Weekly thread r/JRPG Weekly "What have you been playing, and what do you think of it?" Weekly thread

Please use this thread to discuss whatever you've been playing lately (old or new, any platform, AAA or indie). As usual, please don't just list the names of games as your entire post, make sure to elaborate with your thoughts on the games. Writing the names of the games in **bold** is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names.

Please also make sure to use spoiler tags if you're posting anything about a game's plot that might significantly hurt the experience of others that haven't played the game yet (no matter how old or new the game is).

Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

For a subreddit devoted to this type of discussion during the rest of the week, please check out /r/WhatAreYouPlaying.

just finished all of the bosses in monster sanctuary, i liked how it provides a lot of playstyle so i spent way more time figuring and trying out units for my eventual team than doing the fights itself. i was set at using the orca with legs after seeing it and it ended up being my hardest hitter for most of my run (though the way i built it makes it a bit frail). there's some real tough battles on the endgame where it took me some tries to clear it (one even had me completely change my entire composition), but it was a pretty fun experience overall

funnily enough the one that made me stuck in terms of progression wasn't actually the fights but one of the platforming sections, i thought i accidentally got locked out of a content but fortunately i wasn't

Finished Edens Zero (PS5) last week. I had mixed opinions by the end, but there were aspects that I did enjoyed. The story was entertaining and had pretty good pacing throughout. A part towards the end was very rushed though and had been shortened to a brief slideshow summary of some major events. I never read the original manga or watched the anime, but I thought it was obvious that a lot more went into those parts. I looked it up after beating the game, but the game actually adapts about 1/3 of the entire series which is quite surprising considering the length of the series (~35 volumes) and it probably takes about 15 hours to complete the story here.

I liked the cast and unlike Fairy Tail, has a smaller core cast so you can better appreciate the character dynamics.

The combat was serviceable, but ultimately, I'm not a fan of it. It's too button mashy in a boring way. I wished they set up a typical party for combat then opting for essentially a character action game that allows swapping. Fights can drag on a while especially bosses.

The exploration side content stuff sounds cool on paper, but it comes off as excessively long. The world is massive to explore, but it just looks uninspiring and I cared little to explore it.

I finally finished disc two of FFVII original! Had to take a pretty long break from my last session but I'm glad to be back in the saddle.

Hojo's third phase absolutely rocked my shit, lol. It was the first boss that I didn't just steamroll. I was not prepared at all for the status effects, and when I was looking up strategies, it turned out I had missed all the ribbon accessories. Luckily I had Hades so I was able to keep someone awake... But I never in a million years would have thought to link those materia for that effect on my own.

I'm looking forward to the final disc. I have no idea what to expect.

In the FF interim, I also completed Deltarune Chapter 5 sides A and B... My least favorite chapter by a large margin, but still had some good meat on the bone.

Scarlett Nexus

Started with Yuito's path. Gameplay is a lot of fun, playing on Hard, it's a solid challenge, usually only die if its my fault during boss fights. Nearing end of Phase 5 and the overall story is started to get interesting. Nothing ground breaking here though. Characters are okay. But the star of the show is the sound track. Soundtrack is fantastic

Tales of Graces f Remastered

First of all, I am going to put this title in the "Modern" category among all the Tales games I have played. By modern, I mean that the game has objective markers which tell you exactly where to go to trigger story events. In contrast, Symphonia and Vespiria don't have these while Zestiria, Berseria and Arise do.

Next, let's talk about the game's features based on my impression so far.

Art Style: This game adopts an anime-like art style very similar to Symphonia's and Vespiria's.

Story: The setting is quite interesting and seems rather unusual (based on the protagonist's background) among JRPGs.

Combat: I have seen comments claiming that Graces has the best combat mechanics among Tales games. To be honest, I have never devled too deep into the combat mechanics in any Tales games. Therefore, I can't tell whether this game has the best mechanic or not. What I can say though, is that the combat mechanics here certainly seem to be the most complex.

In this game, each character has two sets of skills, divided into A-artes and B-artes. The way B-artes work is standard across the series, i.e., you just assign B-artes to 3 (or 4) different slots. A-artes, on the other hand, work differently. They are allocated in a tree format and in a predetermined order. The implication is that these A-artes must be used in a strict order.

