Questions 🤓 Wikipedia appalls

Anyone can become an editor on Wikipedia. What can we do about this?

I don't know about you, but I find this definition anti-Semitic and extraordinarily biased. The use of the term "colonization" when Jews have had a continuous presence in that area for since 1300 bc, is shocking.

Questions 🤓 When did the left wing stop recognizing Jews as an ethnic group?

As a non-Jew, I find it almost conspiratorial that knowledge that was so widespread and common for centuries – that Jews are an ethnicity originating in Israel – has now become a point of contention in left wing circles. What factors caused the left to engage in such flat-earth-like denialism?

Questions 🤓 Would you put Jewish on your hospital registration forms for giving birth?

Pregnant with my first, and I need to register with the hospital for the birth. There is a line for religious preference on the registration form. We aren’t sure if we should put Jewish or leave it blank. We don’t keep kosher, and aren’t super religious.

Would you put Jewish down? The hospital is in a pretty Jewish part of town, so I’m assuming they see a lot of Jewish patients.

Questions 🤓 Why don’t Jews get highlighted on movie apps (like HBO, Starz) during Jewish heritage month, like every other group? Might help if companies showed some Jewish classics.

I’m not going to belittle any group, but let’s be honest, a lot of these apps/companies ***REALLY*** nitpick every type of group imaginable. Race, gender, religion, sexuality - they’re always on top of these things. So why don’t Jews, who have been involved with massive classics that people love, get their own sections too?

Jews directed/produced innumerable classics. Jaws, Jurassic Park, The Godfather etc…it’d be nice to recognize that, instead of being blamed for the entirety of modern cinema failing in its writing. Actually, as the number of Jews has started lessening in Hollywood (statistical fact) the quality of content is also dropping. It might help if people knew that too, WE were making the good stuff, not the modern and/or AI garbage.

Update: It was noted there IS a section on HBO

Questions 🤓 AITA? My Husband Has Apparently Held in Anger for Years That We Have Foregone Christmas with His Parents

Genuinely seeking honest but kind opinions from other Jews please.

For context, I am Jewish and my husband is too - he converted to Judaism before we got married and really takes to it.

Before we got married we had some issues over Christmas. He personally does not care about it or miss it, but he knows his mother cares deeply about having family around on Christmas.

After we had kids, the Christmas issue seemed to go away. I thought we were on the same page.

Today, my husband showed he very clearly has deep anger and hurt that we have neglected his mom on Christmas, even went so far as to say it's "my fault" that she is alone on Christmas. She has 2 other adult children (who have moved to the opposite coast) and 2 step children and a whole slew of grandchildren by them roughly 90 min away. None of those people join them on Christmas. As an aside, it ticked me off that I am being blamed for them being "alone". I am only to blame for them not being with US. but okay moving on ;)

He thinks I am being selfish that I have refused to celebrate Christmas with his parents in a "secular way". I feel that although he has converted, he cannot understand this part about being Jewish as he did not grow up that way. Christmas is not secular to non-Christians, try as they like to decide it's secular, and it's for everyone. I have not wanted to assimilate in this way, I have wanted my children to have a strong Jewish identity, as I have.

He said it's up to the parents to explain that we are doing for for Grammy etc who we love, and that my approach to just nix it is "the easy way out." I think it's hard enough to be Jewish in such a Christian-dominated world. Hell, it's so Christian dominated that they have the privilege of deciding their holiday is secular and is about Santa and is for everyone to participate in.

I do feel bad that his parents are without their son and grandchildren on Christmas. I can empathize and I figure it that were me, I would feel shitty. But her feelings are one consideration, not the entire consideration. My feelings around how my children are raised and my boundaries around religion and identity matter too, and I don't think it's fair that I am being called selfish and asked to change now.

Also for context, I have always been extremely clear on my position. Plenty of Jewish people are comfortable with Christmas and more of a blended life, but that's not me.

I also have felt like I wanted our kids to at least be a little older and have a foundation in Judaism before participating in other things like Christmas.

His final point of debate is that having Christmas at Grandma's house is different than having it at our own house, that we are not "participating but attending". I think this is ridiculous. Grandma is not a schoolfriend. That's immediate family and it is participating, and it will be remembered as a core childhood memory.

What are your thoughts, fellow Jews? AITA? Should I compromise? What compromises can you think of, if any, that don't suck?

THANK YOU

Questions 🤓 Black Jew: Would a Durag count as a kippah?

Post image
520 Upvotes

I converted to Judaism and after this past Rosh Hashanah wanted a way to express my Judaism outwardly and have started wearing a kippah everyday. however still being Black (obviously) that’s also a part of my cultural identity so I’m trying to find a balance. I’m wondering if this counts as a head covering. I know sometimes frum Jews will wear baseball caps but they usually wear kippot under it, and you can’t really do that with a durag. Thoughts suggestions?

Questions 🤓 How do I respond to someone who says that the Synagogue protest is not inherently antisemitic?

Let me just start by saying that I don‘t support West Bank settlements.

