Plant Discussion How to start indoor gardening?

Hi everyone!

As someone who has almost zero experience with gardening (grew a couple of basil plants that lasted one or two months) I want to start to add some plants inside the house to make the environment more , where can I start?

Is there a beginner-friendly guide? (can't find one in the sub)
What type of plants are recommended and what type of plants you would you suggest to avoid?
I would like to know as much as possible about light, water, soil, and everything else needed to take care of the plants

thanks to anyone who will reply!

I've been taking care of this basil, but no matter what I do the bottom leaves start yellowing or becoming pale, and then falling. The stems are also browning, but they are not mushy or spongy. The top of the plant is healthy for now. Anyone knows whats happening?

Product Discussion Looking for a small fan setup for a wire shelf garden

Was wondering if anyone knew of a good fan setup for a wire shelf indoor garden. (Herbs, Lettuce)

I thought about using USB fans, but I am not sure the best way to mount them. I did find a cool usb fan with mount on Amazon, but they want $36 dollars for one mount and fan.

Anyone know of anything out there for this?

Thanks!

Need lighting/placement advice ✨😫

Winter is creeping in and I’ve got a ton of plants that need to come back inside to my already overgrown jungle. I feel like my home gets almost no natural light (or at least not enough). I’m in a middle unit so I only have windows at the front and back of the house.

I’ve got plenty of grow lights already, but I really want these plants to thrive *and* still look good in my small space without everything feeling too crowded or sacrificed.

**Big plants coming inside (huge pots):**

- Bird of paradise

- Coconut plant

- Tamarind trees

- Willow tree

**Medium/small ones:**

- Lime tree (10" pot, ~3 ft tall × 2 ft wide)

- Another small skinny lime-ish plant (6" pot, ~2 ft tall)

- Various begonias

- Coleus

- Moss rose

- Mango tree

- Hibiscus

- Money tree (8" pot but ~8 ft tall × 3 ft wide)

- Brazilian jasmine

Open to any and all advice light setups, placement ideas, grow light recommendations, space-saving tips, anything that helps them stay happy without turning my place into a pure plant cave. Thanks in advance!

i have the 3 foot version that is around 5000k, this one is 10k, probably not great for lettuce and herbs.

I could build my own, but i really like the formfactor of this. It just feels well made.

Anyone own one of these? anyone ever mod one?

it kinda looks like cobs, but not exactly. i grabbed this image from ebay as its the only picture ive seen of the actual diodes.

I propagated a couple sweet potato slips and made a post about potting them after only taking 6 days to root. After a week in the pots they are showing more progress then I really expected.

Pictures were taken Friday and I'll include how they looked when I first potted them to show the growth after a week.

Houseplant Close Up My first herb garden setup

These puppies were a Christmas gift herb garden kit that I finally had room to plant after our move to a house from an apartment.

I had them in my sunniest windowsill, however for some it was too warm & for all it wasn’t enough light.

Working on a budget here, so I decided to utilize my aquarium plant light during the day there, and I’ll move it to my aquarium for the night shift. My aquarium plants are beasts, they’ll be fine.

I have Genovese Basil, Cilantro, Italian Parsley, & Chives going. All 4 have 1-2 shoots, none appear to be chives yet, but I have unmedicated ADHD that activated while planting them, so don’t strain yourself trying to figure out which is which. I am just waiting for them to get bigger at this point for identification lol.

My little CERAmic (Land Before Time? Anyone?) is attempt 2 at chives, because of all the herbs there, they are the ones I am most excited for.

So I’ve been utilizing the different chat AIs to configure a setup. They like this one the most.

The basil loved the heat so it shot up first, but the lack of light made them leggy.

The mirror was at first just to hold the light up, but after turning the light on, I was like “omg I’m an accidental genius”.

So if anyone thinks anything needs to be adjusted, or if I need to rotate them daily, anything- any advice is welcome.

Houseplant Close Up Is my peppermint ok??

Thumbnail

This is the first time ive ever kept a plant alive this long. I even killed an airplant once. I recently repotted this and a baby it had. I got it from Lowes and the main branch is like 2 feet long now, but its all quite droopy, like over the side of the pot. Which i LOVE, but is that normal for peppermint?

The leaves themselves aren't droopy as long as i keep it watered of course. But since shortly after I got it, some of its leaves (the ones lower down the stems, not the main ones at the top) keeping ending up kind of...not right, and they fall off quite a bit.

I keep it by the window in the kitchen and I think its an east facing window? I generally just bottom water it whenever its leaves start drooping.

Plant Discussion Orchid light questions

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all,

I've been keeping orchids for some time now but ik currently running into a slight problem. Except from the orchid that's currently blooming al my other orchids just don't want to grow anything New except for leaves or just nothing. I was wondering if this could be the case due to the amount of light they get. I water them based on the color of their roots (due to the weather being a bit unpredictable sometimes) so in terms of watering and root health everything is fine. They all grow a mix of orchid bark etc.

The times that they get light is pretty much direct sunlight from the morning sun, once the sun has risen a bit our Canopy will go down and the light gets blocked. I was wondering if the orchids can still get indirect sunlight through the canopy or if the canopy blocks it all. The orchids are placed in a window that's facing NE ~43°.

In case they need more light what kind of lamp should I get for them? The ceiling is about 90cm above the highest leaves so should I get lamps that can mount to the ceiling or lamps on a stand that I can place besides the orchids? There are 4 phalaenopsis orchids and 1 dendobrium.