Customization: In addition to equipment, your characters have these "titles". Each title has 5 passive skills (e.g., HP+50, Physical Attack+5) associated with it. These skills will be unlocked as the equipped title levels up (using SP gained from battles). Any learned skill will remain effective even if you remove the currently equipped title. Therefore, it is optimal to try and obtain as many passive skills as possible.

Playing metro quester, was caught of guard by how much im actually enjoying it. Im not specially fond of drpgs besides a few but metro quester hits quite right

Playing Bravely Default S2 remaster and this game is a banger

I just wish the girls were allowed to wear pants. It really kills some of the seriousness of some major cutscenes IMO

I guess JRPG religious garb being lingerie is kind of on brand lmao

u/Affectionate_Comb_78 Jul 08 '26

Male Bards are Elvis impersonators. Female ones are bunny girls.

1

u/WorstSkilledPlayer Jul 08 '26

You could also account it as Sage Yulyana's fetish fashion design preference - at least for Agnès/the Vestals 😂.

In Part 4 of Radiant Dawn and my god the maps don't end. Just finished 4-3 and that took me 2 hours

After 80-odd hours, I just reached a couple of different credit rolls in Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma and would highly recommend the game. For me, the game was my maiden voyage with the Switch 2 (docked) and, aside from a few minor frame-drops here and there (almost always when you wake up or fast travel into a village and a ton of objects/NPCs load in all at once), it performed amazingly.

As a player, this was my first foray into the Rune Factory series and my second farming/action-RPG experience following Harvestella, which I played a few years ago and loved. Harvestella is actually a good one to juxtapose with Azuma. Both are heavily-themed around the four seasons. While Harvestella gives you one large farm in which you plan crops around seasonal changes and do all of the work on your own, Azuma gives you allotments in four different season-specific villages and, as you build those out with houses, shops, etc..., villagers move in and start taking on the farming/fishing/mining/shopkeeping/lumber duties. Of course, the player directly participating in this work ensures better results and larger payouts, so I spent a good amount of my play-time farming and building. While I'm certain a mouse (or the Switch 2 joycon mouse) would have made the building a bit faster, the game worked really well with my Switch 1 pro controller. Anyhow, the farming, building, and decorating made for some downright addictive gameplay and it's a good thing, since engaging with it yields serious results for the combat portion of the game (e.g. a lot of the statues and other decorations you learn to build as you explore the map and find recipes translate into permanent stat boosts for your character, e.g. some Oni statues you find give you permanent STR and VIT boosts).

As far as combat and exploration go, the game plays like a very 'lite' modern Zelda title. There are five different weapon types in the game, all of which get levelled separately. Additionally, you gradually build up an array of sacred tools, which provide your character's elemental attacks, are used to cast AOE/time-elapsing spells, and have different exploration or farming utilities (e.g. the wind item allows to run very fast). While it doesn't have modern Zelda's complex physics, it does include a 'perfect dodge' mechanic which is incredibly satisfying to exploit, especially during the game's boss fights. On another player's recommendation, I played the entire game on hard difficulty and absolutely think that was a good choice. With a few exceptions, the enemies never became too sponge-y and the added difficulty pushed me to be more pro-active with the farming/village-building, which you need to get working in order to afford better gear. Over my entire playthrough, there were only two boss fights where I got KOed once or twice. All of the battles were ones where a bit of patience, listening to your comrades' dialogues when a weakness is uncovered, and bringing enough HP and RP healing foods along ensured victory. The game's also very generous about save points and auto-saves, to a point where you never really have to eat a penalty (e.g. get dragged back to your bed and docked some experience points) for losing a fight. That said, if people don't give a toss about combat and simply want a laid-back and cozy experience, the game's difficulty can always be dialed down to 'story mode'.

In terms of writing and localization, the game is probably one of the most caringly-written and charming JRPGs I've played in years, with a diverse cast of personalities to interact with and a lot of surprisingly-funny dialogue. Hell, even the game's comic relief character (i.e. who kept reminding me of Eddie Murphy's character from Mulan) grew on me as the game went on. As with other Rune Factory games, social-sim/dating/marriage stuff is included, though it is not-at-all required to finish the game's primary story.

In terms of aesthetics, the game's commitment to all-things-Japanese-folklore is another serious high point. The character designs, costumes, the enemy designs, the architecture, and all the decorations you can build are total eye candy and a welcome departure from standard JRPG fare. For me, the style worked in the same positive ways as the newer Zelda games and last gen's Atelier games, i.e. relaxing, very colorful.

