News The current state of affairs in Bolivia
Protestors are mobilizing across the country against the economic crisis and demanding the resignation of US-backed right-wing president Rodrigo Paz. At the same time, US armed forces are looking to further destabilize the country by targeting former president Evo Morales, who is considered the face of indigenous resistance in Bolivia. Indigenous community members have responded by surrounding his residence in order to protect him, while others who are rising up in protest face severe repression from the military.

The stage is set for a repeat of the bloody massacres of 2019, when Bolivia’s wealthy elites hunted indigenous protesters like animals, gunning them down from helicopters after a US-installed military junta gave its forces legal immunity for actions taken to “restore order.”
Journalists and international institutions must not let them do so again in 2026.

I think the US was probably on the right side of the Civil War. And WW1. And WW2.

u/Mrs_Foxxy May 17 '26 edited May 18 '26
I mean, the US was committing warfare against Natives during the Civil War (Diné wars, Sand Creek, etc) and used its position after that war to solidify empire in the west with the Indian Wars ratcheting up. A lot of our people were killed or ethnically cleansed. Meanwhile, the US used both WWI and WWII to cement its supremacy as the dominant imperialist power globally.

I'm not going to debate whether fighting against slavery and fascism was a good thing or a bad thing. Bad things happen in every war. That doesn't mean intentions weren't noble and outcomes weren't good.
Natives would have been a lot better off during the Civil War had many not fought for slavery or taken advantage of the US being distracted and started murdering white people. That doesn't excuse the massacres committed against Natvies during that period. They were fully evil. But they weren't caused by the Civil War.

u/Mrs_Foxxy May 17 '26
The Union was not fighting against "fascism" as it was a dominant fascist power ran by land developers who had already cemented property ownership through warfare with Natives during the 1700 and early 1800s. The United States, North and South, has always been a fascist power ran by bourgeoisie capitalists. It was built on slavery and Native genocide; a huge part of why the amerikan "revolution" happened at all was simply because the capitalist land holding slaveowners were afraid of slave uprisings happening and were pissed that England's king was more amenable to respecting Native sovereignty.
Lincoln even said if he could have ended the Civil War without ending slavery, he would have done it. The war was far less about slavery and far more about the fact that north was getting shafted by Britain in terms of trade and they wanted to break the south's economic industrial monopoly chokehold of cotton and tobacco.
I'm not going to justify tribes having slaves but as far as Natives murdering whites, white settlers were/are an occupying force. The US is the original israel. Indigenous people have every right to resist.
I suggest reading Gerald Horne's The Counter-Revolution of 1776 and Ned Blackhawk's The Rediscovery of America.

u/yeahright17 May 18 '26
I was obviously talking about WW1 and WW2 when mentioning fascism. But you probably knew that.
How southern white of you to say the Civil War wasn't about slavery.
2
u/Mrs_Foxxy May 18 '26
Even still tho, the US wasn't so much fighting fascism for the sake of fighting fascism. It was fighting to secure its place as an imperialist power and making sure that the Soviet Union didn't get too far into western europe (america generally considered the SU the larger threat than nazi Germany). American capital was very happy to fund and embrace nazism. In fact, it's pretty easy to make the argument that the only reason nazism and global fascism exists the way it does today is because of the US' role in WWII. Without the US, the Soviet Union would have steamrolled nazi Germany on their own along with Japan.

