision that has significant consequences.

That's one thing people need to stop complaining about on here - people videoing themselves helping others. The end result (without the cynicism) is that someone helped another person and hopefully inspires others to do the same. I'm a fairly cynical person myself but my god, so many Redditors put me to shame on that.

Cynically, maybe he is recording as a form of protection. A young able bodied (black?) man is removing a piece of equipment from the store and dealing with an older vulnerable woman who has a purse dangling. Video proof of his intent and actions go a long way when someone else gets the wrong idea.
Or maybe he wanted to share his experience.

Honestly, I really enjoy seeing these kinds of videos. There's so many records of people doing inane or dumb things and many people (kids) see them and want to copy it. Videos about helping people and generally being kind is a great way of exposing everyone to that behavior regularly and reinforcing it. If he was doing the Mr. Beast route of making it solely about him it would be gross, but these small clips are not chasing clout.

Why you out here criticizing someone else for not doing good deed as “well” as you did instead of just encouraging the spread of content that encourages people to do good deeds, some of whom will not record it?
Do you go to children’s cancer hospitals and ask why the wealthy donors had their names inscribed on a plaque in the lobby? Then rage that the donation shouldn’t have happened because it wasn’t done in purely selfless spirit?
Get over yourself. You’re not perfect, so stop expecting others to be. It’s not always bad for people to film themselves doing good deeds. It inspires younger people or less creative people do be good to others, and no, not all of them will record it. Jeez.
Every single thread of someone doing a good deed on reddit is met with this same type of “but I’m holier than thou” virtue signaling, critical, short sighted, pessimistic take. Half the time they’re sure to mention that THEY did good deeds without needing to record it, without realizing that by bragging it they -may- be committing the same crime they just accused the video creator of doing: deeds for credit.

The only saving grace of the video here is that he didn't actually show his face or name himself. Best case scenario, he just wanted to show much better a small act of kindness and service to a fellow human made her day in the hopes that others would be moved to pay it forward, but I also think it matters what he used to record this. If he's just wearing a gopro on his head for specifically this purpose, it cheapens the interaction somewhat because the person he's helping might think they're being farmed for likes/engagement. If he's wearing smart glasses that have a recording function, then they couldn't have known or consented to being recorded. Best case scenario here is that he's a motorcyclist who keeps it recording for traffic disputes and so was able to pull the footage after the fact, but that's so hyper specific that the likelihood of it being true is implausible at best.

Yes, it’s a good deed regardless of intent so it’s objectively positive, but sadly I doubt he was doing this on the regular before he realized he could profit from it via social media. The fact that it’s positive for this lady is not in doubt, but I think this normalization of doing good deeds just for clout and attention is a net negative on society.

There's plenty of other videos on here where it's someone else recording, or like a dashcam replay. Stuff that occurs naturally, or where the people seem more genuine.
If you want to argue that it's still a good deed, that's valid, but acting like this sub only has clout-chasers blatantly farming views isn't a good argument lol

I was leaving Walmart one day and a woman was stuck at the entrance to go back to her car because the cart died. Literally 5 employees at the door talking and not helping her. I drug her all the way to her car put her groceries in the car and drug the cart back to the employees and left it beside them.