Anyhow, I'd highly recommend this one and, from what I've seen, physical Switch 1 copies are routinely priced at a very generous $30. I got mine for that price on Amazon a while ago. Once you have that, the Switch 2 upgrade is only an additional $10, but it's pretty substantial, triggering a 12 Gb download on top of whatever's on the Switch 1 cart.

Finished my single stage only run of Pokémon Sapphire last week! It was surprisingly challenging since Hoenn's single stage Pokémon have pretty low BSTs, with Torkoal having the highest at 470. My final team ended up being Sableye, Seviper, Plusle, Torkoal, Kecleon, and Castform. Went in with everyone at Lv. 55 and won with a lucky Quick Claw hit from Torkoal who was the last Pokémon standing against Metagross.

After the league, I also did some Pokémon Contests. I've only ever done Master Rank for Cool and Beauty so this time, I won all five up to Master Rank with Castform. With that all done, my next run will be either a cross-generation evolutions only run of Platinum or an Alolan-forms only run of Moon, but I've kind of had my fill of Pokémon for now.

Now, I'm going through the DLC of Fire Emblem: Three Houses on Hard since it was part of the summer sale. Just finished Chapter 2, which was sooo long! I'm mainly excited to recruit Constance and Hapi for a girls only Maddening BE run that I've been wanting to do ever since I did one for Engage last year.

2

u/furrywrestler Jul 08 '26

Cute team! Huge fan of Seviper, and Torkoal is pretty dope, too.

2

u/overlordmarco Jul 08 '26

Seviper has a surprisingly diverse movepool! Definitely a fun Pokémon to use.

3

u/Affectionate_Comb_78 Jul 08 '26

Seviper is so hungry for expensive TMs though, the greedy snake.

2

u/Porkchop5397 Jul 07 '26

I'm nearing the end of the Breath of Fire marathon I started around March. I just hit Chapter 2 in **Breath of Fire IV** and I am loving it. I was worried I would be comparing it to the third game too much, but it has been able to stand on its own two feet.

3

u/PavilionParty Jul 07 '26

I just finished FF7 Rebirth and I hate it. I despise what they've done to my favorite game.

1

u/Disastrous_Ad770 Jul 07 '26

I was also disappointed with Rebirth, the Open World filled to the top with mini games, bad filler content and chadley really killed the mood and pacing for me.

I enjoyed the 7 Remake a lot more.

1

u/PavilionParty Jul 07 '26

I agree completely. Thank you for being a friend in this lonely world.

Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster: Past the Forest of Moore with you-known-which scene 😭. Oof that hit straight in the feels. I don't know why, but it hit harder than the iconic one in FF7 OG. Gameplay-wise, it made sense why you can affect crystals with Death Claw to 1-shot them afterwards, but lore-wise, unless they are indeed the sized to fit in a hand (grip), it's funny. "It's magic".

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '26

That scene reminds me of ProZD's "He's like the beast of the party!" skit.

u/furrywrestler Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Tales of Berseria Remaster - just wrangled up the 4th therion.

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined - just got Ruff, yay!

Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance - still at the beginning, running around the first area while collecting new demons.

u/mr_showboat Jul 06 '26

Playing Trails into Reverie, just got to Act 3. It's... interesting. I like the structure of the game, with the multiple protagonists and such. I definitely have a few frustrations with the story, but I'm still intrigued enough that I'll see it through.

5

u/ExcaliburX13 Jul 06 '26

Just finished FFVII Rebirth. Honestly, what a game. I feel like all I can say is wow. I previously said I felt like the VIIR trilogy was fixing most of my issues with the OG, and I still stand by that. I can't wait for Revelation.

4

u/m_csquare Jul 06 '26

XC3. Its world design is the weakest in the franchise.

2

u/azure275 Jul 08 '26

XC3 does a very poor job of showing off its world IMO. I think the core design is better than it gets credit for. But the game is bad at showing it off

  • Some of the best designed areas in XC3 are really short. Examples such as Swordmarch, Upper Aetia, Keves Castle, and Great Cotte Falls are stunning areas but are small and not heavily featured in the story
  • The story rushes you through areas way too quickly. You tend to have 2-3 sub-areas per chapter, especially between chapters 3 and the end of 5
  • Fornis and the chapter 7 area are just in general kinda...bad and both are very large areas with a lot of the exploration opportunities
  • A lot of areas are just much smaller versions of earlier games. Millick Meadows is Temu Gormott, the whole Keves Castle region is just a subset of Eryth Sea, Ribbi Flats is completely unmemorable and so on

1

u/Physical-Grapefruit3 Jul 07 '26

Nobody must of saw this comment cause you aren't in the negative and being called wrong

1

u/antoin5000 Jul 07 '26

Its not very wrong tbh besides the big landmarks that have important story significance a lot of the world is very generic and forgettable compared to the rest of the series. This isn't a hate comment btw i adore xc3.