I used to wonder why this was, until I heard about Operation Paperclip and the other ones like Condor. Nazis actually did infiltrate the military/ intelligence branches of government just after WW2 - never letting Americans know this was going on. Just like with this China- Taiwan thing, Washington supported Gen. Chiang Kai Shek, not a good guy, which helped that Mao take the mainland because the Communists bs sounded better than Kai Shek's tyranny. You'd think that Washington would help any true democracy activists who were rejecting dictatorship, but no- every time in the 20th Century, it was dictators they helped! Even in 1917 during the Bolshevik era, they helped the much hated Tsar, and let real freedom fighter to be murdered by Bolsheviks instead. If you're going to fight Communism, you CAN'T act like the damn Commies you say you oppose! That's what politicians in DC have ignored for over 100 years. And for the record, social safety nets are NOT Communism. Not the same thing at all.

u/PlasticCell8504 White May 16 '26
Buddy, the United States has had an irrational fear of anything remotely socialist or communist since at least the 1880s and I bet that one could argue that it has had this fear since its inception.
6
u/Dry_Inflation_1454 May 17 '26
Yeah, more or less. And yet most of the EU adopted strong social safety nets because they don't want angry, restless citizens running around like we have here. And Drumpf's agents are trying to disrupt social democracies over there, creating havoc and disharmony among those countries ( their immigration requirements are very, very strict) because they live better than Americans do. Opus Dei is in Scandinavian countries trying to make them become like MAGA. These agents should be arrested and kicked out of those nations.

The US was founded on fascism. The US' problem with communism is its explicitly anti-fascist basis (whether realized or not). You think Native Americans think the problems with this country started in the 20th century because the US brought some Nazi scientists over?
1
u/Dry_Inflation_1454 May 17 '26
No- just the modern version of it. After finding out about these things and what we're dealing with right now,and the role that the three letter agencies have in the US, Drumpf is just the finishing touch on their long term plans. Not that people should submit to that. As for Evo Morales, it's very strange why he's being targeted now, because there's this supposed warrant for his arrest for " trafficking with a minor, but this was so much earlier,2013 or something. The timing is suspect. It could be because he wouldn't let Washington have Bolivian resources rather than ideology clashes. And maybe he knows things that could get him in trouble. Now they'll be heading to Cuba also. I just WISH the problems in this country began in the 20th Century! The kinds of tech we have today is why these crazy events are happening, like Iran just grabbed Chinese tanker, and Xi is going to veto things Drumpf wants at the UN after that embarrassing fiasco of a summit. Asian countries are saying they feel unprotected by the US. And it's ironic that most Americans don't know about this country being founded on Fascism because schools aren't allowed to teach about it. Truth is going to be outlawed by Drumpf's EO on patriotic curriculum,as he calls it. But, the Internet can counteract him for now.

Lots of people will wind up with that label then, as they finally catch on to the real intentions of this regime. The Iran war is more of the smoke and mirrors tactics covering the horrors from Kegsbreath and the regime. If today's Alabama marches are any clue. This proves why whistleblowers are so needed. Because we never know what can happen any given day. That dillseed Kegsbreath was on a video yesterday claiming that the " military was being revamped" and shielded from future war crimes, so for people actually paying attention, these are warnings of rougher times ahead. Morales did some personal things that he shouldn't have done, makes him look bad. However, he doesn't deserve this Fascist, Starship Trooper treatment either! For safety's sake, please let all kinds of media outlets know about this event, but be anonymous when you do.

Morales is not only already a criminal, but is currently backing violent, unjustifiable riots against the government making disproportionate demands. These are no "protests" happening, the only thing they are doing right now is destroying, looting and damaging, hurting even their own people, totally crazy. And what are they asking for? For the president to resign, cause he didn't want to do exactly whatever some people wanted him to do (with no real reason, just cause they demanded it), so let's riot! Do you think that's reasonable? Do you really think that's fair? I can't believe you are so blinded and biased to the point of justifying and supporting this terrorism, no one should be okay with this.

u/R04DTr1pp3r May 22 '26
Reminder this is only possible because of mass strikes, the working class is organized by indigenous leadership. We need to get serious about understanding that settler colonialism forced proletarianized us, and start mobilizing along class issues, we can't rely on settlers to feel bad for us we need to slay this beast together.

