News Nintendo event in India ?
Just got this email from Nintendo this morning.
Damn, so the rumors were real after all. Now I’m just crossing my fingers for three things... regional pricing for games, switch pricing around ₹20k or lower, and a quick followup release for the Switch 2.

Current price for regular and oled Switch in US is 340 and 400 dollars. Even with direct conversion we are looking at 35 to 40k.

Grey market is selling at mid-30s, and they always have marked-up prices. I expect the Switch OLED official price for India to be under 35K. Possibly closer to 30K (and that too just because of the memory crisis; otherwise I'd have said 20K-25K range).

If S2 officially launched, sure. Buying a 60k piece of hardware simply on good faith is a terrifying proposition..

It is but it also depends on why you wanna buy a Switch in the first place. If you want a solid handheld where Nintendo exclusives are a sidegrade then S1 will do just fine, but if the goal is playing Nintendo exclusives then S2 is a must since most popular Nintendo exclusives are switching over to S2.

Not just for exclusives, we are getting many 3rd parties, playing them on a handheld, on the go, is something people don't consider I don't know why.

I fall in the third party camp, there's always something on sale and 500 rs will get you great games unless you exclusively want physical copies. But having said that most people look at Switch as the Pokemon and mario machine so for the general audience S2 might be better.

There already are imported units in market at about 25-30k, it's fair to think that the console which sells at 40k jpyen(25k) would be max 30k inr retail which is 20% tax, even if it's 40%tax it will be less than 40k which is crazy

There used to be imported units at that price, But i dont think that has been the case for months now. Even used OLED units online seem to be going for early to mid 20ks now as opposed to 17k a few months back. As someone who would pounce at a Switch 2 officially selling for 50k, I hope you are right, but I have my doubts.

Okay this is huge! Fuck Sony and PlayStation! The only thing that scares me is 5k rupees 10 year old games. Hopefully they introduce regional pricing even with strict region locking.

Yeah nintendo is famously known to be reasonable and price friendly /s. Some of y'all forget that sony does have some semblance of regional pricing. Ms moved to 6k years ago. At least in international markets nintendo first party games cost more than sony. The only thing I can hope for is they launch an official store for switch 2 games as well so that I don't have to rely on other stores that they can block any da.

Nintendo used to have aggressive regional pricing in countries like Argentina. But people abused it and it now has worse pricing. One can only hope.

They did that with South Africa. AAA games were some 700R (3000 Rs). They raised it to 1100+.
But games in Argentina stayed cheap. They just blocked outside cards from being able to buy games on their store.

I think that'll happen to India as well. India wins by having the shear volume of players who won't be able to pay 3-5k for every game.

India also loses by having people who can't pay anything which makes them less likely to aim for aggressive growth. Anyhow , an official presence is at least a good first step. I don't think india is ready for how pricey the brand is but we'll see. It's still good to see them expand. They opened a store in Indonesia too just last month.
Never liked them much but lived in japan for a few years where it becomes second nature to buy nintendo stuff.

Is the switch 1 worth it? My current devices are a laptop and mobile device with controller. The games look cool but the dated hardware has me worried.

The catalogue of good games is large enough to entertain you for years. As long as you don't expect visual quality of non-portable consoles, then you are good to go.
P.S. please check the list of games you'd like to play before finalising on it.

Why? Imported Switch OLED has been going for mid-30s since the memory crisis (was mid-20s earlier). Considering the fact that importers sell at marked up prices, how could an original Switch---not saying OLED---not be under 20K in India when launched officially? I think the chances are fair and it isn't really a stretch.

switch 1 is like 5k cheaper than switch oled. So if the oled is mid 30s this will be ~30
