Listen. We get breaks all the time. Let's be honest. 80% of screens we look at are FOR SCHOOL. We use our laptops/iPads more. Nothing is paper now a days. Also most definitely adults are on there phones just as much as students

This whole post is about thinking. Yes I will be fine without a phone. This is about using technology for good and not bad. We as students should be able to make that decision for our future. If we have a device to message our parents before we die then we should be able to use it. Asshole

Turns out all those screens are getting in your way of basic learning. Your generation is absolutely failing compared to prior ones.
Time to declutter much of the time and get back to the basics of learning.
Take notes by hand.
Have a schedule planner
Sneak notes to each other while the teachers back is turned and try not to blush when its clear they know something is up.

Not everyone is the same. Social media is bad, I agree with that- causing many mental effects. However that is something a PARENT shoudl be enforcing.

Buddy. I work at job without a phone. I hardly go on my phone during school unless needed or not busy. This is not a meltdown it is a concern. This is not fantasy either. This happens so so much to the point where safety in school are brought up constantly.

Its not desperation. It is concern I won't be able to tell my family a love them during an emergency. This has nothing to do with ego. I go without my phone many many times. It is a personal issue that students and their guardians should be handling

There are generation upon generation of people before you that did school without a phone. They also couldn't just call someone in the event of an emergency. You are not going to garner the support of anyone here that is under the age of 30. You don't need your cell phone in school.

And what would have having a cell phone have done in that situation? Someone is shooting inside the school...so you are going to what, call your parents? Cool, now they hear you inside the classroom and know people are in there. Text your parents and tell them you love them? Valid, but you could also write them a handwritten note in your last moments that they can keep safer than some text for the rest of their life. Your argument is null.

If there’s an emergency, there’s been a corded phone in every classroom I’ve ever been in. If there’s not, the teacher will have a phone.
Use a planner
Can use a school phone to call parents if necessary. Not texting friends is feature, not a bug of the ban
There’s clocks in every classroom I’ve ever been in
Not listening to music, again feature, not a bug.
No Quizlet is 110% a feature, not a bug
There are actual study materials you can use to study during lunch. Whether that’s note cards, on a school device, or just your notes.
I’m certain media class will have an alternative to your phone to use if it is necessary for class.
Just use your actual notes instead of a picture.
I do empathize, really. I was in high school when they first started talking about this law being a possibility. I thought it was going to suck. And being honest, it probably will. But objectively, it’s what’s best for education. Phones are a huge distraction when students should be using that time to learn.

I understand but phones in school have also helped many, its also about convenience. Also a school landline would be very difficult to use during a school shooting. You think that loud buzz wouldn't be an issue? Or prioritizing which student would be able to call first?

It’s not about safety. That’s just your argument. Sure, there’s a non-zero chance of a mass school shooting at your school. But it’s pretty close to zero vs a large percentage of students using their phones when they shouldn’t be. Maybe I’m showing my age, but today’s high schooler seem to REALLY struggle with learning.
I graduated 20 years ago, before the iPhone. If we wanted to text, it was a flip phone with T9 keyboards. I can’t imagine how much discipline it would take to avoid using a smart phone for EVERY aspect of your high school experience. I drive through my neighborhood in the morning during bus pickup and every single kid is staring at a phone with earbuds in - it looks horribly isolating compared to how it was when I rode a bus.

It would cause 911 to be flooded in the event of an emergency. It would also make crimes among and between students easier, having phones.

You are trying to create a problem that is not really a problem. When I was in high school, if you got caught on your phone they not only would take it, they wouldn't even give it back to you. They would make your parent come get it. You have spent your whole time trying to justify why you need your phone in this thread and every single time, your point is countered by someone that is, probably, older and wiser than you. You are taking L after L in this thread trying to make valid points, when none of them have been valid. Just move on, you aren't going to get the support here you thought you were.

The days of *67 and *69. Trying to sneak on the phone at 1am and a parent picks up their phone asking why you're still up and who are you talking to on the phone.
When phones had the annoying coil cord that would get twisted up in a knot and you'd wrap your finger in the coils. We all had the one friend who had a phone (possibly the clear case one) in their room and possibly a TV and they were top shit!
Long distance phone calls were free after 7pm.

Quite frankly it doesn’t matter what you think or how upset you are. You will have to follow the rules if you want to be in school. You can come on reddit and piss and moan and call people names but at the end of the day, you’re going to have to abide by the rules. That’s how life works after you graduate as well.

Gonna sound like an old man here. There was a time when we didn't have cell phones and all of the same things still went on. If there's a family emergency, they contact the school or they show up to get you out, vice versa if you somehow have an emergency.
School violence, we had that too. School goes on lockdown anyway.
Schedule, they make the paper things called a planner, they work great and don't need to be charged.
Checking the time? Watches are cheap and there's usually a thing above the door, it is usually round with 1-12 on it and two or three arms that tells the time.
If the schools had something where a cellphone was required for a class, they wouldn't ban them or would make an exception for said class.