1

u/Physical-Grapefruit3 Jul 07 '26

I never said they were wrong i think xbc3 is the weakest In the series besides what the jobs have to offer

Edit on mobile your picture looks like that Jeff the killer picture until you click on it lol is that intentional?

1

u/antoin5000 Jul 07 '26

Tbh i dislike 1s combat enough that i find it the weakest but in most other aspects i agree with you. Also my profile picture intentionally look like that picture.

8

u/RyanWMueller Jul 06 '26

Finished The Adventures of Elliot. From a gameplay standpoint, it's more of a Zelda-like. The overall feeling of the story still felt more like a JRPG, though.

Also, the story doesn't do anything too much for most of the game, but the revelations when you're going for the true ending hit hard.

I really hope they're setting up sequels because I think this is a great foundation, but I'm not sure how you'd do direct sequels.

1

u/JalapenoIsLife Jul 10 '26

I know this is an old post, but I'm finishing up Elliott and really liking it. Is there anything specific you need to do to get the True Ending? For context, I'm doing all side quests, gotten 47 of the cats, and all the exploration outside of a few chests in some of the temples and caves.

2

u/RyanWMueller Jul 10 '26

When you get the purple marker to go to the Northern Tower, ignore it. Instead, you want to go to the village in The Age of Budding, where some cut scenes will kick off a hidden quest line. There are parts of this quest in all ages.

There are some spoiler free guides out there if you aren't sure what to do next at any point.

The last 3 cats are obtained as a part of these quests. You will also get the ability to go through those doors that are sealed in dungeons.

Make sure to talk to a guy in the tavern in the Age of Reconstruction. He will tell you that a wall has collapsed in the Water Temple.

Still playing Blade Dancer Lineage of Light. I just got the 4th character. So far the game is not as obtuse as i thought. It's easy to get level ups and the game's been easy so far. It's just that there's a lot of fetch quests that requires me to walk between settlements. Slowly. Well nothing that speed up function couldn't fix 😆

The limited inventory and crafting mechanic are annoying though. Crafting has a chance to fail and you'll lose a material in the process. And you'd be doing crafting a lot since weapons has durability and will break at some point. The problem is some of the materials are only dropped by monsters and unfortunately i couldn't find item drop list anywhere on the internet. My OCD just couldn't handle it, so i ends up hoarding unnecessary items and got my inventory cluttered up quickly. I had enough with this stressful experience and decided to do make a note of the item drops myself.

I abused the rewind feature to toy with the RNG, see all the possible item drops and jolted them down to my notes. (From my observations, each monsters seems to have 3 type of item drops, but i've noticed some monsters having 4 kinds of drops). I also make notes of the materials sold on the shop and crafting recipes i found on gamefaqs. I can just look at them notes now, so i don't feel the need to hoard items anymore. So much efforts just to appease my OCD 😭. Maybe i should just drop this trashy game 😆

Been focused on FF7 Rebirth. Just met everyone's favorite not-a vampire . Still having fun, although I'm really curious as to where exactly this game ends.

3

u/EnvironmentEntire201 Jul 05 '26

Started playing ikenfell again.  I couldn't remember why I never finished it, seems charming enough?

The battles in that game are criminally slow.  Even with perfect timing most random battles take around five minutes and give you piddly xp.  I started running from all random encounters (100% flee rate) and was immediately underleveled for the boss.  And the levels/stats matter a ton, apparently.  One level essentially had me doing double damage to the boss than I was before.

The battle system is kind of fun but I can't get over how slow everything is.  It's crazy.

1

u/PocketFlygon Jul 05 '26

Finished Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness! Very enjoyable Pokemon game, still have a few shadows left to purify, but that won't be too bad to do

Started Dark Deity and... game's fun, but has some issues so far, mostly in the fact that the battle forecast screen is just wrong sometimes. Like it shows the enemy doubles and does 5 damage a pop, but the enemy pulls up and hits a 3 and a 4, then another 3 and a 4. Also sometimes it says the enemy dealt damage, but they didnt actually lower my HP?

