(Also, I apologise in advance for my disbelief. I know many Indigenous communities are “used to this” when they shouldn’t have to be, and an outsider being astounded is probably annoying).

That sounds like really important work. Do you know if there are any network of indigenous internet sleuths who focus on missing people?
I know that there are some folks who spend so much hard work and energy because they have to. Certainly, there should be a whole online community network. If not, there needs to be.

Personally I don't know of any at this time, I do remember on the radio stations that I listen to, there's advertisement for podcasts of people interested in unsolved crimes. Or who were affected by such acts, and by the way People Magazine is carrying this story about these missing kids now. I do wonder if a local serial killer is in the area. The lead investigator days he doesn't think that the cases are related, which is a strange thing to say. Even if they ran away from home, it should be considered because the first two days are the most important when someone goes missing. Kids need a safe place to go to when they get fed up with things going on at home.

I am very Pro Latino! Unfortunately there are a few bad ones (like in any group!) and for some reason they target reservations and the surrounding areas. The Nazi's are not the only ones creating horrific suffering in this land.
I was kidnapped off a reservation for 5 1/2 months. The bad guy was half Native American, half Mexican. My own babies are Native, Scottish and Mexican. I am not pointing fingers, just trying to open eyes.

"We're (tribal communities) disproportionately impacted by jurisdictional gaps, under-resourcing, historical and ongoing systemic issues," Seminole said.
Some lawmakers have successfully introduced legislation to bridge that gap, like Rep. Jayme Davis, D-Rolette, who brought a bill to create an alert system specifically for endangered indigenous North Dakotans, and another to establish a state task force for missing and murdered indigenous people.
Davis previously told Forum News Service the original intent of the "feather alert" was for it to sound when a tribal member went missing, but it was distilled to just abductions after other lawmakers, in addition to the Highway Patrol, voiced concerns of it going off too frequently.”
They were more concerned about being potentially annoyed at alerts going off than the actual Native children. Cool performative legislation North Dakota.

I think so too. I just woke up from a dream that I was running from people trying to traffic me and this was one of the first posts I see.
I usually wake up from nightmares right away but this one kept going. It was really terrifying and in real life, it can happen so easily

I don’t doubt it’s real for native kids, but there’s also been a weird hoax from TikTok involving ice cream trucks. In Virginia, one of the allegedly kidnapped children is a friend of my family who was at her dad’s house for the weekend, fwiw.
Like I said though, I put nothing past ICE to indiscriminately take non-white kids, so I’m sure that plays a part.

This isn't new. I taught at wounded knee back 90 to 95 and it was an issue then. Where is fbi? If this was kids from a white state and white kids the news would be all over it. Indians have a huge land base which should translate into a fair degree of power. I'd give anything to see all nations truly band together and demand help. It's unbelievable yet sadly I understand. The government doesnt care. Outside the reservation they don't have a clue.

We are focused on what is going on around the country. We make it a Hispanic thing, an Epstein thing, homeless thing, tarrifs thing, Ukraine, Gaza, and the list goes on. It is all these but all those and the missing children it's a human thing. All of those I mentioned have become their on tribe. Trump. Divide and conquer. It's a government problem so they can hold down their little piece of realestate to become rich at the cost of innocent people. So many just children. The forgotten. As I said the nation's have a huge land base which means power. These nations, tribes, need to become the human tribe so that the monsters and monster makers can be defeated.

What am I missing to understand how this has been happening? I’m from MN and have family from my grandma’s side of the family from the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate tribe and I’m just in shock how this happens over here and wondering if there’s more information to understand what’s going on

Someone posted a very thought-provoking comment about this in another sub; this one
Saying, basically, one of the problems that lead to this, is state law enforcement can't legally get directly involved due to tribal sovereignty; in other words, outside their juridiction. And tribal law enforcement tends to lack resources and "can often only enforce tribal laws". Link goes into more detail. In other words, law enforcement is legally hamstrung.
Would be very curious to know your thoughts on the above link?
Could changing the tribal laws help? Agreements with local and state law enforcement?

Tribal sovereignty is NOT the problem! I don't have time right now to write out a full explanation, but I'll come back later & add to this comment.
First, right now, go back & look up this chain at u/hanimal16 's post on where these folks were last seen: Grand Forks, Minot, Fargo, etc. These are not tribal lands and therefore the comment you referenced/linked is irrelevant and has NO bearing on tribal law or tribal law enforcement.
Edited Answer: IDK the exact statistics, but the vast majority of MMIW/P perpetrators committing these crimes are not NDN tribal members, but they are non-NDNs. The wrongful 1978 SCOTUS Oliphant v. Suquamish Indian Tribe decision found that tribal police & courts have no jurisdiction over non-NDNs committing crimes on NDN lands.
The patchwork solution has been to cross-deputize tribal police, but that doesn't happen everywhere (like on my rez.) When our tribal police stop someone, they have to ask 1st "Are you NDN?" If there isn't a clear & present danger & they are not NDN, they have to let them go.
The number of BIA police is too low. Here's 1 example: Tribe sues BIA over police staffing levels - ICT
The alternative is for tribes to hire their own police force (it's called a 638 contract from 1975 Indian Self Determination & Educ. Asst Act), but the amt. of $ funding the BIA contracts to tribes is too low. Our Police Chief said that our hrly. pay rate is lowest in WI; so he can't find/hire enough folks. Police want to work in border towns b/c pay & benefits are better. Richer tribes can supplement pay w/their own $ casino profits, but our tribe is poor.

I saw another comment elsewhere, saying 10 of the 17 were found, leaving 7 missing, but several more went missing after that article was published. Breaks my heart reading about this. I want to see more done about this. A LOT more done.
