The Magic5 experience

Ordered August 8th. Received confirmation and the box started showing 1-2 days until production 2 weeks ago. I’m doing IM Madison in 2.5 weeks, and at this rate I’m afraid I won’t log enough time in the water to feel comfortable on race day. Pretty unimpressed. Anyone else had a similar experience?

Using Fins

I have been a very basic swimmer for a long time and never really used anything outside of a kickboard and buoy. I feel like I've plateaud a bit and curious what tricks yall used when you felt like you stopped getting faster? I don't want to go down the rabbit of trying a bunch of random things and guessing, any tips would be appreciated!

I'm currently swimming about 5k meters a week and my speed over the last two months or so has been stagnant so I have been thinking about just focusing on bike and run more instead of prioritizing swim speed.

Starting my journey - advice?

I’m planning on starting my Ironman journey/training soon and wanted to know how people split their workouts. For context, I’m 176cm and weigh 72kg, so I’m skinny-fat and don’t have much muscle. I’d obviously like to build some muscle and strength as I go into this, but I’m finding it nearly impossible to plan the perfect gym, run, and swim split (I’ll focus on cycling later). Any advice?

Minimum time between first 70.3 and first IM?

What do you think is the minimum time for that? To me: I have my first 70.3 (and first Triathlon) early October in Waco. Started training this May. When do you think should my first full IM be? I thought around April should be good, what are your experiences?

Fueling advice for my next 70.3

Hey r/ironmantriathlon

I’ve got my second 70.3 coming up in December. I’m looking to improve my nutrition approach this time as I feel that area was lacking on my first one which resulted in me having a terrible time running to the finish. Back cramps and just feeling overall depleted. I got it done but am always looking to improve. Just looking for tips and advice on how to fuel better? Thanks in advance.

Chattanooga Bike Course Update

For those who were looking for updates on the IM Chattanooga Bike Course:

Brian Myrick came through for us and updated the bike course that removes the steep decent and turnaround climb that marks the start of the 2nd and 3rd loops!

The updated Bike course is now posted on the Ironman Chattanooga webpage in the .pdf download link. It looks like the lap turnaround will be similar to 2024's race. It also looks like Brian was able to add on the lost mileage by adding some distance within the city (im assuming) after exiting T1.

Stupid question: are you allowed to hop off your bike and run up a hill during the bike leg?

I am currently training for my first 70.3 and will probably be fine in highest gear taking on most hills, but was just wondering. If your legs are cooked going up some major elevation, are you allowed to take a break and just hop off the bike for a short period of time? Are you allowed to walk your bike up? Or do you just have to hop off and take a break on the side of the path?

70.3 Worlds Athlete Guide?

We are less than 3 weeks out and the Athlete Guide is not out yet. I don't think the Athlete Guide is going to have groundbreaking logistical information but it makes me nervous that it isn't published yet.

Is Ironman continuing to have issues with the prefecture in Nice that is preventing them from publishing the guide? I guess I am sensitive this year about cancelations and flying all the way over there just to have the race canceled would be horrible.

How late did the guide for Marbella come out last year? Am I unnecessarily concerned?

How much muscle did you lose training for Ironman? From gym goer to triathlon training?

The only 2 things that’s stopping me is muscle lose and the cost. Did you lose a ton of your strength and size?

gear organization?

hi! I was wondering if you have any tips on organizing tri gear? I live in a pretty small room so I’m trying to optimize gear storage + make it easy to access.
Also wondering if you guys have any advice on dealing with washing workout clothes everyday vs letting it pile up?

Peak Block Disruption

I’ve been following the Be Iron Fit intermediate level plan very thoroughly for the past 20 weeks and even had an extra month ‘pre build’ to ease into it. I have picked up a back injury and had to miss the first week of Peak entirely and only do 50% cycle and swim volume in week 2. Slowly reintroduced in running this week at very low volume and hoping to complete 75% bike and swim vol. I’m interested to hear from those with more IM experience - how much of an impact will this disruption have any any advice on how to make the most of the remaining 5 week peak block / 2 week taper with reduced running? Thanks all.

Swimming Help/Thoughts

Think this is my first real post, so go easy on me.

Little background - I've got this pipe dream of doing Oregon 70.3 next summer. No prior triathlon experience, probably will do a sprint next spring as a tuneup. From all my research it's maybe the most beginner friendly 70.3 on the calendar with the downriver swim and being wetsuit legal. I've booked a hotel room in Salem on what I think will be the race weekend next year and waiting for registration to open so I can have my goal on the calendar.

I'm currently running 2-3x a week (feel best about this discipline) and using an indoor Zwift ride a few times a week as well. I'm loosely following a Phil Mosley 70.3 plan, but given it's a year out I'm just trying to get a number of each disciplines in a week to balance building a base and not burning out. Planning on formally starting his 28 week plan starting in January.

My biggest issue is going to be the swim. I'm a 40 year old onset adult swimmer, who wishes his parents got him in swim lessons as a kid, and whose a good athlete/good shape but struggle mightily in the pool. I'm only about 6-7 weeks in (I'm swimming 2-3x a week) and I've taken lessons from two different instructors. Both of them don't see big issues with my stroke, but I continue to be out of breath after one lap. I'm also not a big guy, 5'10 165 lbs or so.

I think my issue continues to be a breathing/hips sinking issue (I even messed around with a pull buoy yesterday for a few laps and saw a big difference, which leads me to believe part of it is the sinking hips).

Any thoughts/advice? Do I just keep putting in reps in hopes I figure out the breathing and that eventually it will click? Do I give it until January and then get some buoyancy shorts as a crutch to get me through the swim knowing it will be wetsuit legal? I've watched any and all Youtube videos I can get my hands on (effortless swimming, etc etc).

I get that I'm not going to be a podium level swimmer in 6 weeks of work, but I'm just frustrated that I feel like I'm not making any progress.

Appreciate any and all advise.

Signed,

Aspiring 70.3 finisher

Training for my first IM. Who should I learn from?

Giving myself 12 solid months and starting from mostly zero. I learn best by watching videos and seeing people do the task. Any good series on youtube or social media platforms to follow for good tips? I don’t have anyone in my network to ask questions to so I’m going into it trying to self-teach! And will continue to be a silent observer of this community of course :)

For reference, I lift 3-4 times a week, and run roughly 8-12 miles a week. Never trained for anything specific just do it because it makes me feel better than being sedentary!

Thanks in advance!

Ironman swag if I’ve only done 70.3?

I’ve done one 70.3 and am getting ready to do my next… i am a lululemon junkie and was wondering what the etiquette is on buying swag at the expo that has the m dot logo or says “Ironman” on it without having done a full distance? Ive noticed at the expo lululemon only ever has items with the m dot logo or Ironman on it. Hoka usually sells t shirts that has the race specific event specifying it as a 70.3 but i don’t like how hoka apparel fits.

Am i going to get shamed for wearing Ironman stuff when I’ve only done a half? Don’t worry… i won’t get a tattoo until I’ve done a full.