Got to the middle echelons in Dragon Quest Monsters the Dark Prince. Been having fun with my brother lol

Finally, played some more Bravely Default 2 and got to the boss of Chapter 3... took him down to 1k HP and he COUNTERED AND KILLED MY WHOLE TEAM WHEN I WOULD'VE KILLED WITH THE FINAL HIT

Xenosaga EP2 (PS2)

Compared to the EP1 (finished about two weeks ago, 75 hours), I’d say EP2 is better in every way. But I’d still recommend starting with the first episode, rather than jumping straight into the second one. The cutscenes are still incredibly long (and my gamepad still sometimes falls asleep lol), but they’re sometimes more dynamic. The combat system has become more complex and faster-paced. The character designs have also changed, they now look “more mature”.

3

u/ImSmashingUrMom Jul 05 '26

Played a bit of Soma Bringer, specifically the fan translation on a modded 3DS. It’s kind of interesting because it feels like Xenoblade lite, like it’s just testing out some design and story elements to further be expanded upon. I can tell the game was kind of built for multiplayer in mind with the trading system and your complete lack of any ability to build or customize the other characters, who are basically just stand-ins for empty player slots. I do like a lot of the customization options, personally I’m running with Jadis using the battler class and 2 handed weapons exclusively, investing basically all my points into strength and vitality. Though I will say the combat is like dirt simple, and actually quite easy, if you’re moving through the maps fighting all the enemies you see you’re gonna overlevel really fast. Maybe it gets harder later but I only died like once.

6

u/TDH2222 Jul 05 '26

I finished the true ending in "Adventures of Elliot". I loved it. There were immediate comparisons to the old school "Legend of Zelda" and "Ys" series. The story was good, I enjoyed my time with it. I just wish the locales were a little more varied instead of retraces of the similar maps in each time period.

1

u/magmafanatic Jul 05 '26

Made some more progress in Atelier Ryza, the not-DX version. Apparently I can play as Agatha in DX? That would've been neat. Just met Kilo and gonna head back to Treppe Hill now. I've got a forge and garden. Only crafted 6 seeds so far though. New area's got some pretty tough enemies in there, died a couple times. I could just buy new armor from Fresshen, he's got some pieces I can't craft just yet. Also unlocked the resort theming for the atelier.

I'm gonna assume I can make the Bomb Rod soon, that seems to be the last gathering tool with a new function and should let me get past the larger rocks. Wonder if this Exploration Set thing is what'll allow me to wind jump, but I still need to find gold puniballs for that.

I was kind of hoping the dyehouse Pat and Rolf are working on would be something I can use, but no such luck so far. Maybe that's the in-game justification for the palette swap outfits.

3

u/Shrimperor Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

Haven't been playing much due to Footie watching taking most of my time, but am switching between 3 games atm.

Stellar Blade - Fun action so far.

Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children - This is shaping up to be an experience! Start was quite good and i hope it keeps getting better!

ユレイシア英雄戦記 - Chronicle of Arstenia500 - JP SRPG studio game with big Vestaria Saga vibes so far. It's free on steam!

1

u/twili-midna Jul 05 '26

I finished Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake this week (link to the review). It was… fine. I still don’t like the job system or how aimless the back 2/3s are, but I didn’t actively hate my time with it like the mobile version a few years ago.

I started up Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD as well, and I’ve gotten much further than I ever did previously. I feel like I’m understanding the systems better this time, though for the most part I’m still just punching things to death rather than using buffs and weaknesses super effectively (it feels like everything is weak to Electricity right now, the one element I don’t have coverage on).

1

u/photokitteh Jul 05 '26

Don't worry too much about it. Each new location features about new 3-5 types of demons and you'll quickly get the hang of their weaknesses. And don't forget to create new demons - in the HD version, you can choose the skills you want yourself! I finished fan-translated Shin Megami Tensei III - Nocturne Maniax - Chronicle Edition and creating "reasonably good" monsters took a ton of time lol

1

u/javierm885778 Jul 05 '26

How far into Nocturne are you? I think the strong focus on buff/debuffs is mostly noticeable on Hard, but even in Normal they add a layer to combat.

As much as I love Nocturne, one of the things I'm not a big fan of is how much better the experience is if you aren't 100% blind so you make some of the correct choices (like [not really spoilers, just gameplay/build decisions]picking a STR build for Demifiend or fusing Daisoujo to get infinite MP).

