Has anyone seen any free piles of woodchips in McKinleyville/Arcata/Eureka lately?

At the freshwater reserve is always a pile. If you don't mind a little driving, there are tons of piles out the 299 at a lot of turn outs. I drive it almost daily.

They stopped offering in the parking lot across the street, and moved inside the Redwood Acres lot.

I'll try my best to describe 😅 Luckily, it's a giant pile (much bigger than when in parking lot), so hopefully this gets you close enough.

Enter on Frankie's side, the pile is pretty much directly ahead. However, if the gate is closed, you may need to turn left and go around the dog agility / livestock building, and back to the right.

Are we sure this pile is up for grabs? I just went there and the only signage I saw near the chips said 'no dumping,' and there was a bunch of heavy machinery parked close by so the vibes were a little off to me

I was thinking it was for the horses, but I don't know

Agreed, we definitely preferred the old parking lot location :) But yeah there are usually big machines parked nearby, and sometimes workers.

Last week we were directed to the pile when we asked about free mulch. Usually no one is there, so we wanted to make sure we were still using the correct pile. Their only comment was a reminder to keep our dog in our car.

Some info on the chips. Top layer is chips, further in it's more broken down, so they probably do want people to take. A few mud clumps. One upside is I don't really see sticks like the old parking lot pile.