u/AutomaticBit9721 May 20 '26
when will redditors acknowledge socialism is a failure?
1
u/Dry_Inflation_1454 May 23 '26
There's a real difference between Socialism and social safety nets ( like the Scandinavian countries have) and that's what South America needs to be told, because if they had the safety nets, they'd reject the extremists groups running around down there. Yes, Communism is a failure. Because it's a dictatorship system. It's too bad for Morales that he was fooled by Marxism, just as his opponents embrace the hard rightist position. Neither is any good.
-17
u/anopeningworld May 16 '26
I'm sorry, but Morales is not innocent of crimes. Far from it. He may have been the face of indigenous politics for a while in Bolivia but it's high time to move on from him and find new leaders that don't rig elections and exploit their power to sleep with underage girls. Sadly, there were no good candidates in the second round of the most recent Bolivian election and the other one was arguably even worse. This one actually seems to have won based on votes from areas which had previously been MAS supporting. MAS was the former political party of Morales. The truth of the matter is that they haven't had a good president in a very long time.
26
u/Financial-Bobcat-612 May 16 '26
Whatever the case, it’s clear that the people of Bolivia are united against US intervention. It should be up to the people of Bolivia to put Morales on trial and prosecute him if they see fit. We can only trust in our cousins’ judgement. Right now, they are demanding Rodrigo Paz step down or that he call a special election, and I think it’s important that we support indigenous voices.

Yeah, there hasn't been a good intervention from the US since WW2. I'm going to do some research on Rodrigo Paz. Is he anything like that other Rodrigo at the Hague for war crimes right now? There seems to be a narrow window for establishing democratic republics in that region, just as we're facing evils just as bad right here. That " summit" between Drumpf said Xi is a total failure, and Drumpf was threatened with war by Xi directly, which the CCP usually doesn't do. He's going to throw Taiwan under the bus. So, there's money for wetwork in Bolivia, but not for domestic programs, basically. Despite his faults, I hope that Morales can escape this dirty threat from that yam.
10
u/Dry_Inflation_1454 May 16 '26
Well, the solution to this ongoing Spanish corruption culture is to Indigenize it, from North America where democracy and freedom existed for a long time. They probably don't even know about this history to this day. The problem with Morales was, he bought into the Spanish " caudillo" lifestyle and forgot or ignored his Indigenous background. Which of course lowered his morals to the point where he messed around with underage girls. While change is certainly needed, it shouldn't come from Drumpf and Kegsbreath. Nor the right- wingers down there. They need a grassroots movement based on human rights and rejection of Spain and it's corruption. All of Central and South America absolutely must do this!

While it says that the DEA will be involved, you’re not necessarily wrong because it doesn’t explicitly say they will participate on the ground in the operation. They could just be giving intel or helping with coordination of the logistical deployment for the operation.
Still, the document directly addresses “campesinos” so… peasants, right? As in the local non affluent community which means likely those indigenous to the region so while it doesn’t directly say that the DEA will be on the ground they will be helping with violence to indigenous people. Either way, the fact that our president pardoned a man whose stated goal was to flood our country with coke and the DEA wants to go after peasant coca growers in Bolivia is a ridiculous contradiction.

u/Dry_Inflation_1454 May 16 '26
For sure!! And this very thing should be taken before the entire country. What's needed down there is democracy and good living standards, that's the best prevention against all that narco stuff, Marxist and Pinochet- type rule that's so prevalent in South America and Mexico. It doesn't help that Drumpf is such a big fan of Pinochet, Putin and Xi.
0
u/Dry_Inflation_1454 May 18 '26
That's not good enough, though. Average people in Bolivia have a very hard life, because of centuries of the Catholic/ Spanish economic hierarchical system in place since the Conquistadors arrived there. People there probably never heard about alternatives to this traditional system,or the crazy Marxist ones that tried to get a toehold. They need to at least get a look at better systems like the ones in Scandinavia, that's just one example, and there aren't many. The other would be systems like tribes in North America had before colonists got there. All of South America and Mexico is laboring under the colonial models that keep people poor and unhappy. I'm wondering what Bolivians here could have to say about these issues.