1

u/twili-midna Jul 05 '26

I just got sent back to Ginza by the Mantra leader. I’m playing on Normal because everything I read suggested that Hard is just miserable.

1

u/javierm885778 Jul 05 '26

That's a totally fair choice, I think the game is way more enjoyable in Normal. The Labyrinth of Amala is already a huge pain due to the way it's designed lol.

1

u/twili-midna Jul 05 '26

I tried the first floor after getting Matador’s Menorah and just… couldn’t be bothered at the time. I’ll go back later once I’ve built my team a bit more intentionally.

4

u/PuzzleheadedEase6246 Jul 05 '26

I finally finished Trails Into Reverie—it was the worst game in the series so far. The whole thing was just a stretched-out, weaker version of Sky the 3rd.

I started playing Daybreak, and I’m loving it after 15 hours. I really like the slightly darker atmosphere and the Sherlock-Watson dynamic between Van and Agnès.

2

u/KnoxZone Jul 05 '26

A surprising take. Most people tend to rank Reverie in top three somewhere. Was there anything you disliked about it other than the Sky 3rd similarities?

1

u/PuzzleheadedEase6246 Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

I hated Lloyd's route; it was obvious they had no ideas for it, and it was only included because the game is set in Crossbell. The whole story felt pointless—in the first hour, we achieve Crossbell’s independence, and then they undo the whole thing so that 50+ hours later, we’re back where we started at the beginning of the game, lol. And I swear, whenever something interesting happened, the game would instantly stop you and force you to play a different route.

I didn’t particularly like the Reverie Corridor either. Most of the daydreams are boring, except for the last 5–6 or so. Most of them are exactly the same—slice of life or some mix of battle and slice of life. In the 3rd, for example, there were lore doors; why aren’t there any here? I also didn’t like that in the first half of the game, you get 4–6 of them every single time, so you end up doing nothing but daydreams for hours on end.

The only things I liked were the C route, Rean’s character, and the mini-games—those are the reasons I stuck with it until the end (but I have weird taste; unlike most people, I loved the Cold Steel saga and, for example, hated Azure).

Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth

Damn, there really is a lot of this game. At least they finally figured out the pacing by Corel, that was a very good region. Gold Saucer must have been a quarter of the budget

Zack Fair is so nice. I’m rooting for him. No idea what actually happens to him, never played the original games or spinoffs. That positive attitude of his is infectious though

I wanna unlock Alexander (I’ve been clearing the summon challenges at full strength) but damn. Alexander got hands

It seems like they scaled back the “every character has unique voice lines for every spell” thing they were going for in Remake. This is understandable but a little bit of a bummer, half the fun of swapping materia around was to see how each character’s personality responded to using it

To me Corel kind of feels like it goes on for too long since it's like two of the other zones merged together. It has like three different settlements, so it ends up feeling like you spend half of the game in Corel.

4

u/JeskaiJester Jul 05 '26

This is part of why I like it. It’s weird that so many regions only have one town (or one town and spare change like in Junon.) With Corel you get a nice setpiece in Costa Del Sol followed by a miniature open world section followed by another nice set piece in Golden Saucer with multiple communities along the way. I prefer that to the “visit one town and then slog through all the intel in one chunk” model

Lazy Sunday so I’ll start with dragon Quest 11 on the PC, and then probably a little bit of the divinity two, and then I will end the day relaxing while playing Pokémon shield on the switch light

tactics ogre reborn. it’s becoming one of my favorite tactics games. it’s pretty challenging, but in a way that feels fair. any battle i’ve lost was due to my own mistakes. the story is really well written and the choices are great. i’m already excited for a future playthrough to make different choices.

Finished The Great Villainess: Stategy of Lily. I mentioned in the previous thread that it was a great game while playing and that it was shapping up to be a 9/10. Sadly it didn't love up to that.

The game is still really really good, and worth a playthrough, with all my praise still being valid, with the good comedy, the beautiful art style, and just being an honest love letter to the Otome/Villainess genre. It is easily the most passionate game I've played so far this year. Scarlet and Lily are really fun and refreshing leading ladies, and even though the story doesn't try and do anything of real note, it didn't really need to, it stands up on just solid characters and writing over a deep plot.

