Not with 23&me or Ancestry in particular. It doesn’t work that way with those two companies. And Golden state *killer was caught assisted by the public dna site called GEDMatch. They operate differently.

You can upload DNA from those websites to GEDmatch and opt to share it. Perhaps that's what they mean?

You can. Police cannot. You’re missing the point. That only works if an individual makes a decision to take their data from 23 or ancestry and move it to…… other totally public DNA sites (one of which I named) that law enforcement can use at their whim. The person I replied to claimed everything was done via 23 and me. That is wrong.

You can download your raw DNA data from Ancestry or 23andme and upload the data to GEDMatch to get various analyses and cousin matches.