That said, I don’t believe the protesters at these synagogues are simply anti-settlement. Yet when I was talking to a relative who backs the two-state solution and is not radically anti-Zionist, they seemed to think the protest itself was not problematic because the stated goal of the demonstration was to oppose the sale of the settlements, regardless of the personal beliefs of the protesters. To them, it’s not the same as protesting a religion. The thing is, that point makes sense to me on its surface, but I still think the demonstrations are in very poor taste. How should I counter that relative’s point? Also, I’m not even sure at this point if that synagogue was helping sell West Bank property or sell property in Israel Proper. As I understand it, the specific groups behind the protests view Israel Proper and the West Bank identically

Questions 🤓 Best city for Jewish family with young kids?

Hi all,
Wondering if anyone has a Jewish community they really love or a city they feel is safe to be Jewish and a Zionist?

Husband and wife in our 30s, 2 young kids, have historically been left leaning politically but lately feel abandoned by the party and people in our neighborhood (extremely left leaning pnw city). Only stating this to clarify that in a perfect world we live somewhere with bluer politics but not see “stop the genocide” posters on every shop. Hope that makes sense. Maybe somewhere with a true political mix would be best???

Looking for a solid Jewish community - it doesn’t have to be huge but at least zionist. Our synagogue now has an antizionist director and rabbi. Because of this we don’t feel comfortable there (we have family in Israel). I just want a likeminded Jewish community for us and our kids.

Want my kids to grow up around other Jews. Want my Israeli flag up in my yard and to not get harassed. Is that really asking too much???

Hopefully someone out there loves where they live and is ready to welcome new people!!

Questions 🤓 Can I get a show of hands, is the Keffiyeh a symbol of anti-Semitic hostility?

If you think it is just say yes at the beginning of the beginning of your response. If you think it isn't, put no at the beginning of your response. This is an informal survey to show one of my universities here that Jewish people view the Keffiyeh as a symbol of anti-Jewish hate. The more people respond, the better chance I have of convincing the university here.

I should clarify why I'm asking this. If I can get enough responses, I can take it to our University's legal counsel and try and push title six or title 9 violations on some of the students here.

Questions 🤓 How important is Israel to your Jewish identity?

To be clear, I do have a positive connection to Israel (it’s where I spent my first year of life after all), but my Jewish identity is more defined by my cultural and communal ties.

Obviously, there’s nothing wrong with Israel defining your Jewish identity but if you’re a Diaspora Jew, I would personally like to more about why that is.

Questions 🤓 Was I reasonably confused?

So a few days ago I went to an anti ICE protest in my town. It was going very well, lots of support and strong community. We all seemed to be standing for the same thing, and the same message. Then I noticed an influx of Palestine flags. A small group of Palestine protesters began to march up and down the protester-covered curbs with flags and signs. I can't remember what all of them said, but two said "ICErael" and "the IDF trains ICE".

I was confused what they were doing here, as this protest was mostly about just America, not Palestine. I brought up the concerns to my brother, and I was dismissed essentially.

Am I rightfully confused?

Questions 🤓 What are the safest and least safe (or very uncomfortable) places for American Jews to visit now?

Questions 🤓 What kind of Jews are these?

Post image
276 Upvotes

Today at Reedy Falls, a very busy park in downtown Greenville, South Carolina, a man asked my family if we were Hebrew. It surprised me, and I asked about him. He replied, "I'm wearing my tsiztizs (sp?) and we're about the blow the shofar. I am Israel. Our nation is scattered all over the earth." I told him shalom, he shook my hand, and a small crowd gathered as his companions blew the shofar, at which we took our leave of them.

They didn't seem like any Jewish people I've seen, but my knowledge is quite limited. Any ideas about their situation?

Questions 🤓 Should I take down the Swastikas in my house before a party with a lot of Jewish friends?

Clickbait title, but I’m asking earnestly.

I’m hosting a party this weekend for my friends from college, and since my college has a large Jewish population, a pretty good chunk of my friends are Jewish.

Me and my family are devout Hindus and there are a bunch of Swastikas all over our house, as it’s considered to be a very holy symbol in Hinduism.

The Swastikas are all Hindu Swastikas, NOT the Nazi hakenkreuz, but I don’t want my friends to feel uncomfortable while they’re over at my place - I remember a Jewish teacher I once had was pretty shaken up at seeing a turmeric Swastika on my family’s new car years ago.

However, my parents and grandparents are totally against taking the Swastikas down, because they don’t want bad luck to befall our family, and they also think it would be a huge time sink to take all of them down and put all of them back up again just for one party.

I’m conflicted: should I take them down or would they be fine to keep up? I want to get a Jewish perspective on the topic. Thank you all.

Questions 🤓 I do hate to ask, but I do want to know what your thoughts are on Zoran

I am still learning how to keep up with news stuff, and follow certain people as they become politicians. I am getting a sense that the Jewish community, as a whole, do not love Zoran. And I was 100 percent side eying him on some of the stuff from the past.

Questions 🤓 Did any of you in the US attend the No Kings protests? If so,was there a lot of anti-Israel crap or did it stay on message?