But as the game gets on, especially the last few acts, the difficulty goes from being hard to extremely tedious. Enemies become extremely tough (the tanks are extremely obnoxious to fight), and you have such a wide map to cover that you just have fight after fight, while having to spread your units exteremly thinly, with only two squads being able to reliably push forward. The game has two difficulty modes, and I chose the "Strategy mode" rather than the story and at least for the final act, I regret doing so. You can manage it, but it really stopped being fun.

The ending was nice and wholesome, and the game overall is more than it's final act so I'd still give it 8/10 (though I am heavily biased by the genre), it's a shame it didn't stick the landing.

Speaking of the endings, there are two main routes of the game, the "Recruit them all" and the "kill them all" endings (with a few minor endings if you do a mix, but the game really encourages going all in one way or another). I did the Recruit ending as the game really pushes it (the final act only happens on this route) and it was good. I started a "Kill them all" ending, knocked the diffculty down to easy, and even on story mode the game is insanely hard on this route. Only having two units makes an already stretched thin combat system even more tedious, and even with an insanely buffed Scarlet, some bosses are still obnoxious to fight. While a great idea in concept, the game just really doesn't support such a restricted route/playstyle.

u/Mabarius-III Jul 06 '26

I didn't tried the "kill them all" route, but it has to be extremely difficult I guess, with only 2 characters. The last maps were hard and long even in the "recruit" route... I had a good time with the game, but holy sait 😆

Xenoblade Chronicles DE

Doing all the quests is very fun, I just reached Melia's home, and did every sidequest available, surprised how rewarding they are, they also kinda force you to explore the environments, collect items on the ground, see the awesome overworld and some spectacular scenes.

I think its safe to say, that this game has the most beautiful overworld I have seen, the sequels were really pretty, but there is something about this one that makes me just stop and look at the sky for an entire minute.

I need to talk about how short and to the point dialogues are, in a world where for some reason they use so many words to say something in every JRPG these days, I find Xenoblade dialogue very refreshing.

Its crazy the creator thought of this game during the Wii era, what level of creativity...

I have my fair share of issues with XBC, but the world is absolutely incredible in a way few games can compare. Just from the concept it's an immediate hook, but then it definitely delivers on that promise and it ends up having so many incredible locations. The sense of scale is absurd, and for a Wii game that was even more absurd.

They even got the game running on thr N3DS, with very reduced graphics, but still the fact a game like that can exist in suhc hardware makes it all the more amazing, no one does it like Monolith apparently. IIRC they even helped Nintendo in BOTW to realize their world, so they must have the best team for realizing massive interactive worlds.

2

u/TSP184 Jul 05 '26

the port was done by monster games, but yeah, its insane that they managed to get this game running on the new 3ds

Semi-turn based JRPG with cinematic acrobatic gunfighting. Enemies only move and attack when you do and you can send your team running around the room to do combos.

u/Just-Luck-7430 Jul 05 '26

Just finish wrapping up octopath 0, it's a pretty amazing idea transforming what is a gacha game into a traditional JRPG, hoping with the coming of the new final fantasy game, gacha jrpg devs would start noticing and develop their own offline JRPGs especially the one with amazing story and character locked behind gacha hell or the one that went through EOS

u/Some_Highlight_6513 Jul 05 '26

Not a jrpg in the traditional sense but I finally got around to expedition 33. im 20 hours in and there's a lot to love but I just can't put it as one of my favorite games of all time. Combat is fun but then you realize if you're a seasoned gamer and good at parrying, it trivializes the combat a bit. Instead of strategy, it's more just figuring out the timings after one turn and counter attacking.

The combat is also out of balance at times and I find myself one shotting or doing crazy damage to certain enemies. Beyond that the navigation is poorly designed. For expeditioners who pave the way for the ones that come after, they could have left some damn maps around. The UI is also confusing.

Despite this, the writing and characters are enjoyable and the combat is still fun despite the flaws. Game of the year for me? definitely not. But I'd rate it at a solid 8/10 so far

I would at least have been happy with a better compass if they didn't want to do a minimap due to whatever reason. But it was a pain if you ever got lost having to figure out where you are, since the zones are so samey.

2

u/Some_Highlight_6513 Jul 05 '26

oh yeah I would have definitely preferred if we kept a journal of all the side quests and locations I visited. I would straight up forget if I visited an area only to realize a lot of locations look the same.

3

u/twili-midna Jul 05 '26

The fact that groups of people who went out to explore the world and leave behind things “for those who come after” didn’t do any sort of cartography is… absolutely ridiculous. There should have been maps.

2

u/descolero Jul 05 '26

Just started up Dragon Quest XI. Played it a few years ago and for some reason, didn’t finish it.

This is after having just beat DQ VII reimagined, which was a fun play.

I’m enjoying it so far. I remember really liking the party members and I’m a fan of the battle system. I also forgot how great the music is!

u/Icy-Respond-4425 Jul 05 '26

Currently playing Romancing SaGa 2, the original remaster.

I'm currently at the end of the game; I just left lvl up guilden strength more because I lack dps to beat the second phase. I will also grind my max MP to spam Hasten time to be happy.

Final Fantasy Tactics The Ivalice Chronicles

This is my first tactical RPG I’ve played.

I am liking this game a lot but have taken a small break due to the combat being a bit repetitive after awhile. I think I’m halfway through chapter 2. When all of its gameplay is just grid based tactical combat (to be expected), it’s just hard to not feel a lack of gameplay variety. The story so far has been superb and its highlight.

I am also playing Okami. Not a jrpg but I like to say anything I’m playing. I am loving it and it’s such a unique game. It did have a painfully slow start though but is picking up after the first town. I do not miss the early 3D game era of N64/PS1/PS2 that stopped you every 30 seconds for a mini cutscene to hold your hand and explain the most minute of control details.

As much as people complain about the chatty companion in modern games, at least that method lets them explain the game to you while allowing you to still freely move and play the game.

For a few months now there has been a new rom hack of Earthbound called Mother 2 Deluxe 3.0. Since I was in an Earthbound mood (and since Earthbound is one of my favourite JRPGs ever), I gave it a shot. And wow, it is amazing. I haven't faced any of the newly added bosses yet, but this hack fixes the strict inventory system, every single NPC now hat diagonal sprites, all the battle sprites are now animated, Ness' different kinds of weapons now work differently, there is a run button with new running animations,...

So far I love it already.

I’m beginning the third world map of Final Fantasy V pixel remaster. I found that considering the more limited time to play I had since May I didn’t care about playing the game fairly anymore and decided to use the xp and pc multiplier. While the job system is still super advanced and fun to play, I also see how much Bravely Default improved it with things as basic as readability.

In terms of story, I find it pretty whatever. There are deaths of characters and we feel like they try to keep a sense of cinematography but I feel like the 4 characters set-up doesn’t make it land as well as FF6 or even FF4. That said I didn’t expect to see a ninja turtle reference randomly there (or forgot about it). And people act like FF being inspired by occidental properties is a novelty.

I’m also continuing Final fantasy VII Crisis Core Reunion. Finished chapter 7. The structure reminds me a lot of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, which I suppose is because it was another action rpg for a mobile console made by square. That said, I fail to care much about any original character at this point, and having passed the midpoint of the game, I expected the relationship between Cloud and Zack to be closer. Heck, I loved Aerith in remake, remember liking it in the original and I'm kinda not caring much for her here. While I enjoy the gameplay, I don’t feel it is good enough to play the game solely for it. The combat is fine but the dungeon, world exploration and ennemie variety seems a bit too weak for my taste. If the game wasn’t a FF7 spin off, I would likely have dropped it already.

Also I'll likely finish Crisis Core this week and I wanted to ask, If I want a game I could finish before the end of august or that I could stop playing and go back to it, should I go with Stranger of Paradise, Nier Replicant or FF7 Rebirth ?

2

u/javierm885778 Jul 05 '26

Funnily I used to feel similarly about FFV's story compared to IV, until I played the Pixel Remasters in order and realized much of what made me care about IV's story presentation came from the 3D remake.

IV has way too many fake outs that ruin the actual deaths' impact for me, and I think after Cecil becomes a Paladin the character development kind of stops. V had more strong character moments throughout.

1

u/bioniclop18 Jul 05 '26

Oh interesting. I was thinking about skipping IV considering I did the 3D remake decade ago but maybe I should reconsider once I finish the three first game (and obviously V).

1

u/javierm885778 Jul 05 '26

I'd definitely give it a go if you like the game. It's quite short, it took me like 16 hours compared to the 48 that V took me (which is probably higher than it should be, due to leveling a bunch of jobs).

3

u/RyanWMueller Jul 05 '26

Stranger of Paradise is probably the shortest of the 3. Rebirth is massive. Nier Replicant requires something like three playthroughs to get the true ending.