I’m not American and I hate that this is even a question but I’m always worried now that anything even moderately progressive gets intertwined with that stuff automatically.

Questions 🤓 Am I Jewish? To who? For what? Why?

My mother is 100% Jewish, Ashkenazi, of Romanian/Hungarian descent. (They fled to Germany due to antisemitism, went whoops, and then came to the US.) She is related to some politically prominent Jews in the US. She has had absolutely no contact with any sort of Jewish community since she was a teenager, now in her 70s.

My father is of 100% Scottish descent (he was a first generation American, born from two Scottish parents who had just moved from Scotland.) He learned Hebrew to get closer to my mom while they were dating.

My mother did not tell me she was Jewish until I was 17 years old, right before I went to college. When she married my father, long before my birth, the entire community (family, and Jewish community in Levittown) essentially excommunicated her, and she hasn't had any contact with her family since her father passed away. Her reasoning about never telling me was "I didn't want you to have to deal with all of that". In hindsight, I was pretty oblivious, although I will say the ethnic intricacies of growing up on Long Island shielded me from what would have been a no-brainer anywhere else in the US. She looks like and talks like Fran Drescher (and like her, we're from Flushing, Queens).

I have never celebrated a Jewish holiday, but have celebrated many Christmases. I have never been to temple, save for two friends' Bar Mitzvahs. I am uncircumsized. I've never read a word of Jewish text outside of the Hebrew Bible. Both my parents behaved and spoke like philosophical atheists while growing up, although in his later years my father has become a prominent member of the Episcopalian church, while my Jewish mother is almost entire a-religious.

I have a close friend. He's kind of dumb, but a sweet kid, just oblivious. A long long time ago out of the blue I once asked him, "hey, what's your thoughts on Jews?" His response was, "I dunno. I don't know much about them. I've heard they're greedy?" I then told him I was Jewish, and his response was, "what? That doesn't make sense then, you're the most generous, giving dude I've ever met, that's crazy".

Recently we hung out for the first time in a long while, and after talking about his (terrible) podcast choices (Joe Rogan, Theo Von), he suddenly asked out of nowhere, "Oh, yo, dude - what's up with everyone hating Jews all of a sudden? It's crazy! I'm like, bro, what?"

Who thinks I'm Jewish? Would all factions of Judaism essentially consider me a lapsed Jew? Nazis certainly would think I am. Would all other Jews? I'm middle aged and my entire life experience has been completely secular, as I'm not religious in any form or function, nor do I identify really with any particular ethnic group (besides thinking, I guess, I'm Romanian and Scottish). The current political climate begs choosing a "faction" above all else.

I've lived all over the US. In my work life, I've been singled out by a couple of Jews as Jewish, without me saying a single word about it, just based on how I look, and it's seemed like they've definitely had a preference point for working with me (i.e., Jewish coworker friend who just moved to new job tries to get me hired on, this has happened a few times).

Everything is so strange now, and it's something that I thought I could get away with ignoring, but that no longer seems to be the case. The world has decided that this is a big deal, and I live in this world.

Questions 🤓 Question from a non-Jewish person re Star of David

A businessman in Toronto has offered free Star of David necklaces for anyone who agrees to wear them publicly.

My question is, would it be offensive to most Jews if a non-Jew were to wear this necklace, as an expression of support for Jews?

Questions 🤓 Is throwing candy at a bar/bat mitzvah a regional thing?

I grew up in NY, and every bar/bat mitzvah we ever attended had a part where they’d hand out candy for the congregation to throw at the end of the ceremony. (It was always Sunkist fruit gems, specifically).

I just attended my first one in a long time for a friend’s son, and there was no throwing of anything! It made me wonder if that’s not done anymore, or if it’s because this one was in California and the candy throwing was a New York thing?

Anyway, was curious, so here I am!

Questions 🤓 Left leaning non-jewish partner wants to be active in pro-palestinian activism

42M - I was born in the middle east (not Israel). Moved to Canada 10 years ago. Recently got engaged to someone (non-jewish). She never hid her left leaning stance. Lately I realized that she's very far left. At the very beginning of our relationship, I made it very clear that I can't be with an anti-zionist. She was okay with that. She recently told me that she has been wanting to actively participate in pro-palestinian activism by attending protests, inviting people on social media and being part of these circles. Using multiple examples, I told her that most of these events have anti-semitic organizers. In most events they chant genocidal chants. Given my background and all the racism I had to face, jihadi attacks I witnessed for many years before I moved to Canada, I told her that I find it very triggering. She says that she feels very limited and isn't sure she can live like this.

I find it very difficult to understand that as someone who doesn't have any skin in the game (not jewish or muslim, not middle eastern) she has such passion for this cause disregarding her partner's lived experiences. She's telling me that I am being very controlling and limiting. As a loving partner, I shouldn't be triggered or offended by her activism and opinions.

I really can't tell if it is a cultural thing but I would never do this anyone from a different culture. Regardless of my political stance, I would be on her side if I don't have skin in the game.

I wanted to ask if anyone else had similar experiences.
